The Rock The Rock is a Youth Ministry of Ascension Lutheran Church Family Feud based on Luke 14:25-33 Announcer: Reader: Jerry Johnson: Jeanie Johnson: Josie Johnson: Jenny Johnson: John Johnson: Julie Johnson: Junior Johnson: Jenna Johnson: Reader: Eric Matthew Allee Alleah Lauren Austin Alissa Michael Kelli Large crowds were traveling with Jesus, and turning to them he said: "If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters - -yes, even his own life --he cannot be my disciple. And anyone who does not carry his cross and follow me cannot be my disciple. "Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Will he not first sit down and estimate the cost to see if he has enough money to complete it? For if he lays the foundation and is not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule him, saying, `This fellow began to build and was not able to finish.' "Or suppose a king is about to go to war against another king. Will he not first sit down and consider whether he is able with Page 1 2004 David Skarshaug (www.alcames.org). ten thousand men to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand? If he is not able, he will send a delegation while the other is still a long way off and will ask for terms of peace. In the same way, any of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be my disciple. Luke 14:25-33 John: (Music in background.) Welcome to this morning s edition of Family Feud, the game show that pits one family against another in a competition for valuable prizes for your viewing pleasure and our sponsor s advertising dollars. Now, let me introduce the returning champions: the John Johnson family from Lake Wobegon, Minnesota (applause). And our challengers, the Jerry Johnson family from Frostbite Falls, Minnesota (applause). John, Jerry, come on up. (Men come to podium.) Are you ready? Our first category is People Jesus told us to hate in Luke, Chapter 14. (both men slap buzzer). John Johnson? Satan. I m sorry. Jerry? (Looking worried and confused.) Jesus told us to hate? Oh brother Bible says (Ding Sound)! That s right Jerry! Do you want to pass or play? (family screams Pass, Pass ) A a.i we ll play. (Each man returns to his family.) Well, Jerry Johnson from Frostbite Falls. I hear you are a collector of sorts? What is it you collect, Jerry? Sinkers Page 2

Jeanie: Jeanie: Josie: Josie: Sinkers? Yeah, you know fishing sinkers. That has a sort of limited appeal, doesn t it? Well, you know they come in all kinds of sizes and styles. Well, introduce me to the rest of your fascinating family, Jerry. This is my wife, Jeanie, and our lovely daughters Josie and Jenny. So, tell me Jeanie, what was it that attracted you to Jerry? Oh, that s easy. His collection of sinkers. I see. I ve never been to Frostbite Falls, but I m getting a pretty good picture of it. Okay, Jeanie, again, here is the category: People Jesus told us to hate in Luke Chapter 15? Can I use my mother for a lifeline? Bible says...(ding sound). That s right, Mother is correct. That brings us to you, Josie. Tell me, Josie, do you have a sinker collection too? Don t be silly I collect bobbers. I see well the fruit doesn t fall far from the tree, does it? Well, tell me Josie, What people did Jesus tell us to hate in Luke chapter 15? Well, can I ask my sister (looks at Jennie) Bible says (ding sound). That s right! Sister is a correct answer. Well, that brings us to the last member in the Frostbite falls tackle box. Page 3

Jennie, let me guess, you must collect fishhooks, right? Jennie: Jennie: Jeanie: Josie: John: Hmm fishhooks? Sounds interesting unique and cutting edge, dangerous and daring, yet with broad appeal. You really think I could capture a ribbon at the county fair with a collection like that? Ah yeah. Okay, you know the question Jennie. What people did Jesus tell us to hate in Luke chapter 15? Well, I d like to check with my father Bible says (ding sound). That s right. Father is correct. And speaking of fathers, that brings us back to you, Jerry. Oh dear Bible says (buzz sound). Oh, I m sorry, Jerry, no deer. Oh, I meant moose. Sorry, Jerry. Strike one for the Jerry Johnson family. Jeanie? Oh my stars Bible says (buzz sound). Nope, no stars. Strike two on your family, Jeanie. Josie? (Long pause.) I d like to buy a vowel. (Buzz sound.) Back to the John Johnson family for a steal. (John Johnson family shouts out ideas to John.) John, do you have an answer? I ll have to go with my wife... Bible says (ding sound). That s right! Wife is a correct answer. New topic. Jeanie and Page 4

Julie, come on over. (Jeanie and Julie come to podium.) The topic is In a word or phrase, what did Jesus mean by his advice to hate your father and mother, your wife and children, your brothers and sisters, and even your own life? (Julie buzzes in.) Julie Johnson? Priority. The stress here is on the priority of one s love. Our priority should be to love Jesus above all else. In Matthew 10:37 Jesus said "Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. Priority. Bible says (ding sound). That s right. Play or pass? We ll play, Richard. Very well, so, tell me about yourself, Julie. I always thought Lake Wobegon was a mythical town. From a heavenly viewpoint, aren t all our hometowns temporary, almost mythical places? Hmm, pretty deep thought. I ll have to get back to you on that. Introduce me to the rest of your family. Well, you ve met my husband, John Johnson. Yeah, let me guess. He comes from Wisconsin. Right, he worked in a lumber mill there. Hmm his story has a familiar ring to it. And you have two children? Yes, our son, Junior, and our daughter Jenna. We ll start with you, Junior. Page 5

Junior: Junior: Junior: Hi Richard. You re not going to kiss me are you? Not a chance. So, Junior, is your name Junior, John, or John Junior? I m John Junior Johnson, Jr., son of John Johnson, Senior. Junior is my middle name, but they call me Junior to set me apart from John Johnson, Sr. Well I m confused. So, Give me a word or a phrase explaining what Jesus meant when he said we should hate our families in Luke chapter 25. Well, hating your family would have been a violation of God s Law, and Jesus came to fulfill the law, so he couldn t have meant that. I d go with the word Loyalty. Our loyalty to Jesus must be tops. Bible says (ding sound.) That s right, Junior. Loyalty is a correct answer. That brings us to you, Jenna. Jenna: That s easy: Carry the Cross. In Luke 25:27, Jesus told the same people they need to carry their cross and follow him. You see, when a criminal sentenced to death in the Roman Empire was ordered to carry his cross through the city on the way to crucifixion, it was a way of admitting the punishment was just and right. We too must rightly crucify our old lives and follow Christ. The answer is Carry the Cross. The Bible says (ding sound). That s correct. That brings us to back to you, John Senior. And there s just the one answer left. Get it, and your family wins. Page 6

John Johnson: Hmm I ve got it! Count the Cost. You see, Jesus followed his advice with two examples: one involving building a tower and another about waging a war. In both cases, Jesus reminds us that there is a cost to following him, and sometimes that cost will seem extreme, so we better know what we re getting into when we start to follow Him. The answer is Count the Cost. The Bible says (ding sound). That s correct, and it looks like the John Johnson family remains our champions for today. Come back tomorrow when they will battle another family from the great white north in tomorrow s edition of Family Feud. Page 7
