Unit 6: Lesson 3 People disobey Bible reference Genesis 3; Psalm 100:3; Romans 3:10-12, 23 Lesson aim Main message Bible bit verse To tell the children about Adam and Eve disobeying God and how it resulted in punishment. To help the children realise that disobeying God leads to punishment. Adam and Eve disobeyed God and sinned, and so God did something about it. We all sin. God will do something about it. The Bible bit verse is a verse that is focussed on in the lesson. There is one larger copy of the Bible bit verse (on page 81) which can be shown to the children, and there is one copy for the children (see activity #4 on page 82). Romans 3, verse 23, everyone has sinned. Memory verse Psalm 47, verse 7, God is king over all the world. See page 79 for options and page 80 for a copy of the verse. Vocabulary sin disobeying God; living as if we don t belong to God and don t have to do what he says; doing bad, naughty, wrong things; doing what we shouldn t do and not doing what we should do. Story preparation Print pages 85-87 to use for the Introduction. Cut each page in half. You could paste these pages into a scrapbook with the top half of page 85 as the cover. You can print page 84 and cut out a text box to paste on each page (match picture numbers and text box numbers). Print pages 88-89 for the Story. Clapping rhyme Today s story is not the happiest of topics, so I suggest you do this clapping rhyme first to remind the children of God s love. You could do the clapping rhyme before the Introduction or between the Introduction (which is a long one) and the Story if you feel that the children would benefit from a concentration break. For this rhyme there are three claps per line (one clap with both hands, one clap with one hand on one knee and one clap with other hand on other knee). So you clap both hands together once and then clap right hand on right knee and then left hand on left knee, then back to both hands together. God made us. God knows us. God loves us. UNIT 6: LIVING GOD S WAY LESSON 3: PEOPLE DISOBEY 75

Introduction [show page 1] I m going to tell you about someone called Sally. This story about Sally is not from the Bible. Sally and her mum were going to visit an old lady called Mrs. Morrison. Before they left, Sally s mum told Sally not to touch any of Mrs. Morrison s special things. [show page 2] When Sally was at Mrs. Morrison s home, there were lots of special things. Sally felt mad! She was cross that she wasn t allowed to touch any of Mrs. Morrison s beautiful things. [show page 3] Sally saw a music box on the table. She knew that her mum told her not to touch anything, but it was a beautiful music box and Sally really wanted to hold it just for a short time. Would Sally obey her mum and just look at the music box and not touch it? No, Sally disobeyed her mum and she picked up the music box. Sally did what she wasn t supposed to. [show page 4] Oh no! When Sally picked up the music box it slipped and she dropped it. The music box broke! So Sally disobeyed her mum and now she broke the music box too! What will happen when Sally s mum sees what has happened? Will she say it doesn t matter and give Sally some ice-cream? Or will she punish Sally because she disobeyed and did something wrong? I think that Sally s mother will punish Sally, don t you? If she gave her ice-cream, that would be like she hadn t really done anything wrong; but she had done something wrong. Sally had disobeyed her mother. So giving her ice-cream wouldn t be fair or the right thing to do. But it would be fair for Sally to be punished, because Sally did disobey her mum. Sally deserved to be punished because she disobeyed and did the wrong thing. [show page 5] Then Sally s mum came into the room and saw what happened. She was angry that Sally had disobeyed her. She was sad that the music box had broken. Sally s mum told Sally that she would be punished and she wouldn t be allowed to play with her favourite toys her doll, her ball and her skipping rope for a whole week. Sally was sad. Sally was sorry that she had disobeyed and done something wrong. But just because Sally was sorry didn t fix the broken music box. It was too late. The music box was broken and it couldn t be fixed. Story This true story is from the Bible in Genesis 3. [show page 88] Last week we heard about Adam and Eve living in the beautiful garden called Eden. Adam took care of the garden. God knew and loved Adam and Eve and he knew how they should live. God told them how he wanted them to live. God told Adam that he could eat from any tree in the garden, and there was only one tree which God told him not to eat from [point to the centre tree]. UNIT 6: LIVING GOD S WAY LESSON 3: PEOPLE DISOBEY 76

God wanted Adam and Eve to obey him and do what he said. God said that if they eat from that tree they will die. But Adam and Eve didn t obey. They did what God told them not to do. They ate the fruit from the tree God told them not to eat. Adam and Eve disobeyed God. God wanted them to obey his words, but they didn t. Just like Sally disobeyed her mum. After they disobeyed God, Adam and Eve hid from God. God called out for Adam, but Adam was hiding because he was afraid. Adam couldn t be friends with God like he was before he disobeyed. Once Adam and Eve lived in the beautiful garden of Eden where everything was good. Now they had disobeyed God, and God punished them their friendship with each other was spoilt there would now be pain and sadness, when there wasn t any before [show page 89] they had to leave the garden and there would be things like weeds and lots of hard work they couldn t be friends with God like they were and one day they would die just like God said. When people disobey God it s called sin. Sin is disobeying God. We are all made by God and belong to God. Sin is living as if we don t belong to God and don t have to do what he says. Sin is doing wrong. Sin is not doing what we should and doing what we shouldn t do. [show page 81] Here s our Bible bit verse for today. It s Romans 3, verse 23, everyone has sinned. Everyone sins and disobeys God and we all deserve to be punished. God s punishment for sin is being shut out of heaven where God and everything good is, and being on your own. People can t be friends with God because of their sin. That s bad news, isn t it? But God did something about this. It s really good news. We ll hear more about that next week. Conclusion... God wanted Adam and Eve to obey him and do what he said. But they didn t. Adam and Eve disobeyed God and because they disobeyed God, they were punished. Adam and Eve had to leave the beautiful garden of Eden; life was going to be hard and now people would die. We are just like Adam and Eve. We disobey God too. God tells us in the Bible that everyone has sinned. So we deserve to be punished too. Adam and Eve disobeyed God and sinned, and so God did something about it. We all sin. God will do something about it. UNIT 6: LIVING GOD S WAY LESSON 3: PEOPLE DISOBEY 77

Today s story was a sad one. But I want you to remember that there is a happy ending, but we won t hear all the happy ending today. This is what I want you to remember until then: (do the clapping rhyme again) God made us. God knows us. God loves us. What about us? We can learn some things from today s true story. God made us, we belong to him and he knows how he wants us to live God wants us to obey him. But we can forget that, or think it doesn t matter, just like Adam and Eve. But when Adam and Eve disobeyed God, it did matter, didn t it? It spoilt their friendship with God and it changed everything. God tells us in the Bible that everyone sins. Remember our Bible bit [show page 81] everyone has sinned. We all sin and disobey God. God also tells us in the Bible that he did something about it. It s good news very, very good news but we ll have to wait until next week to hear it! Book Read page 83 to the children, the third page of the book. (Keep this page for next week s lesson too.) Then read the first three pages of the book (pages 47, 64 and 83). Pray Saying sorry for the wrong things that we do that deserve God s punishment. Pray that God will help us to live his way, and not our way. Activity suggestions 1. Drawing Before the lesson, print page 90 for each child. In the lesson read the text and talk about what the children could draw. The children then each draw a picture. 2. Colouring This activity is suitable for younger children. Print pages 91-92 for each child. In the lesson, read the text and then the children colour the pages. UNIT 6: LIVING GOD S WAY LESSON 3: PEOPLE DISOBEY 78

3. Memory verse Before the lesson, print page 93 for each child and find green and blue paper, and either rip it or cut it into small pieces. Read the memory verse to the children and explain the activity. In the top box the children draw a crown. In the lower box, the children make a world by pasting on pieces of green and blue paper. It would be helpful to show the children a globe or a map of the world and show them the country where you live and also how there are blue areas which are the sea and then there are countries. The children could cover the circle with blue paper sea and then rip green paper into countries and paste them on the sea. Alternatively, you can give them green and blue paper pieces (which you have ripped or cut beforehand). 4. Bible bit page Before the lesson, print page 82 for each child. In the lesson, read the verse to the children. The children decorate around the text box by colouring the patterns, or adding to the patterns by drawing, pasting (coloured paper shapes or rolled tissue paper balls) or adding stickers. Memory verse Psalm 47, verse 7, God is king over all the world. Option 1: actions: Psalm 47 verse 7 God is king over all the world say Psalm forty then show seven fingers for seven show seven fingers again point up put both hands vertically on head as if making a big crown make a big circle with arms Option 2: cards: For this option just show the cards on page 80. Print page 80 and cut out each card. UNIT 6: LIVING GOD S WAY LESSON 3: PEOPLE DISOBEY 79

Adam and Eve disobeyed God and sinned, and so God did something about it. They were punished. One of the punishments was that they had to leave the garden of Eden. This true story is in the Bible in Genesis 3. 90
