The Book of GENESIS

111111

Genesis 11:31 12:3 31 And Terah took his son Abram and his grandson Lot, the son of Haran, and his daughter-in-law Sarai, his son Abram s wife, and they went out with them from Ur of the Chaldeans to go to the land of Canaan; and they came to Haran and dwelt there. 32 So the days of Terah were two hundred and five years, and Terah died in Haran. 1 Now the Lord had said to Abram: Get out of your country, from your family and from your father s house, to a land that I will show you. 2 I will make you a great nation; I will bless you and make your name great; and you shall be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse him who curses you; and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.

Genesis 12:4 9 4 So Abram departed as the Lord had spoken to him, and Lot went with him. And Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran. 5 Then Abram took Sarai his wife and Lot his brother s son, and all their possessions that they had gathered, and the people whom they had acquired in Haran, and they departed to go to the land of Canaan. So they came to the land of Canaan. 6 Abram passed through the land to the place of Shechem, as far as the terebinth tree of Moreh. And the Canaanites were then in the land. 7 Then the Lord appeared to Abram and said, To your descendants I will give this land. And there he built an altar to the Lord, who had appeared to him. 8 And he moved from there to the mountain east of Bethel, and he pitched his tent with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east; there he built an altar to the Lord and called on the name of the Lord. 9 So Abram journeyed, going on still toward the South.

Faith or Works? What s Going On Here? 1 What then shall we say that Abraham our father has found according to the flesh? 2 For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God. 3 For what does the Scripture say? Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness. Rom. 4:1-3 5 Therefore He who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you, does He do it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? 6 just as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness. 7 Therefore know that only those who are of faith are sons of Abraham. 8 And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel to Abraham beforehand, saying, In you all the nations shall be blessed. 9 So then those who are of faith are blessed with believing Abraham. Gal. 3:5-9

Faith or Works? What s Going On Here? 8 By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. 9 By faith he dwelt in the land of promise as in a foreign country, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise; 17 By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises offered up his only begotten son, Heb. 11:8-9,17 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast. Eph. 2:8-9

Faith or Works? What s Going On Here? 17 By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises offered up his only begotten son, Heb. 11:17 So that seems pretty clear and everything is decided, right? Well what about this? 20 But are you willing to recognize, you foolish fellow, that faith without works is useless? 21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up Isaac his son on the altar? 22 You see that faith was working with his works, and as a result of the works, faith was perfected. Jam. 2:20-22

Faith or Works? What s Going On Here?

Luke 5:18-25 18 And some men were carrying on a bed a man who was paralyzed; and they were trying to bring him in and to set him down in front of Him. 19 But not finding any way to bring him in because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and let him down through the tiles with his stretcher, into the middle of the crowd, in front of Jesus. 20 Seeing their faith, He said, Friend, your sins are forgiven you. 21 The scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this man who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone? 22 But Jesus, aware of their reasonings, answered and said to them, Why are you reasoning in your hearts? 23 Which is easier, to say, Your sins have been forgiven you, or to say, Get up and walk? 24 But, so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins, He said to the paralytic I say to you, get up, and pick up your stretcher and go home. 25 Immediately he got up before them, and picked up what he had been lying on, and went home glorifying God.

Luke 5:18-25 1. In vs 20 what did Jesus see and what did he do in response? 2. In vs 21 what was the religious leaders objection? 3. What reason did Jesus give in vs 24 for healing the man?

Jesus on the Cross 30 Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, It is finished! And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit. John 19:30 It is finished. Found only in the Gospel of John, the Greek word translated it is finished is tetelestai, an accounting term that means paid in full. When Jesus uttered those words, He was declaring the debt owed to His Father was wiped away completely and forever. Not that Jesus wiped away any debt that He owed to the Father; rather, Jesus eliminated the debt owed by mankind the debt of sin.

Jesus on the Cross and Beyond 1. In John 19:30 what spiritual transaction takes place on the Cross? Are people able to see spiritual transactions? 2. In light of what we learned from the story in Luke 5:18-25, what was necessary still? What physical act did God use to confirm the spiritual transaction on the Cross?

Abraham s Spiritual Transaction 8 By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. 11:8-9,17 20 But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead? 21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar? 22 Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made perfect? Jam. 2:20-22

Abrahams Spiritual Transaction 1. What was Abraham s spiritual transaction that is described in Hebrews 11? Are people able to see spiritual transactions? 2. In light of what we learned from the stories in Luke 5:18-25, and John 19:30, what was necessary still according to James 2:20-22? What physical act did God use to confirm Abraham s spiritual transaction?

Saved By Grace Through Faith For Good Works 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast. 10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them. Eph. 2:8-10 And Works Offer Confirmation of Faith 20 But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead? 21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar? 22 Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made perfect? Jam. 2:20-22
