2013 - New Beginnings To Welcome incoming Beehives, orient them to the YW program, show them what we do and why we do it, we used the movie Tangled as our inspiration. The similarities in the movie to our desire to seek light instead of darkness, good instead of evil are appropriate and fun for the girls to envision. We made a likeness of the Manti Temple ( 5 x 5 ) from heavy wire, wrapped it with white lights and suspended it from the stage with black curtains behind it to set our stage.
We purchased paper lanterns in the values colors (8 size), used them for decorations and sent them home with the girls following the program. We assigned Laurels to do much of the program - explaining Personal Progress, describe their experiences, and share their testimonies. Their words were inspired, well spoken and listened to. We wrote a skit using the characters from the movie. Each described themself and why they were changed by the attitude of Rapunzel who desired to Stand in Holy Places. She demonstrated values that changed every tough situation she found herself in to a positive and good one. She stuck to her values and was determined to get to the light. The girls performed the skit delightfully and had the audience either in rapture or laughter! The entire Young Women (30 girls) performed the Theme Song from Tangled, I See the Light. The Laurels went into the audience to get the New Beehives and brought them into the group for the performance of the song. They all knew the words and loved it! The evening was a great success.
SKIT Once upon a time, in a land far, far away, there lived a beautiful maiden named Rapunzel. Rapunzel was no ordinary girl. She was a select spirit and the princess daughter of a royal family. She carried within her a very special light, everyone thought it was the light of the sun but we know it was the light of Christ. Now, when Rapunzel was a tiny girl, a wicked old woman noticed this light that Rapunzel carried. She knew of it, she knew it was powerful and she wanted it. She did not
know that everyone could have it through good works. She became very jealous and came to want it so badly that she tricked Rapunzel into coming with her into a dark forest where she hid her away in a tall tower. The old woman wanted the light all for herself; she was so greedy and didn t want anyone else to discover what she had. She had no intention of sharing and kept the girl locked away for many years. So, Rapunzel stayed locked up in this tower her whole young life. Being locked away did not stop her from growing into the young woman she was meant to be. Every day she would wake up early to clean the house, and then set about learning new skills, like baking and sewing. She also read many good books like the Book of Mormon and she read it multiple times. She learned and lived each Young Women value everyday of her life. She knew the value of divine nature because she taught herself how to cook and sew. She had knowledge from all the books she read and personal observation of the things around her. She followed the teachings of individual worth for she was always happy and took care of herself. She demonstrated choice and accountability by always dressing modestly and listening to wholesome music. In taking care of the woman she knew as her mother even though she did not get everything she wanted, she did not become bitter or stay angry. This showed an understanding of good works. Integrity came easy for her because she chose to always look for the good in
everything. She was virtuous because she kept herself clean and worthy to have the Holy Ghost. Most of all she had faith. I will let her tell you about that. Rapunzel: (Kristlyn P.) (Introduce yourself first and please just be yourself as you speak this part. Your voice will convey the right emphasis) I was born of a royal family, a good family-- nobody had to tell me, I knew it. I had the light of Christ instilled in me at an early age. I learned to make the best of my situation, believing that I was blessed. I knew how to do many things, taught myself to do many more things and was entirely happy. Each year on my birthday as I watched from that window, I was reminded that I did not understand, but wanted to understand the light that drew my attention so strongly and consistently. As I watched from the tower window, I realized that the most important thing for me was to get to the light - to improve myself day to day but to strive for more. When I had the chance presented to me, I chose to go. The light drew me to it, over many obstacles. I had faith, always, because I knew there was more waiting for me, even in the face of those obstacles. I was not disappointed. Having Faith is good for me. It is important to develop faith to keep all of the commandments of God, knowing that they are given to bless us and bring us joy. Witch (Kristi) (Introduce yourself first and please emphasize the words I and me in each of these
sentences to highlight the selfish nature of the witch.) I fought so hard to keep Rapunzel safe and in one spot so she wouldn t be spoiled. I worked so tirelessly to raise her and do everything I could for her. I couldn t let her out of the tower, and let her discover that she might be a mature, clever and grown up miss. NO WAY! I wanted her to just give up and do what I said, and forget this silly dream of going to the light she thought she wanted. If she would have just come back to me, trusted me... She did not need to find out for herself anyway - I know enough and there is just too much disappointment in the world. I tried to keep her locked away, but No, she had to deceive me and sneak out and got herself in all kinds of trouble that was never worth it. If it weren t for me, she would have been killed. There is just TOO MUCH bad out there, there is NO HOPE. You must just give up. If you give up trying, don t come to me crying; after all, Mother knows best. Thug 1 from the Snuggly Duckling Bar (Missy) (Introduce yourself first as a run down, no good, time wasting oaf.) That criminal, Flynn Ryder came into the bar and we began to confine him for the reward money. All the guys in the bar tried to catch him. The place went wild. She stopped us cold when she cried out, Gimme back my guy! Put him down! I don t know where I am and I need him to get me to the Temple. Find your humanity! Haven t you ever had a dream? I am malicious mean and scary,
great big fat and hairy. I say that I d rather be called deadly but way down deep inside, despite my evil look, and my scars and my hook I realized, then that I had a dream.once. I am not as cruel and viscous as I seem. She showed me that I too could be more. She changed me with her strong testimony. Thug 2 from the Snuggly Duckling Bar (Annie) (Introduce yourself first as the toughest, roughest guy in the Snuggly Duckling) I have starts and bruises, and one of them that oozes. Despite the wart on my nose and all my extra toes, I really want to make a love connection. Though I am one disgusting fighter, make fun when people are screaming, there I am behind that big fascade thinking I had a dream. Like everybody else I had a dream. That beautiful girl stopped me in my tracks with her conviction of following her dream and going to find it. I told her to go and live her dream I knew then that I wanted to stop living a life without purpose. I wanted to live mine too. Flynn Ryder (Tia) (Introduce yourself first as a young, handsome and arrogant wanderer with no real sense of who I am. Please repeat the line from the movie with the same wonder that Flynn Ryder used when he made the frying pan comment.) What was it exactly about that girl that got me? Was it her beauty? Was it her strength and stubbornness? Her hair? I tried to woo her with my Extremely Handsome and Attractive Manly smoulder but
it must have been a really off day for me. I instead got the frog and the frying pan...frying pans - Who knew? Right? I was intrigued by her insistence that there was something more. I was amazed that everywhere we went, she lit up the room. She was able to turn a bad situation into a good one with her spirit. Wherever she stood, she made it a holy place in her heart. I was increasingly more and more interested in her because of the light she had - all on her own. I mean even her hair glows! She came to my aid and defended me when I needed her most. How could she not fall in love with me? I mean me with her Take a few steps then turn back and say (By the way Don t tell her chamelieon.) Maximus (Katelyn C.) (Introduce yourself first and please throw your head and hair and act really tough at first. When you begin the sentence that includes the girl, soften your behaviour.) I am strong and loyal. I like to go where I want and I did not like that kid, that Flynn Rider, one bit. I was determined to stop this thief and throw him in jail where he belonged. I was set in my ways...until that girl, the one with the long beautiful hair and that distinctive voice, which calmed me down and made me second guess my motives. That girl had a soft calming way about her. When she told me to Sit, I could not help but listen to her. I mean come on, she told me I was such a good boy and that I was nothing but a big sweet heart of course I was going to listen to her. I trusted her actions, which were kind
to me. I grew to love her and even worked to help her in my own way. Even if I had to deal with that stupid Flynn Rider the whole way. I then came to realize that what she wanted and was working so hard for, enough to risk her life, must have been something real. Something I might want for myself. Kris wraps up I WAS TERRIFIED. I HAD BEEN LOOKING OUT MY WINDOW FOR 18 YEARS DREAMING ABOUT HOW I D FEEL WHEN I SAW THOSE LIGHTS IN THE SKY. WHEN I SAW THEM, WHEN I FELT THEM, I KNEW I HAD NOT MADE A MISTAKE GOING THERE. I SEE, IT IS ALL SO CLEAR WHERE I AM MEANT TO BE. THE LEADERS WHO TAKE US ON THIS JOURNEY HAVE SEEN THE JOY THAT THEY WANT TO SHARE WITH US THE JOY OF LIVING THE GOSPEL. I AM NOT SCARED ANYMORE, I TRUST THEM. I WANT MORE LIGHT, I WANT TO LIVE SO THAT I CAN GO TO THE TEMPLE, TO TRULY LIVE A GOOD LIFE. TO GET THERE, I NEED TO TRY AND FOLLOW THE GUIDELINES THAT WILL HELP ME : PARTICIPATING IN YOUNG WOMEN, WORKING ON MY PERSONAL PROGRESS, GOING TO ACTIVITIES AND LEARNING ALL THAT I CAN WHILE I AM YOUNG. ALL THOSE DAYS WATCHING FROM THE WINDOWS... All girls: (SING THE Theme SONG from Tangled with appropriate changes.) Laurels get Future Beehives from the audience, have them join the group - they all know the song... Please feel free to use these ideas - let us know how it went!
