20 18 SPIRITUAL GROWTH CAMPAIGN

small HOW DO I SIGN UP FOR A SMALL GROUP? Stop by the church lobby to see our complete list of all groups and their participants or visit newhanoverumc.org and click on For Adults. Next click on the Small Group Ministry tab in the margin then click on Sign Up for a Small Group. WHAT IS A SMALL GROUP? A group of 12 or so people that meet in convenient locations in our community or at church in order to learn more about the Bible, grow in their faith and meet new friends. WHEN DOES THE SPIRITUAL GROWTH CAMPAIGN BEGIN? Small Groups begin meeting for the church-wide study the week of February 11th. This 6 week church-wide study continues until the week of March 18th. WHAT IS A SPIRITUAL GROWTH CAMPAIGN? During the Lenten season, New Hanover UMC unites for a common Bible study. This tradition started 13 years ago at New Hanover UMC and we hope you get connected and join a small group for this year s study on Be the Message!

MEN S GROUPS TUESDAY (SPE-01) Time: 7-8:30 pm Leader: Dave Specht Locations: Rotates among members homes WEDNESDAY (MAJ-02) Time: 7-8:30 pm Leaders: John Major and Rick Copeland Location: Gilbertsville THURSDAY (GIA-03) Leader: Bob Giannetti Location: NHUMC Modular Time: 8 pm FRIDAY (SNY-04) Leader: Dave Snyder Location: NHUMC Room 205 Time: 9 am I got serious about finding a small group about two years ago as I had come through a very difficult time and looking for a way to strengthen my relationship with Christ. Through my men s small group I have found a way to help and be helped. Our small group is now expanding to include volunteering in our community. I would encourage everyone to try a small group. I am so much more comfortable with my faith and I think God wants us to get outside ourselves and joining a small group is a great first step. - Marc Soda

We are a diverse group age-wise, ranging from children age five that come with their parents to adults in their 90 s! We also welcome Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals. - Kathryn Midgley

That first small group has changed over the years with new people joining and others moving on to other groups; however, looking back over the past 12 years, it has been the place where our closest friendships were established. Our kids grew up together and our families continue to live out our lives together as we encourage each other in our faith in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! - Greg Scott

More Small Groups In addition to this year s church-wide study we are pleased to offer: Celebrate Recovery led by John Niarhos You ve undoubtedly heard the expression that time heals all wounds. Often people carry hurts from 30 or 40 years ago. The truth is time only extends the pain if the problem isn t dealt with. Celebrate Recovery (CR) is a biblical and balanced program to help people overcome their hurts, habits and hang-ups. Based on Jesus teachings in the Sermon on the Mount, CR program is unique and many lives have been transformed toward Christ-like maturity at New Hanover UMC because of CR. CR meets Thursday evenings at NHUMC sanctuary lower level dining area 7:00-9:00PM. For more information contact John Niarhos at rniarhos@verizon.net or Tiffani Williams at twbullypups@yahoo.com APEX Junior and Senior High Youth Groups The teenagers in the Junior and Senior High Youth Groups will also be participating in the church-wide study. Contact Todd Pearage if your teen would like to join, toddp@newhanoverumc.org. More information on these groups can be found online at www.newhanoverumc.org Why join a Small Group in the New Year? After work I usually try to go to the gym even though I don t feel like it. Sometimes I also feel the same in my spiritual life that I could wave my spiritual wand and poof! I am living the abundant life Jesus has promised. But it doesn t happen that way; it takes time and we have to actively pursue the spiritual life. Being in a small group with people who desire a relationship with God is an invaluable part of our spiritual growth. God uses those in our small groups to encourage us, love us and help us. In Philippians 2:12-13 Apostle Paul encourages us to...work out your own salvation for it is God who works in you. Paul is not saying to earn our salvation, rather to work out our salvation daily (much like going to the gym!). So join a spiritual gym this Lenten season and sign up for a small group. - Heather Wallace

The Be the Message is a Church-wide Challenge that will ignite you and your church into a nationwide movement to not just talk the talk, but walk the walk and help you move beyond spoken words and actually live out the gospel message. Be The Message Chris and Kerry Shook, Authors of Be the Message Photo by Karey Miller Photography Kerry and Chris Shook give us a powerful guide on how to stop hiding behind our image and truly discover and live our authentic life message. Rick Warren One of the greatest proofs of the resurrection of Christ is a life that s been transformed by His love. Kerry and Chris Shook awaken us to the powerful truth that the tomb is empty so our lives can be filled with Jesus. Be the Message will take you on the life-altering adventure of being the voice, hands, feet and heart of our Lord to a lost and hurting world. Lee Stroebel, Best-selling author of The Case for Christ and The Case for Faith Kerry and Chris Shook will inspire you to live a life of action in their new book, Be the Message. As followers of Jesus, we re called to be doers of the Word, not just hearers. Kerry and Chris will motivate and equip you in your quest to make a difference through your deeds.
