www.holytrinityrcparish.org April 8, 2018 we celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday. So it is fitting that we stop and consider what God s tender mercy truly means for us. First: we must consider the words Pope Francis chose for his papal motto: Miserando atque eligendo. These words emphasize the theme of mercy and this has been Francis guiding principle throughout his papacy. Anyone who knew him was not surprised when he announced a Year of Mercy in fact, a Jubilee Year of Mercy that began on December 8, 2015 and finished on November 20, 2016. In the year that followed, did we as a Church, the sacrament of Jesus Christ, practice mercy? This leads to the second important aspect of today s celebration: there are two kinds of mercy, (a) mercy that is shown by God to humanity, and (b) mercy shown by humanity to others. This semester I have been teaching our deacon candidates from the works of St. Thomas Aquinas. So it is appropriate that I cite St. Thomas now! He writes that in every work of God, there is an element of both mercy and justice, signifying that the two are not opposed to each other. Rather, God acts mercifully, not indeed by going against His justice, but by doing something more than justice (ST, I, q. 21, a. 3). When God shows mercy toward creation, God is not contradicting Himself, rather God is giving us beyond what we are due. Because mercy is accounted as being proper to God, it is not beyond His power or outside His nature to exercise mercy, but is rather a demonstration of His overwhelming love. Remember: justice is not vengeance! Aquinas defines mercy as a virtue, which is the mercy shown from one person to another. He says, Mercy is heartfelt sympathy for another s distress (ST, II.II, q. 30, a. 1). He goes on to say, the motive of mercy, which must be seen in light of another s unhappiness, is, in a very important way not what we might naturally do, namely we might naturally want to do something evil that makes the one suffering feel even worse! What we must move toward spiritually is that pity which will give us the strength to show mercy and help the other person in a moment of need. Just before he was elected Pope, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, in one of his homilies said: Christ s mercy is not a grace that comes cheap, nor does it imply the trivialization of evil. Christ carries the full weight of evil and all its destructive force in his body and in his soul. He burns and transforms evil in suffering, in the fire of his suffering love. The day of vindication and the year of favor converge in the Paschal Mystery, in the dead and Risen Christ. This is the vengeance of God: he himself suffers for us, in the person of his Son. The more deeply stirred we are by the Lord s mercy, the greater the solidarity we feel with his suffering and we become willing to complete in our own flesh what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ As we celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday, let us pray together in the words Pope Francis gave us for the Jubilee Year of Mercy: Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father, and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him. Show us your face and we will be saved. Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief. Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman: "If you knew the gift of God!" You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified. You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved, and forgiven by God. Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind. We ask this of you, Lord Jesus, through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy; you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen.

The Annunciation of the Lord celebrates the angel Gabriel's appearance to the Virgin Mary, announcing that she had been chosen to be the Mother of Our Lord. When is the Annunciation? The Annunciation always falls on March 25, exactly nine months before the birth of Jesus Christ at Christmas. However, the celebration of the feast is transferred to a different date if it falls on a Sunday of Lent, during Holy Week, or during the octave of Easter. The Church considers Masses for the Sundays of Lent, any time in Holy Week, and any time from Easter through the Sunday after Easter Divine Mercy Sunday to be so important that even this Marian feast cannot replace one of them. So, when the Annunciation falls on a Sunday in Lent (before Palm Sunday), it is transferred to the following Monday. If it falls on Palm Sunday or on any day in Holy Week, it is transferred to Low Monday, the Monday after the Sunday after Easter. Here is the day of the week on which the Annunciation falls (and the day and date on which it will be celebrated) this year: Annunciation 2018: Sunday, March 25, 2018 (transferred to Monday, April 9, 2018). The Magnificat of Mary The "Magnificat" or "Canticle of Mary" is taken from the Gospel of Luke 1:46-55. My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God my Savior for He has looked with favor on His lowly servant. From this day all generations will call me blessed: the Almighty has done great things for me, and holy is His name. He has mercy on those who fear Him in every generation. He has shown the strength of His arm, He has scattered the proud in their conceit. He has cast down the mighty from their thrones, and has lifted up the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty. He has come to the help of his servant Israel for he remembered his promise of mercy, the promise he made to our fathers, to Abraham and his children for ever. Perhaps the first and most difficult step toward entering the religious life is leaving one s family, especially one s own mother. This enormous sacrifice can only be sweetened by the awaiting embrace of Mary, the sweetest of mothers, who will never be outdone in generosity. Her perfect example of humility and total abandonment to God s purpose is rich endowment and comfort to the fledgling and life-long security to the seasoned religious. During her life on earth, God asked the Blessed Virgin Mary to be the humble Mother of Jesus and wife of Joseph. Her example of fidelity can be a model for anyone seeking to be faithful to the call God has given them. At the Annunciation, Mary gives an example of obedience to God s will, even when it is shrouded in mystery. Her fidelity as wife and Mother in the hidden life at Nazareth provides a model of humility and poverty, while her intercession at the wedding feast at Cana shows self-forgetful love. Mary s station at the Foot of the Cross reminds us how being faithful to one s calling brings us also to the Foot of the Cross, there to offer everything to Mary, in union with the suffering Jesus, in order to be fruitful for souls. Being a member of a cloistered religious order, I will examine these four moments in the life of Mary as related to the cloistered religious life. Mary was chosen by God for a special mission. Her life, perhaps, seemed not much different from other young women her age. And yet, in a single moment, everything changed. God asked her to be His Mother. She pondered, and she asked a question. God said he could accomplish what was impossible for men. Placing her full trust in God, even though, at the time, she could not imagine what it would bring, she said yes: May it be done to me according to your word. Mary remained the same simple young woman she had been, but that firm YES to God s will opened up a way that changed the course of her life. Because of that yes, a miracle happened: the Virgin became a Mother. Her whole life was fully open to God s will, whatever it may have been, however unsearchable and mysterious it may have been. She could not have fully understood the outcome, but she bowed unhesitatingly to God s will and bore Him Who would change the course of history. There would be many more yeses in her life, culminating at the Foot of the Cross.

By their witness as well as their words, families speak to others of Jesus. They pass on the faith, they arouse a desire for God and they reflect the beauty of the Gospel and its way of life. Christian marriages thus enliven society by their witness of fraternity, their social concern, their outspokenness on behalf of the underprivileged, their luminous faith and their active hope. Their fruitfulness expands and in countless ways makes God s love present in society. Discerning the body 185. Along these same lines, we do well to take seriously a biblical text usually interpreted outside of its context or in a generic sense, with the risk of overlooking its immediate and direct meaning, which is markedly social. I am speaking of 1 Cor 11:17-34, where Saint Paul faces a shameful situation in the community. The wealthier members tended to discriminate against the poorer ones, and this carried over even to the agape meal that accompanied the celebration of the Eucharist. While the rich enjoyed their food, the poor looked on and went hungry: One is hungry and another is drunk. Do you not have houses to eat and drink in? Or do you despise the Church of God and humiliate those who have nothing?
