Holy Spirit Retreat Center Spring 2018 CENTER UPDATE The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. John 1:5

A Letter From the Executive Director Dear Friends of Holy Spirit Retreat Center, The theme for this Center Update speaks of light shining in the darkness, and it is most appropriate to these times! As I sit here writing this letter, I m looking out at a dark and cloudy day, but along with the darkness comes the promise of rain and cooler temperatures. This gets me thinking that there is always hope and goodness hidden amidst the darkness. The mystics tell us that we need darkness as well as light, and without the darkness, we wouldn t see or appreciate the light. When you re in the midst of darkness, these thoughts can be hard to swallow, but there is truth in them. Difficult times call forth creativity and courage; the best of human nature as well as the worst that humans are capable of. The choice is ours: How will we respond? We are offering some workshops, retreats and other programs that can help to bring out our inner giftedness and help us to keep our balance when the going gets rough. I invite you to take a look and treat yourself to some nurturing, or maybe just a little time apart from the craziness that will enable you to dive back into the fray with a calmer heart and mind. As you examine our programs, please note that we have increased our rates for single-day events and eight-day retreats. The extra income will enable us to better meet our expenses. We thank you for your understanding! Come enlighten yourself, and help us to bring some light into this New Year. In the Light of the Spirit, Chris Machado, SSS Mission Statement Holy Spirit Retreat Center, as a chartered ministry of the Sisters of Social Service, is rooted in Scripture and the spirit of St. Benedict. We strive to create an atmosphere of prayer and hospitality where community is nourished, each person can thrive and an interfaith environment is established. Featured on the Cover The cover photo of the candle shining in the darkness reminds us that The Light shines in the darkness and the darkness cannot overcome it. (John 1:5) Holy Spirit Retreat Center offers the space and a place where light shines and hope revives in the face of a world where darkness seems to be spreading. You are invited to come and sit in prayer and meditation and find comfort and solace in times of darkness. 2 Center Update Produced by DDCC, Inc. www.ddcc.bz (818) 772-9555

EXTENDED ONE-DAY RETREATS WOMEN AT THE WELL SUMMER RETREAT Re-Exploring Native American Spirituality Presenters: Sr. Chris Machado and the Women at the Well Team Friday, July 27, 2018 7:00 pm Sunday, July 29, 2018 1:00 pm Our retreat last summer was such a huge hit, and so many women wanted to re-visit the theme of Native American Spirituality, that the team decided to do a follow-up retreat. This time we will delve even more deeply into the rich deposit of spirituality that we have inherited from the First Americans. The Holy Spirit Retreat Center sits on land that once belonged to the Chumash and Tongva people, and last year, we invited a woman whose family once owned part of Encino to come and share her history and culture with us. It was so enriching that we hope to have another speaker this year as well as some different prayer experiences to share. Come continue the exploration of Native American spirituality. If you weren t with us last summer, no problem! Come enjoy the prayer, drumming, Medicine Wheel work and Native American lore with us. The weekend will also include the usual Tai Chi, centering prayer, reflection time, sharing and, of course, fun. We ll have another Native American art dabble as well. Come join us as we honor our First Americans. Fee: $275.00 per person single occupancy; $225.00 per person shared occupancy; or $150.00 per person commuter To register: Please call (818) 285-3354 by the July 10 th deadline. (Mark 6:30-32) A Directed Retreat is a time to set aside the normal occupations and preoccupations of daily life. Time is spent each day in prayer and reflection. Retreat is not a withdrawal from life, but an opening to it; it is about being present to one s experience and to the Presence of the Divine in every aspect of life and to be touched by Sacred Mystery and to come away with a deeper awareness of God in our lives. Daily, there is time with your spiritual director. Retreat is time to learn more about you in relationship to God and to others, and respond to the movement of the Spirit. In this setting, silence is an attitude of making space for God. Silence invites you to give your attention to all the ways that God can speak to you. Prerequisite: Previous experience of a silent retreat Contact: Pat Nelson, CSJ, at (818) 815-4480. Fee: $600.00 all rooms private (massage therapy will be available) To register place call by the July 6 th deadline. Early Registration is recommended as space is limited.
