John recognized Jesus as this savior, but as time passed he began to doubt. Jesus went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd went along with him. As he approached the town gate, a dead person was being carried out the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the town was with her. When the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, Don t cry. Then he went up and touched the coffin, and those carrying it stood still. He said, 6 7

At that very time Jesus cured many who had diseases, sicknesses and evil spirits, and gave sight to many who were blind. Hear the Bible Read this as a Group Background: God spoke to Peter in a vision telling him to abandon the Jewish food laws that had for centuries kept the Jews and Gentiles (non-jews) relationally and culturally separated. While Peter was still thinking about the vision, the Spirit said to him, Simon, three men are looking for you. So get up and go downstairs. Do not hesitate to go with them, for I have sent them. Peter went down and said to the men, I m the one you re looking for. Why have you come? The men replied, We have come from Cornelius the centurion. He is a righteous and God-fearing man, who is respected by all the Jewish people. A holy angel told him to have you come to his house so that he could hear what you have to say. Then Peter invited the men into the house to be his guests. The next day Peter started out with them, and some of the brothers from Joppa went along. The following day he arrived 10 11

But Peter made him get up. Stand up, he said, I am only a man myself. Talking with him, Peter went inside and found a large gathering of people. He said to them: You are well aware that it is against our law for a Jew to associate with a Gentile or visit him. But God has shown me that I should not call any man impure or unclean. So when I was sent for, I came without raising any objection. May I ask why you sent for me? Cornelius answered: Four days ago I was in my house praying at this hour, at three in the afternoon. Suddenly a man in shining clothes stood before me and said, Cornelius, God has heard your prayer and remembered your gifts to the poor. Send to Joppa for Simon who is called Peter. He is a guest in the home of Simon the tanner, who lives by the sea. So I sent for you immediately, and it was good of you to come. Now we are all here in the presence of God to listen to everything the Lord has commanded you to tell us. Then Peter began to speak: I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism but accepts men from every nation who fear him and do what is right. You know the message God sent to the people of Israel, telling the good news of peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all. You know what has happened throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him. We are witnesses of everything he did in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They killed him by hanging him on a tree, but God raised him from the dead on the third day and caused him to be seen. He was not seen by all the people, but by witnesses whom God had already chosen by us who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one whom God appointed as judge of the living and the dead. All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name. While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message. The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles. For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God. Then Peter said, Can anyone keep these people from being baptized with water? They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have. So he ordered that they be Talk about the Bible What it says 1. Paul and Barnabas appointed elders for them in each church and, with prayer and fasting, committed them to the Lord, in whom they had put their trust....from Attalia they sailed back to Antioch, where they had been committed to the grace of God for the work they had now completed. On arriving there, they gathered the church together and reported all that God had done through them and how he had opened the door of faith to the Gentiles. How to lead your I am Second group Go: local. Your community needs Jesus. Your community needs the love of Jesus that can end poverty and still violence but your community also needs his message of forgiveness. Jesus died to save the souls of broken people in a way that Jesus alone can offer. Go local is about you and your group bringing both the practical love of community service and the spiritual power of Jesus. Make Disciples. How do you disciple? You and your group will learn the basics of this as you go through this discussion guide, but here is a preview. Money is not Enough. Giving money is good, but it is not enough. God wants the stuff you cannot just give away. He wants your blood, sweat and tears. At times this will mean financial investment, but you cannot stop there. Get up, get involved, and change your community with your money and your hands. Go as a Group. One person can make a difference, but a group can do more. Work together. Serve together. Cheer each other on towards love and good works. Think Long-Term. Community service projects are good. But helping the hurting does not end when your project ends. Think long-term. How can your group work towards an ongoing long-term solution to your community s ailments? How does your project contribute to such long-term solutions? What can you do after your project is over to continue the work you begin? Live it. Jesus wants your life to be about service. This is about attitude. Are you a teacher because you want a paycheck or because you want to educate the nation s youth? Do you work construction for the money or because you want to provide housing for young families? Why do you do what you do? Make your life about serving others in everything you do. It is not about the job title, but about the work and attitude behind the title. 22 23

Some Help with the Discussion Have you talked about the main things? 1. What did you like? Jesus tells his followers to be his witnesses both locally and globally. This not only includes your friends and neighbors, but also the annoying, dirty, or angry people you meet along your way. 2. What did you not like or find confusing? What does it mean to be Jesus witness in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth? Think of it this way: Jerusalem is people near you, like you. Judea is people like you, further away. Samaria are those near you but are neglected or mistreated. Jesus gave this command while standing just outside the city of Jerusalem. This city served as the capitol of Judea which neighbored Samaria, a long time enemy of Judea. Jesus was telling his disciples to be a witness locally, which meant going to their city, region, and even neighboring enemies. But he also told them to go global, which meant everywhere else. You, too, have been called to go local and global with the message and love of Jesus. 3. What does this teach about people? Friend or foe. Near or far. Jesus wants his message spread to every person on the planet. He has given this task of spreading his message to people like you, people who claim to follow Jesus, people who put Jesus first and themselves Second. 4. What does this teach about God? Following Jesus is not merely a mental or spiritual exercise that happens at Sunday morning at church. It means going to the world and spreading his message to everyone you know or meet and even to those you do not know. Live and Tell I am Second groups are by nature action-oriented and others focused but even the best of groups can slip into patterns of inaction and selfishness. Use this time to discuss how your group is doing to fulfill its mission locally and globally. help the poor. share the good news. 8.2 Summary: Jesus raised a young man from the dead and brought hope to a grieving widow, but Jesus used this opportunity to do more than just heal the physical. He also brought spiritual healing. He showed people how to have a relationship with God. You, too, are called to help the poor and share the good news of Jesus. Jesus makes it clear that faith in him is what brings salvation. But this faith is the kind that feeds the hungry, clothes the naked, and welcomes the stranger. He does not want empty and lazy faith. He wants the kind of faith that helps the hurting and shares the good news with the lost. 2. What did you not like or find confusing? John was expecting the Savior of the world. When he saw Jesus he knew he had found that Savior, but as time passed and hard times worsened he began to lose hope. Jesus responded by describing his actions. He healed the sick and brought the good news to the poor. These are the signs of the Savior. And now he has called you to do the same. Help the needy. Spread the message of Jesus. 3. What does this teach about people? Feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, and healing the sick are good and, if you follow Jesus, they are essential. But Jesus wants more. If you address the physical and ignore the spiritual you leave people in an equally desperate situation. As you work towards being Jesus witness in your community, remember to always address the spiritual needs of people. 4. What does this teach about God? God cares about the poor and he cares about those who do not know him. People tend to focus on purely humanitarian or purely spiritual or evangelistic outreaches. But we need to keep the two mixed well, for that is what God calls his followers to do. Live and Tell What is God calling you and your group to do? He then sends Peter to Cornelius to whom he shares the message and hope of Jesus. God has a mission for you and your group as well. Some Help with the Discussion Have you talked about the main things? 1. What did you like? Peter heard God speak. He then obeyed God s call to go to a Gentile s home and share the message of Jesus. This went against everything his culture and his upbringing had taught him. He even reminded Cornelius that he was breaking his people s laws by associating with him. Despite all of this, Peter chose to obey God rather than tradition or culture. 2. What did you not like or find confusing? While Peter was sharing Jesus, Cornelius and the people with him began speaking in tongues and praising God. This is a confusing picture for many people and even Christians debate over what exactly it signifies. But what is sure is that God gave Cornelius and the people with him a supernatural sign that God was now with the Gentiles. Peter saw this sign and recommended that they be baptized to recognize that they were now part of God s family. 3. What does this teach about people? Peter and his fellow Jews struggled to see how God could allow the Gentiles into the family of God. But despite their hesitancy they saw God at work and chose to join him. Whether it is racial, economic, cultural, or just a personality clash, God wants nothing hindering his followers from reaching out and loving others. 4. What does this teach about God? God is sending your group to reach your community. Ask him where to go. Ask him how to go. Ask him for the strength and the guidance to go. Sometimes he will answer in a way so clear you cannot help but move. Other times he may answer through the counsel of a friend, an opportunity at work, or even the passions and interests of your group. Ask God to guide you as you decide where to go. go with a plan 8.4 Summary: Paul and Barnabas were in their church at Antioch when God spoke to them. The church prayed for them and sent them out to share the story of Jesus with the world. Paul and Barnabas went out, prayed, shared the message of Jesus, made disciples, gathered these new disciples into groups, developed leaders, and taught them how to multiply and teach others to do the same. How can your group use these principles to better witness in your community? Check-up: If your group has not taken any steps towards obedience, consider going back to the previous lesson. Paul and Barnabas did not just preach on the corner all day; they had a plan that started spiritual communities that multiplied. These were communities of people dedicated to following Jesus and helping others do the same. Paul and Barnabas started their journey with prayer. God is sending you and your group somewhere. How will you find out where? How can you use the principles that Paul and Barnabas used to multiply your group and reach your local community? Talk with God: The church at Antioch talked with God both before and after Paul and Barnabas were sent (13:1-3) Live and Tell: Paul and Barnabas shared the message of Jesus (13:32-33, 38-39). Make Disciples: They strengthened, encouraged, and discipled those who accepted the message of Jesus (14:21-23). Get Together: They gathered the new believers into spiritual communities (14:23). Develop Leaders: They appointed and trained new leaders (14:23). Multiply: Paul and Barnabas multiplied spiritual communities. 2. What did you not like or find confusing? The Holy Spirit directly spoke to the people at the Antioch church and told them to send Paul and Barnabas. God may not speak quite so directly to your group but he will give you direction. Jesus made it clear, Go and make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19). Ask God. Discuss with 28 29
what is the DNA of an I am Second group? I am Second s immediate appeal is aesthetic with its slick design, cool website, and inspiring films. But the real difference is more than skin deep. As you lead, keep in mind the heart behind I am Second s materials: Notes Stories and small. Encourage people to tell their story. Listen to the stories of others. Then discuss stories from the Bible. Keep your group small (between 2 and 8 people) to maximize impact and allow everyone to discuss these stories. Everyone learns. Help people learn how to do these things themselves: a) tell others about Jesus, b) study the Bible, c) pray, d) live in community, and e) endure hard times. They learn these things as they go through the I am Second curriculum. Consider everyone a potential leader. View everyone as a potential leader, both before and after they trust Christ. Give people opportunities to lead if they continue to obey and progress. Hand over leadership roles to different people each meeting. Obedience based, not just knowledge focused. Allow the Holy Spirit to guide people in the life changes they need to make as you do the Live and Tell questions. Then as you start the next session, ask each Second to share how they did with their Live and Tell commitments. Consider not moving on if people did not complete them. This creates an environment in which loving Jesus means obeying Jesus. New groups rather than big groups. As people share with others, encourage them not to invite the new people to your group, but instead start a new group. Encourage new leaders to stay in your existing group, which is a learning group for them. Their new group becomes their leading group. So they get on the job training, but stay connected for ongoing training and accountability. Discuss and discover. Focus on the Bible. Trust the Holy Spirit to help each person discover the meaning of Scripture as your group discusses it. Lead through asking questions rather than lecture. Help everyone participate. 30 31

In your I am Second group, forget big church models where a skilled musician leads worship and a highly trained teacher preaches a sermon. Teach new believers how to hear and respond to the leading of the Holy Spirit through His Word and in their hearts. Encourage everyone to take part. 5. Keep it biblical. They devoted themselves to the apostles teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. (Acts 2:42) When you come together, everyone has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. All of these must be done for the strengthening of the church. (1 Corinthians 14:26) Perhaps share a meal when you meet. Ask what the Lord has done in each person s life during the week. Make time to study God s Word. Discuss its meaning and specific applications. Don t answer questions yourself; point people back to Scripture. This helps to establish that the authority is God s Word, not a person.
