For the past thirty-five years, St. Paul s Episcopal Church has become a hospitable place where the human spirit speaks through the arts. St. Paul s Music, a self-supporting 501(c)(3) not for profit organization, has a three-fold purpose. First, the organization supports mission projects such as recordings and tours. Second, St. Paul s Music supports the Choral Scholar Program of St. Paul s Choir School that underwrites private music lessons to deserving youth. Third, the organization continues to feature choral masterworks performed by St. Paul s Choir with orchestra, as well as professional artists from the Indianapolis area and around the world. St. Paul s Music is an organization dedicated to sharing the arts with all people in our community. St. Paul s Music presents Choral Masterworks of Maurice Duruflé (1902-1986) St. Paul s Choir with the Orchestra Indianapolis March 16, Sunday at 4:00 p.m. The Requiem Mass evolved from the prayers of the ancient Jews requesting eternal rest for the immortal souls of the righteous. As early Christians borrowed liturgy from the Jewish service, sources from the 2nd century refer to the incorporation of the Eucharist at the Requiem. The liturgy of the Requiem Mass follows the same order as the Common Mass with a few exceptions. As our earthly journey concludes, the liturgy of the Requiem Mass is our entrance into the journey of eternal life. Tonight, we have inserted a gradual psalm setting, of the Duruflé motets, and his setting of the Pater noster (Lord s Prayer) within the performance of this piece, as they could be done within an actual liturgy. REQUIEM Opus 9 for choir and orchestra Introit and Kyrie Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine: et lux perpetua luceat eis. Te decet hymnus, Deus, in Sion, et tibi reddetur votum in Jerusalem. Exaudi orationem meam: ad te omnis caro veniet. Kyrie eleison. Christe eleison. Kyrie eleison. Give them eternal rest, Lord: and let perpetual light shine upon them. A hymn befits you, God, in Zion, and a vow shall be paid to you in Jerusalem. Hear my prayer: to you all flesh shall come. Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy Gradual Psalm 42 As panting deer desire the water brook The people stand, as they are able, and sing the psalm setting found on page four. Lord Jesus Christ, king of glory, deliver the souls of all the faithful departed from the punishments of hell and from the deep lake. Deliver them from the mouth of the lion, lest Tartarus (hell) swallow them up, lest they fall into darkness: but let the standard-bearer Saint Michael bring them back into the holy light which you once promised to Abraham and his seed. We offer prayers and sacrifices to you, Lord: you receive them on behalf of those souls whose memory we recall today; grant them, Lord, to pass from death to the life which you once promised to Abraham and his seed.
Congregavit nos in unum Christi amor Exultemus et in ipso jucundemur. Timeamus et amemus Deum vivum. Et ex corde diligamus nos sincero. Amen. Tota pulchra es, Maria, Tota pulchra es, Maria, Et macula originalis non est in te. Vestimentum tuum candidum quasi nix, et facies tua sicut sol. Tu gloria Jerusalem, tu laetitia Israel, tu honorificentia populi nostri. Tu es Petrus Tu es Petrus et super hanc petram aedificabo ecclesiam meam. Tantum ergo Tantum ergo sacramentum veneremur cernui: Et antiquum documentum novu cedat ritui. Praestet fides supplementum sensuum defectui. Amen. Where charity and love are, there is God. The love of Christ has brought us together into one. Let us rejoice and let us be glad in that love itself. Let us fear and love the living God. And let us love from a pure heart. Amen. You are all beauty, Mary, and there is no blemish of original sin in you. Your garments are as white as snow. And your face is as the sun. You are the glory of Jerusalem, the joy of Israel, the source of honour to our people. Thou art Peter; and upon this rock I will build my church Let us venerate this great sacrament with bowed heads; let the ancient example give way to a new rite. Let faith make good the insufficiency of our senses. Praise and rejoicing, safety and honour, virtue and blessing to the begetter and the begotten. To him who comes from either be there equal praise. Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread, and forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, Give them eternal rest May everlasting light shine on them, Lord, with your saints for ever, for you are good. Give them eternal rest, Lord, and may perpetual light shine on them, for you are good. Lord, deliver me from eternal death, on that terrible day: when the heavens and earth will be shaken; when you will come to judge the age with fire. I am made to tremble, and I am afraid, since trial and anger are coming. That day, a day of anger, disaster and sorrow, a mighty day, and one exceedingly bitter: Give them eternal rest, Lord, and may perpetual light shine on them. May the angels receive you in paradise: may the martyrs receive you as you arrive, and bring you into the holy city of Jerusalem. May the choir of angels receive you, and with Lazarus, once a beggar, may you have eternal rest. You are cordially invited to meet the performers at a reception in the Lilly Room located down the hall to your right. 3
