WELCOME TO SCRIPTURE ADVENTURES! You are about to begin a very exciting adventure through the pages of the Old Testament. Along the way, you ll meet prophets, kings, bad guys, and even a talking donkey! Most importantly though, you ll discover some of God s true principles that will help you with your life. Did you know that the Lord knows how smart and amazing you are? Even though you are still a kid, you can do great things! In New Testament times, the Lord inspired the Apostle Paul to write a letter to a man named Timothy. Timothy was a very young and pretty inexperienced church leader. Like you, he probably didn t feel like he knew the scriptures as well as he wanted to. But Paul encouraged Timothy. He said, Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity (1 Timothy 4:12). Paul was telling Timothy that he could still be an example of faith and belief even though he was young. Paul reminded Timothy about something else important: From a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus (2 Timothy 3:15). You can know the scriptures as a child, too! Learning about the doctrines of the gospel in the scriptures will make you wise unto salvation like Timothy was. A TESTAMENT OF CHRIST The Old Testament is a testament (something that testifies) of Christ. The prophets all looked forward to his coming. They taught about his birth and his mission. They taught about his atonement. As you study the Old Testament, you can strengthen your own testimony of Christ. Old Testament Page 3

INTRODUCTION TO THE OLD TESTAMENT The Old Testament begins with the creation of man and tells the history of one group of God s people from Adam and Eve until about 400 years before Jesus Christ was born. There are many books of scripture, written by lots of different prophets, that make up the Old Testament. Some of the writings of the prophets were gathered and edited by the prophet Ezra about 450 years before Christ was born. Others were put together long after Christ had died. The Old Testament is organized into thirty-nine books. Which are grouped into four sections: 1. The Law These are the first five books: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. They were written by the prophet Moses and cover history from creation until the life of Moses. They contain many laws that God gave Moses and his people, so they are often called The Law. 2. The History This group of books from Joshua through Esther is the history of the children of Israel from the time of Joshua s leadership to the time of Queen Esther in Babylon. Learning the history of God s people will help you see how the Lord worked in the lives of the people and how he can work in your life, too! 3. The Writings and Poetry The books of Job through Song of Solomon are poetic writings. They are from various authors at various times during the history of Israel. The exact time that most of them are written is impossible to tell. 4. The Prophets The rest of the books in the Old Testament contain the writings of prophets who preached repentance to God s people. They are not in chronological order. As you study through Scripture Adventures, you will learn about these books as they fall in history, so you ll be reading them in a different order than they come in your Bible. Old Testament Page 4

STRUCTURE OF THE LESSONS Scripture Adventures will take you through the Old Testament in chronological order the order in which the historical events happened. There are eleven units of Old Testament material and one review unit at the end. In the lessons you ll find an explanation of historical events, comments on gospel principles, and introductions to major characters. In most lessons, you ll also find a text box along the right hand side of the page with verses from the Old Testament for you to read. You will see a reference at the top of the box for the book and chapter that the reading comes from. The verses will be numbered in the text. Some verses will be skipped, or shortened to keep the flow of the story or concentrate on the major points of the passage. Feel fee to mark the text with highlighter, red pencil, or anything that will help you identify the most important parts of the passage. Sometimes you will be asked to underline or circle something specific as you read. Always ask yourself, How can these principles help me in my life? Some of the units have projects or crafts that may help you learn more about a topic. If you like to be creative jump in and have fun. If you want to skip some of the them go ahead. GENESIS 11 TOWER OF BABEL 1 And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech. 2 And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there. 3 And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them thoroughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for morter. 4 And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth. 5 And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded. Finally, you ll be asked to memorize certain key verses that contain important gospel principles. Learning Memory Verses can be a lot of fun. Learn them with your family and make it a game around the dinner table to see who can remember the most! To help you keep track of the verses that you have learned and to keep you practicing them along the way, use the chart in Unit 12 (at the back) to mark off what you have memorized. THE CREATION DAYS 1-4 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth These are the first words in the Old Testament. Do you know what God created on each day? Read the creation story in the verses on the right to find out! As you read, circle keywords in the verses that show what happened during each creative period. When you are finished reading, make a poster showing what happened during each creative period. Label each day. GENESIS 1 THE CREATION 1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. 2 And the earth was without form, and void: and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. 3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. 4 And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. 5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day. 6 And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters. 7 And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so. 8 And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day. 9 And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so. 10 And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that it was good. 11 And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.12 And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good. 13 And the evening and the morning were the third day. 14 And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; 15 And it was so. 16 And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also and God saw that it was good. 19 And the evening and the morning were the fourth day. Day 1 Day 2 Day 3 Day 4 God created the heavens and the earth. Old Testament Page 9

THE CREATION DAYS 5-7 On the sixth day, God created birds and animals. He looked around and saw all that he had done and felt it was good. But he wasn t finished yet. He still had his most important work to do! He had to create physical bodies for his sons and daughters! Read the verses on the right. Use Genesis 1:26-27 to fill in the blanks below with the missing words. Let us make man in our, after our likeness...so God created man in his own, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. Use the poster that you made of the creation to give a presentation to your family about the creation. Talk about: who created the earth what he created (show your poster) GENESIS 1 THE CREATION CONTINUED 20 And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven. 21 And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good. 22 And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth. 23 And the evening and the morning were the fifth day. 25 And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good. 26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. 27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. Day 5 Day 6 Old Testament Page 10

CREATION RESEARCH Do some research into something that God has created. Use books from home, the library, or log on to the internet (with your parents permission). Choose a subject from the list below. Find 8-10 interesting facts about your subject and write about it below: Stars Oceans Sharks Robins Spiders People God created all things. Old Testament Page 11

IN HIS IMAGE The Creation of Man By Michelangelo And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness...so God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created him them (Genesis 1:26-27). Man and woman were God s finest creation. God created them in his image, which means that we have bodies of flesh and blood like his. We look like him. He is our Father and we are his children. The painting above, The Creation of Man, is by the famous Italian artist Michelangelo. He painted many scenes from the creation. On the right is another painting by him. It is God creating the sun, moon, and stars. He tried to show God s strength and power in the painting. Do you like it? Make your own painting or drawing that shows God s power in creation. Creation of the Heavens By Michelangelo Old Testament Page 12

CREATION PROJECT Here is a project to remind you about God s great miracle of creation. It s a recipe for gingerbread kids. As you cut out your gingerbread kids, think about how God made each of us in his own image similar, but no two exactly the same. We are all unique in our own way! In a large bowl, cream together a 3½ ounce package butterscotch pudding, ½ cup butter, ½ cup packed brown sugar, and 1 egg. In a separate bowl combine 1½ cups flour, ½ teaspoon baking soda, 1½ teaspoons ground ginger, and 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon. Stir it into the pudding mixture. Cover the dough and chill in the frig about 1 hour. Now comes the fun part! On a floured counter or board, roll the dough out to about ⅛ inch thick. Use cookie cutters to cut out gingerbread people. Put them on a greased baking sheet, leaving an inch or so between them because they are going to GROW a little when they cook! Bake your cookies at 350º F for about 7-8 minutes. Cool. Decorate. Eat! Kirsi (age 8) and Leah (age 5) roll and cut out gingerbread kids. Old Testament Page 13

MEMORY VERSE COPYWORK Use the space below to copy the words from Genesis 1:26-27. These verses are about the creation. They are important because they tell us that God created man in his own image. We are Heavenly Father s children and he created physical bodies for us that look like his. He gave men and women dominion over all of his other creation because we are his children. GENESIS 1:26-27 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness...so God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created him them. Old Testament Page 14

A PLACE FOR ADAM AND EVE God loved Adam and Eve. He made a beautiful place for them to live and grow. Read the verses on the right. God gave Adam and Eve over the fish, birds, and animals. That means authority over them. God said that his final creations were good (vs. 31). Use the box below to draw a picture of Adam and Eve in the Garden that God created for them. Imagine what animals and plants might have been there. Be creative! GENESIS 1 COMMANDMENTS TO ADAM AND EVE 28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth. 29 And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat. 30 And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so. 31 And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day. Old Testament Page 15
