East Avenue, Chico, CA 95926 893-3171 111secretary@sbcglobal.net www.chicofreemasons.org Vol. 160 No. 11 A Tradition of Freemasonry in Chico since 1856 The next meeting of the Book Club will be: When: Thursday, December 15th at 6:00pm - 8:00pm Where: Lodge Library At this meeting, we will be discussing the book " Enlightenment: The Philosophy, History, and Wisdom of Freemasonry" Edited by Bro. Michael Poll. This book's discussion will be open to Master Masons. As we loose the light of the winter season it bids us to develop our own light in reading and deep meditation. From Amazon.com: Mike Poll has pulled together a variety of essays from past generations and presented them for the enlightenment of Masons today. These are time-tested thoughts and ideas which older members may have encountered decades ago but which newer members may have never seen. Regardless of your age, you'll find this small book a delight to read. It is one of the most popular books in print. A education from the first page to last. This collection of classic papers brings back to life some of the giants in literature.the articles he has included are: "The Meaning of Initiation" by Frank C. Higgins; "Operative Masonry: Early Days in the Era" by Robert I. Clegg; " Jurisprudence" by Roscoe Pound; "Freemasons in the American Revolution" by Charles S. Lobingier; "A Bird's-Eye View of History" by H.L. Haywood; "Women and Freemasonry" by Dudley Wright; "In the Interests of the Brethren" by Rudyard Kipling; "The Egyptian Influence on Our Ceremonial and Ritual" by Thomas Ross; "Anderson's Constitutions of 1723" by Lionel Vibert; "The Rise and Development of Anti- Masonry in America, 1737-1826" by J. Hugo Tatsch; "The Spiritual Significance of Freemasonry" by Silas H. Shepherd; "Rosicrucianism in Freemasonry" by H.V.B. Voorhis; "The New Atlantis and Freemasonry" by A.J.B. Milborne; "Masonry and World Peace" by Joseph Fort Newton and more." About the Author Michael R. Poll is a Fellow and Past President of The Society, a Fellow of the Philalethes Society, a Fellow of the Maine Lodge of Research and a Full Member of the Texas Lodge of Research. A New York Times Bestselling writer and publisher, he is a prolific writer, editor and publisher of and esoteric books. As time permits, he travels and speaks on the history of Freemasonry, with a particular focus on the early history of the Scottish Rite. WHERE TO GET THE BOOK You can obtain the book on Amazon.com in both paper and electronic format at a very reasonable price for used copies, some as low as $9.95. Also check our www.abebooks.com for great used deals as well. Prior to the meeting, we will be emailing the author to provide us guiding questions to encourage thought and foster discussion. This is a convivial as well as an educational gathering so please feel free to imbibe in a favorite yuletide beverage, if you like, and bring a bit of Christmas food cheer. Even if you choose to not read the book come join the discussion and brotherly support. Please RSVP by sending an email to Bro. Steve Catterral, oldegold@hotmail.com or Bro. Dean Fairbanks, dhfairbanks@csuchico.edu We hope to see you there! FROM THE EAST The holidays are already upon us and I reflect on how quickly the year has passed. Christmas is always my favorite time of year because We love decorating our tree. We have ornaments from the early 1920,s and from every era since that time, many hand blown from Europe and Germany, some from Holland, Peru and around the world. My wife always delicately packs and then unpacks them every year and we are grateful to carry on these traditions knowing that some were on our decedents tree and we hope to pass them to our next generation. The Rainbow girls are doing their annual wreath drive, if its not to late try to contact the advisors to see if you can still order one, they are beautiful and smell wonderful. If all has gone well in October, our new brothers George Wise and Scott Wonocott will be Fellowcrafts and a big congratulations is in order. If we are lucky enough we will try to schedule a Past Masters night for one of the 3rd degree's. I look forward to this. Please officers attend practices for our degrees so the new members receive a good experience. It is the participation from the lodge brothers that see our lodge continue into the future, without your help Masonry would come to a grinding halt in our area. Thank you, to all the Past Masters who answered the summons last month to discuss how to proceed going forward with the administration of the Blue Lodge, it was a real eye opener for me. Grand Lodge has come and gone, Chico's new website that Dean Fairbanks manages was showcased and admired, it was even said that it will be a model for lodge websites going forth into the future, Congratulations Dean and Thank you!!. Book Club met in the lodges conference room and was a Continued on page 2...
...Continued from page 1 nice gathering, we ate Brauts and Deans wife baked a German apple cake with wild apples that were delicious, if you would like to participate, you can go to the lodge website to see which book we will review for the next meeting and even if you don't have time to read the book, come join in on the discussion. Steve made a wonderful dinner last month!! the slow-cooked chicken with white wine, tarragon cream sauce was excellent and really made the meal. After the meeting we had great participation with the clean up, but a special thanks needs to be given to Mike Pingatore as he really worked hard and went the extra mile with the dishes and mopping up of the kitchen area I really appreciated his help, even our guest from Utah Adam chipped in with the washing of the dishes, Thanks to ALL who assisted. During this November s Stated Meeting, the National Presidential elections will be happening at our Lodge because it is a voter election station. The area where we would have the Stated dinner will be used for the voter booths so WE WILL (NOT) HAVE A STATED MEETING DINNER IN NOVEMBER due to how busy the lodge will be that night with the elections of our nations president. CHICO NILE CLUB On October 10, Chico Nile Club welcomed Her Majesty, Queen Lynda Languasto of Menzaleh Temple, Daughters of the Nile, for her Official Visit. Queen Lynda was accompanied by 14 members of the household, which included five Past Queens as well as Princess Royal, Barbara Mustard. Prs. Ada Langie, Jill Ramsey and their helpers had the dining room lavishly decorated in a Hallowe'en theme for the occasion, with individual "Trick or Treat" bags for all. A delicious luncheon, prepared by Pr. Andrea Edson, was served. During her remarks, Queen Lynda was very complimentary of the condition of the Minute Book and Treasurer's Books upon audit. Our visitors also enjoyed shopping at our boutique table, which was well stocked with items donated by our members. Our next meeting will be Monday, November 14, and we will be back at the sewing machines and quilt frames, completing items for the patients at Shriners Hospital, followed by lunch ($3) and our meeting. We hear, however, that he is now burdened with a lot of extra time on his hands and may be getting under foot around the house. Some of the well-meaning members of Chico Royal Arch Chapter #42 have expressed a desire to help remedy the problem and ease Steve s transition into retirement by giving him something to do. I m certain that Steve will make a point of being at the next stated convocation to defend himself. Our next stated conclave will be on Wednesday November 16th at 7:30 PM. We know that Sister Marie and Brother Bill are excited to begin The Greatest Adventure year with treasure chests, pyramids, tigers and eagles and a new corps of officers. Our King, Companion Mike Hilton has informed us that he will is moving out of state and can no longer serve our Chapter. With this in mind, we need to find some Companions that are willing to take on the job of piloting our Chapter. A pot luck dinner will be served at 6:30 pm before our meeting. All Companions are invited to attend the potluck and share in the fellowship and food. Ladies are always welcome to attend our dinners. Bob Morrison High Priest RAINBOW The Chico-Paradise Rainbow Girls are enjoying the start of the new term! The girls started the term off with a service project with the Paradise green bag pick up. Our girls have a route that they have covered for nearly a year and a half! This wonderful project helps supply the food bank in Paradise and the surrounding area. The girls are working hard with their Christmas wreath sale. This yearly fundraiser helps our local girls attend the state convention. The convention will be held in Fresno in April. Together we can help the girls reach their goal. If you would like to buy a wreath or make a donation it would be greatly appreciated!!! We love our supportive family! We would like to encourage you to come and visit us and see what the girls have been up to. We are also always interested in sharing our wonderful order with any girls 11-20.
