TRINITY LUTHERAN CHURCH Stevens Point, Wisconsin Ministers: Every Baptized Member BAPTISM OF OUR LORD Today s liturgy uses ELW setting 4, alt. *Greeting P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. *Kyrie January 7, 2018 8:15 & 10:45 a.m. Prelude: Spirit of God, Now That the Daylight, Lord of All Hopefulness Announcements Dale Wood *Brief Order for Confession and Forgiveness P: In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. P: God of all mercy and consolation, come to the help of your people, turning us from our sin to live for you alone. Give us the power of your Holy Spirit that we may confess our sin, receive your forgiveness, and grow into the fullness of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. P: Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another. Silence for prayer and reflection. Most merciful God, C: we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen. P: God, who is rich in mercy, loved us even when we were dead in sin, and made us alive together with Christ. By grace you have been saved. In the name of + Jesus Christ, your sins are forgiven. Almighty God strengthen you with power through the Holy Spirit, that Christ may live in your hearts through faith. *Gathering Hymn: Let Us Go Now to the Banquet ELW #523-1- -2-

*Hymn of Praise: *Prayer of the Day: P: The Lord be with you. P: Let us pray. Holy God, creator of light and giver of goodness, your voice moves over the waters. Immerse us in your grace, and transform us by your Spirit, that we may follow after your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. Children s Lesson First Reading: Genesis 1:1 5 1 In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, 2 the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. 3 Then God said, Let there be light ; and there was light. 4 And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day. Second Reading: Acts 19:1 7 1 While Apollos was in Corinth, Paul passed through the interior regions and came to Ephesus, where he found some disciples. 2 He said to them, Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you became believers? They replied, No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit. 3 Then he said, Into what then were you baptized? They answered, Into John s baptism. 4 Paul said, John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, in Jesus. 5 On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 When Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied 7 altogether there were about twelve of them. -3- -4-

*Gospel Acclamation *Gospel: Mark 1:4 11 P: The Holy Gospel according to Mark, the 1 st chapter. C: Glory to you, O Lord. 4 John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 5 And people from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. 6 Now John was clothed with camel s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. 7 He proclaimed, The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. 9 In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. 11 And a voice came from heaven, You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased. P: The Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to you, O Christ. Sermon: Pastor Clay Schmit Hymn of the Day: Baptized in Water ELW #456 *The Apostles Creed: C: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. *Prayers of the Church: A:...Let us pray. C: Have mercy, O God. P:...Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. *Sharing of the Peace P: May the peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you always. May these gifts be signs of our whole lives returned to you, dedicated to the healing and unity of all creation, through Jesus Christ. Amen. -5- -6-

*The Great Thanksgiving P: The Lord be with you. P: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them to the Lord. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God. C: It is right to give our thanks and praise. K E Y INSPIRING WORSHIP ALL WEEK Philip found Nathanael and said to him, We have found him about whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus son of Joseph from Nazareth. In this week s Gospel from Mark, it was Nathanael, who needed to let go of his prior thoughts about all people from Nazareth in order to meet Jesus. It was at the urging and insistence of his friend, Philip, that this encounter was even possible. In our lives today, how have we, too, at times had our perspectives changed by a friend who offered a different one? Are there ways we also could better share God s message with those reluctant to hear? Amazing God, You give us new opportunities every year, every day. Help us to recognize that the lives of each of your children is special, and by opening ourselves to new ways of thinking, we can learn something from their stories. Help us to more fully recognize that your presence and love can be found in what we might consider the unlikeliest of people and places. Continue to guide us in our lives of faith throughout this new year. Amen. Devotions written by Trinity members.
