LESSON 1 SEPTEMBER 3, 2017 Scripture Lesson Text GEN. 8:20 And No ah builded an altar unto the LORD; and took of every clean beast, and of every clean fowl, and offered burnt offerings on the altar. 21 And the LORD smelled a sweet savour; and the LORD said in his heart, I will not again curse the ground any more for man s sake; for the imagination of man s heart is evil from his youth; neither will I again smite any more every thing living, as I have done. 22 While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease. 9:8 And God spake unto No ah, and to his sons with him, saying, 9 And I, behold, I establish my covenant with you, and with your seed after you; 10 And with every living creature that is with you, of the fowl, of the cattle, and of every beast of the earth with you; from all that go out of the ark, to every beast of the earth. 11 And I will establish my covenant with you; neither shall all flesh be cut off any more by the waters of a flood; neither shall there any more be a flood to destroy the earth. 12 And God said, This is the token of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations: 13 I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth. 14 And it shall come to pass, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow shall be seen in the cloud: 15 And I will remember my covenant, which is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh. 16 And the bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is upon the earth. 17 And God said unto No ah, This is the token of the covenant, which I have established between me and all flesh that is upon the earth. The Rainbow Lesson: Genesis 8:20-22; 9:8-17 Read: Genesis 8:20 9:17 TIME: unknown PLACE: mountains of Ararat GOLDEN TEXT I will establish my covenant with you; neither shall all flesh be cut off any more by the waters of a flood; neither shall there any more be a flood to destroy the earth (Genesis 9:11). Preparing to Teach the Lesson This Sunday s study begins a detailed examination of the covenants of God. In our first unit of study, we examine the signs that God instituted for some of His covenants. TODAY S AIM Facts: to understand the promise and the unconditional nature of God s covenant with Noah. Principle: to grow in confidence that God is faithful to His promises. Application: to recall God s promises and faithfulness at all times. INTRODUCING THE LESSON This week we consider the covenant that God made with Noah and the sign God gave the rainbow. DEVELOPING THE LESSON 1. The promise of the covenant (Gen. 8:20-22). Following the Flood and God s deliverance of Noah and his family (7:1 8:19), Noah built an altar to the Lord. He took some from every clean animal and every clean bird, and he sacrificed those as offerings. This was Noah s way of expressing thanks 4 to the Lord for His deliverance. God received Noah s sacrifice and made a promise. He would never again curse the ground because of anything mankind did. Nor would He ever again kill all living things on the earth, as He had done in the Flood. God declared that what He had done because of the sin of man (Gen. 6:5) He would never do again. He reinforced His words with the promise of the continuity of the seasons (8:22). The covenant, or promise, God made here is sometimes called the Noahic covenant. Since its fulfillment does not depend on any response from mankind, we call it an unconditional covenant. 2. The recipients of the covenant (Gen. 9:8-11). These verses inform us that God s covenant was not just to Noah and his sons; it was also to his seed, or descendants. Since all humanity is descended from Noah, God s covenant applies to all of us today. In verse 10 some additional recipients of this covenant are named: And with every living creature that is with you, of the fowl, of the cattle, and of every beast of the earth with you; from all that go out
