www.crownoflifechurch Life @ crown Blessed Advent to you and yours! It is a great temptation to rush past the season of Advent right to Merry Christmas! After all, Christmas is the point; we celebrate our Savior in the flesh. Advent is difficult in our technological age because Advent is the season of waiting. Our cultural view of time as money makes waiting for anything appear foolish. But the church year begins with Advent because It is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord., as Jeremiah tells us in Lamentations 3:26. During Advent, the church confesses the wisdom that Jeremiah spoke so long ago:. The church s observance of Advent can serve as a quiet, peaceful oasis for people who are harried and hassled and trying to run in every direction at once. The church invites her children and the children of the world to come aside during these days for some spiritual rest and reflection on the promises of God. By taking this time, we can find the hope, peace and joy of Christ. We see the promise of the Savior in the Old Testament, the hope of God s chosen Israel. Hope in God for salvation runs like a golden thread from Genesis to Malachi. After 500 years of silence, that thread shines anew in the first words of Matthew through Revelation. So Advent is a season for immersion in the words of Scripture, especially those promises of Christ's birth, of His life-giving presence in His Church through the Holy Sacraments, and of eternal life at His final coming. Advent offers a season to enjoy the peace of God because it is a time of confession and repentance. Peace is elusive to us because of sin. From Adam s fall we see marriage conflict: Adam blames sin on the woman you put here with me. Cain murdered his brother Abel. The rest is history. Advent gives us a time of reflection on God s gift of the Prince of Peace. We see our sin, confess, and receive the Lord s forgiveness. We remember the cost of peace: We esteemed Him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But He was wounded for our transgressions; He was crushed for our iniquities; upon Him was the chastisement that brought us peace (Isaiah 53:4b-5). Advent is a season of joy! The angel said to them, Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of a great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. (Luke 2:10 11). The world s idea, and sometimes even our idea, of joy is when we have our own way. We find the opposite is true throughout the Bible. When man gets his way, when our sinful nature is left to pursue happiness, misery and sorrow often follow. Sin, another s or our own, interferes with the joy God would have us experience. God did not leave us in our misery; so we have joy in the face of our suffering. We have joy in life in Christ. We have joy in sharing the Good News. The Advent season reminds us of all of these blessings while we wait and pray, Come, Lord Jesus! Be sure to attend Wednesday evening services, this month, at 7:00 pm. May you find the Hope, Peace, and Joy of Advent, Pastor Lemley UPCOMING EVENTS 1. Who s Who at Crown We all know Jeff Rickabus, our friendly usher at Crown of Life Church. He is a real people person who always reaches out to us with a big smile and a handshake. We have been lucky to have him serve at Crown for several years. Before he came to us, he served as head usher at St. Luke s (across from O.U.) and also at St. Paul s on Romeo Rd. in Rochester for 10 years. Jeff resides in Rochester in the condo he has owned for 17 years. Jeff has also worked for 17 years as a custodian contracted by Gonzales Group at International Auto Components (IAC), North America. He has been a bus boy and a factory worker too, but he really likes his job at IAC. Jeff loves to bowl. He is in a league with fellow usher, Larry Belore. They bowl every Wednesday night. Jeff wishes each and every one at Crown a Merry Christmas! We thank him for his dedication and service. Crown Member Shop for Children at Christmas: Each year our members take a child's name and purchase Christmas gifts for them. If you can help this year please select a child's ID tag off the Christmas tree in the narthex. Remember to fill in your information at the top of the tag, cut it off and leave it in the basket on the credenza. Also don't forget to pick up a direction sheet that give helpful information in preparing the gifts. All gifts are due on Sunday, December 13th and should be placed under the Christmas tree in the sanctuary. If you have any question please see Lottie Bachelard. Ring the Bells for the Salvation Army: We have an opportunity to start the Christmas season off by helping others on Friday, December 4 th when we collect donations for the Salvation Army.
