What about the Transfiguration, which describes Jesus speaking with Moses and Elijah? Where did they come from? Answer: The tradition about the 99 sheep being angels is the common explanation of the early Fathers of the Church. As for Moses and Elijah and we might add Enoch, whom Scripture says was taken to God without dying (Gn5:24;Heb 11:15) - where exactly they were prior to Christ reopening the gates of heaven is not clear. Scripture uses the word heaven in different senses. Sometimes it means areas above the earth, where the clouds and rain are. Sometimes a higher or second heaven is referred to, where the stars and planets are. At other times, it refers to the abode of God, sometimes called the third heaven. When St. Paul speaks of being caught up into the third heaven (2 Cor12:2), he is most surely speaking of the very abode of God. The layout of the ancient temple also had a threefold dimension. There was the sanctuary where the priests and Levites ministered the animal sacrifices just outside the temple building. There was the holy place just inside the temple building where the showbread and the menorahs were. And there was the Holy of Holies, where God had his dwelling and the Ark of the Covenant was located. When Moses, Elijah and Enoch are taken up to heaven, we cannot be certain exactly where they resided. However, it seems very unlikely that they were taken to the third heaven and beheld the very face of God. That surely had to wait for Christ and his ascension with the members of his Body, the Church, to take his seat at the Father s right. Thus, it is more likely that Moses, Elijah and Enoch were taken to a heavenly realm instead of Sheol (the usual abode of the dead that was generally described in unpleasant terms), but not into the third heaven, into the very presence of the Father.
