Dynamic DISCIPLING Lesson Five CLAIMING JESUS AS MY LIFE To know Jesus as my Saviour is to know my sins are forgiven and that I am a child of God, possessing His Eternal Life. To know Jesus as my Lord means that I acknowledge that I have been crucified with Christ and that I participated in His death, burial, resurrection, and ascension, thus freeing me from slavery to sin's power. By faith I chose to appropriate Christ as My Life just as I received Christ as my Saviour. I have been raised in newness of life to serve my new Lord, Jesus Christ. His expectations are so high that for me to live this supernatural life He has called me to live requires supernatural resources. This also has been provided by God. In this lesson we will learn about the Holy Spirit, and how we can let Jesus be our life by claiming the filling of the Holy Spirit by faith. Accepting Christ means that we are raised to a heavenly level of life. Ephesians 2:6 states that we are seated right now at the right hand of God in Christ. We are there right now in Him! We are talking about entering into something experientially that is already ours positionally - the life of Christ. His life is received the day we are saved, but we need to enter into the fullness of Christ's life, into the Spirit-filled life, or the abundant life, as the Bible refers to it. (John 10:10) As Christ's disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit, they received supernatural power that changed them from fearful men into radiant witnesses for Christ. They were used by God to change the course of history. And that power is available to you, to enable you to live a holy and fruitful life in Jesus Christ. To claim Jesus as My Life is to stop trying to live for Christ or work for Him in the energy of the flesh. Like Paul, I must claim, Not I, but Christ. By whose power did Paul live and serve? Galatians 2:20 Colossians 1:28, 29 3

Christ gave the amazing promise, I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in my name... John 14:12,13a The Holy Spirit is the source of the supernatural life. To live this new life, we must understand who He is and how His power can be appropriated. WHO IS THE HOLY SPIRIT? Read Acts 5:3, 4. Peter believed the Holy Spirit to be. In John 14:16, Jesus called the Holy Spirit. Matthew 28:19 says, Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit... FATHER The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity. He is a person equal in every way to the Father and the Son. SON HOLY SPIRIT WHAT ARE THE FUNCTIONS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IN OUR LIVES? John 3:5 John 14:17 John 14:26 John 15:26 John 16:13 John 16:14 Acts 1:8 Romans 8:26 4

To be filled with the Spirit is to abide in Christ. WHY BE FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT? To be filled with the Holy Spirit is to glorify God.(John 16:1-15) Read John 15:1-8 How is God glorified in our life? (v.5) When we bear spiritual fruit, what does it prove? (v.8) Can we produce spiritual fruit apart from Christ? (v.5) Just as a mature branch produces more fruit than a young branch, so we will produce more spiritual fruit as we mature. What does the farmer do to get the vine to be more fruitful? (v.2) What might God do in our lives to make us more fruitful? What fruit does the Holy Spirit produce in a life under His control? Galatians 5:22, 23 Fruit trees do not produce fruit trees; they produce fruit. The fruit (seeds) produces fruit trees. Likewise, the Holy Spirit produces spiritual fruit in our life. What will be the result of that fruit? Matthew 4:19 5

WHY IS IT THAT MANY CHRISTIANS ARE NOT PRODUCING THIS KIND OF FRUIT? 1 Corinthians 2:14-3:3 identifies natural, carnal (worldly) and spiritual people. Match these circles with the three kinds of people described. C = Christ S = Self C S S C C S * Adapted from the booklet Have You Made the Wonderful Discovery of the Spirit-Filled Life? by Dr. Bill Bright. Read the Booklet for further details. The natural person has not received Christ. He directs his own life and while he may be doing his best to live right, his life is often filled with discord and frustration. The carnal (worldly) person has Christ living in his life but he is insisting on running his own life. Like the natural man, he experiences much discord and frustration. The spiritual person has invited Christ to live in him to direct and empower him. The result is a fruitful life that will glorify God. How does 1 Corinthians 3:1-3 describe the carnal Christian? What is the solution to carnality? Galatians 5:16 Maturity will come as we walk in the Spirit, allowing Him to empower us moment by moment. It is God's goal and purpose that we should be con-formed to His image (Romans 8:29). If we are going to know this conformity, we have to experience His cross and His resurrection so that by the Holy Spirit, Christ can become our life initially, as well 6

as daily. We must let Him do the living, so that He can work unhindered through our lives. An attitude of unconfessed sin will hinder the work of the Holy Spirit in our life. What must we do about unconfessed sin? 1 John 1:9 Is there any sin (attitude or action) in your life at this time that you need to confess? If necessary pause now and confess it. By faith thank God for His forgiveness because of Jesus Christ's death on the cross for you. BY FAITH CLAIM THE FILLING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT What is faith? Hebrews 11:1 Why is faith so important? Hebrews 11:6 What does God promise in 1 John 5:14, 15? What is His command in Ephesians 5:18? Is it God's will that you be directed by the Spirit? If you ask Him to direct your life, will He? How do you know? This prayer is one way to ask God in faith to direct your life. Dear Lord, I have sinned against You by directing my own life. Thank You for forgiving my sins. I now ask You to take complete control of my life. In faith, I now claim the Holy Spirit's power and control and I thank You for directing me. Do you want to give the Holy Spirit permission to direct your life? If so, pray this prayer in faith and claim His fullness. Did you ask the Holy Spirit to direct your life? 7

Is He now in control of your life? How do you know? We receive Jesus Christ as our Saviour by faith. How then are we to live In Christ. Colossians 2:6 Being filled with the Spirit is a daily experience. There are many fillings. In the Greek language, in which the command of Ephesians 5:18 was originally written, this command of God means to be constantly and continually filled, directed and empowered with the Holy Spirit as a way of life. BY FAITH WALK IN THE SPIRIT To walk in the Spirit, is to consciously allow the Holy Spirit to live His life in you throughout each day. If you become aware of anything in your life (attitude or action) that is displeasing to God, thank God that He has forgiven your sins - past, present and future - because of Christ's death on the cross for you. By faith claim His love and forgiveness and continue to walk with Him. WHAT IF YOU AGAIN TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR LIFE? To control your own life is to choose to sin and disobey God. Whenever the Holy Spirit makes you aware of sin in your life: 1. Confess your sin - agree with God concerning it and thank Him and claim His forgiveness according to 1 John 1:9. Confession involves repentance (changing your attitude and action) 2. Claim the fullness of the Holy Spirit by faith. Trust that He is now directing and empowering your life, according to the command of Ephesians 5:18 and the promise of 1 John 5:14,15. HOW TO LET JESUS BE YOUR LIFE Don't try to live the Christian life. It can't be done! Instead, let Christ in you do the living. Ask, Lord Jesus, what would you do? Then do what He would do. This may seem impossible for you, so simply say, Lord I can't, but you can. I am willing to step out and do it, but You will have to do it through me. Trust the Holy Spirit to empower you. APPLICATION FORGIVE OTHERS Read Ephesians 4:32. What are we commanded to do? Are there some people you need to forgive? If so list their names. Jesus has already forgiven them as He has forgiven you. By faith do what Jesus would do. The Holy Spirit will empower you to forgive each one. LOVE OTHERS Read John 15:12,13. What are we commanded to do? How did Jesus show His love for you? Make a list of people whom you do not like. You may need to include your own name on this list. Does Jesus love these people? Will you allow Him to love each one through you? 9

Choose one name and ask yourself How might Jesus love that person through me? Jesus would The fruit of the Spirit is love (Galatians 5:22, 23). By faith, do what Jesus would do. The Holy Spirit will empower you to love him/her. Read 1 Corinthians 13. Claim that kind of love for God, others and even for yourself. SHARE CHRIST WITH OTHERS Read Luke 19:10. What was Jesus' purpose in coming to earth? When we are empowered by the Holy Spirit, what will result? Acts 1:8 Make a list of people you know who need to understand about the love and forgiveness of God. Pray for opportunities to share the gospel with each one. Choose one name, and by faith make plans to witness to that person. I will trust the Holy Spirit to empower me to share the gospel with When? (How to witness will be covered in Lesson Eight. Your discipler is also available to help you.) Remember, you are In Christ; He is In You to live and do what He wants. The Holy Spirit will empower you to live the Christ Life. What an opportunity! What potential! Don't waste a moment of it. 10
