BAPTISMS Brianna Lynn Ackermann Emma Lillian Arrigo Taylor Catherine Mounce Peyton Madison Oakley-Ricci Leo Robert Schirripa For Those Who Died in the Lord Thomas N. Telera Maria N. Coletti Frank J. Parente FATHER S DAY NOVENA CARDS Available in the Church or the Rectory office Pentecost Sunday He breathed on them and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit. What did the disciples think at this moment? They had witnessed a lot of astonishing things in their time with Christ: healing the sick, multiplying the loaves and fishes, turning water into wine, walking on water, and now the Lord s resurrection from the dead, among other things. But Jesus had never breathed on them before. And in this case, nothing dramatic seemed to take place. Perhaps the disciples wondered if anything had actually happened. Jesus spoke about the Holy Spirit, but other than the breeze from his breath, they didn t experience anything unusual. Until Pentecost. Then, the wind changed. Suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, the first reading tells us. Now the drama unfolded as the Holy Spirit was revealed in tongues as of fire, and the once fearful disciples began to proclaim the Gospel with courage and conviction. Clearly, something had happened when Jesus gave the gift of the Holy Spirit to his disciples. But they didn t really put the gift to use until later, When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled. What gifts have we received that we haven t put to use? What graces lay dormant in our souls? At baptism, we receive the Holy Spirit and at confirmation, the gifts and fruits of the Spirit are given to us in their fullness. These sacraments are like receiving the breath of Christ. But have we experienced our own personal Pentecost? Have we allowed these supernatural gifts to rise to the surface of our lives? On this anniversary of the Holy Spirit s arrival, may we follow St. Paul s advice and stir into flame the gift of God that you have (2 Tm 1:6). -3-

From the Pastor s Pen My dear People, This month, dedicated to The Sacred Heart of Jesus, is also the month in which we celebrate our Patronal Feast of St. Anthony of Padua. How well these two celebrations fit together! The unlimited love and mercy of God is expressed in the Sacred Heart of His Son and the full response to that Divine Gift is expressed in the life of St. Anthony. Jesus tells us that there is no greater love than the love of the one who is willing to lay down his life for a friend. In response to the love Jesus expressed for us on the Cross ( Father forgive them ), Saint Anthony desired to leave his native Portugal and to go to Africa to witness to Christ even to death as a martyr. We see the model for Christian life in the life of St. Anthony who wanted to follow Jesus totally even to death on a Cross. It was this open generosity of St. Anthony to the will of Christ that made it possible for him to accept a different path than the one he had originally sought. No matter how selfless his desire to lay down his life with Christ in a brutal death, his greater desire was to do all things for and in Christ. That path lay to Italy and Padua and not to Africa. Anthony accepted God s will because it was to follow God s will, which led him to seek martyrdom. God s will be done. Instead of mounting a cross, St. Anthony mounted a pulpit and his homilies fed the inquiring minds of some of the brightest students in Europe. The poor and disadvantaged were not neglected in this intellectual feast. St. Anthony s Bread is an apt symbol for this concern for the physical hunger of the poor and their more basic needs. As Jesus preached to the religious scholars of his day, but never forgot the needs of the sick and poor, so this Son of St. Francis reached out to all humanity in Jesus name. The life of Saint Anthony can teach us many things. Amongst them are: 1. A concern for the nurturing of our knowledge of God in Christ and an adult ongoing growth in the knowledge of our faith. 2. A concern for the physical needs of the poor as well as their spiritual needs. 3. A willingness to accept changes in our own life that we might not choose on our own. All things are possible with Christ, St. Anthony can help us grow in a deeper understanding of this truth. St. Anthony of Padua, pray for us, -4-

Liturgy & Music As we begin to feel the warmth of summer, we can reflect that we celebrate the feasts of Corpus Christ (June 22), the Sacred Heart of Jesus (June 27) and the Immaculate Heart of Mary (June 28). God is Love and the Sacred Heart of Jesus present on earth in the Blessed Sacrament is the human manifestation of God's Love for men. Appropriately June is considered the month for weddings where human hearts join and cooperate with the Creator in bringing forth new life. The family they create is a human reflection of the Blessed Trinity. Br. Fran Other principle feasts of this month are Sts. Marcellinus and Peter (June 2), St. Charles Lwanga and Companions (June 3), St. Boniface (June 5), St. Norbert (June 6), St. Ephrem (June 9), St. Barnabas (June 11), St. Anthony of Padua (June 13), St. Aloysius Gonzaga (June 21), the Birth of St. John the Baptist (June 24), St. Josemaria Escriva (June 26), St. Cyril of Alexandria (June 27), St. Irenaeus (June 28), Solemnity of Sts. Peter and Paul (June 29) and the First Martyrs of the Church (June 30). The feasts of St. Justin (June 1), and Sts. John Fisher and Thomas More (June 22), are superseded by the Sunday liturgy. The Adult Choir which sings at the 10:30am Sunday Mass will be singing through the summer months. We are looking for additional choir members, men, women, college and high school students who have a love of music. If you are interested, just come up to the choir gallery and sing along at the 10:30 am Mass. That way you can see what we do and have a trial-run. ALL ARE WELCOME -7-
