Sunday Readings Reflections 9/18/2016 Reading 1 Amos 8:4-7 The prophet Amos lived eight centuries before Christ, but the warning he issued against greed is still needed today. He calls on dishonest people who cheat others to take a good look at themselves. They are so focused on money that they cannot wait for the Sabbath or holy days to be over. They are not fair with the poor, even when it comes to selling them wheat for bread. But their greed is no secret from God. "Never will I forget a thing they have done!" God promises. Reading 2 1 Timothy 2:1-8 This reading from the first letter to Timothy was written at a time when Christians were trying to get along with the Roman government. Wisely, they are advised to pray for those who have power over them. They hope to avoid persecution so that they can live in peace. But they also hope for the conversion of their rulers to the Christian faith. Gospel Luke 16:1-13 or Luke 16: 10-13 Jesus warns his followers today against allowing money to become their master. They must use money in an intelligent and responsible way. But they must be ever alert to the ways in which concerns about money can take over their lives. Jesus advises them to prove themselves trustworthy in dealing with material wealth. Then they will be more trustworthy in spiritual matters as well. 2015 Sadlier Religion. All Rights Reserved. September 11, 2016 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3 Stewardship of Treasure Report September 3rd & 4th SYNOD 2017 People in our diocese are generous givers...we are called on to support our parishes, the work of the diocese, Catholic Charities, multiple collections, service organizations and countless other worthy causes. The appeals for money, volunteers and involvement can become overwhelming at times. Yet, I see that our people respond with great sacrifice and goodness. Without such support, the mission and work of the local Church could not continue. Bishop Donald J. Hying on stewardship Add your voice to the process. Sign up today (sign -up sheets are in main vestibule) for our parish discussion session on Monday, October 3, 2016 from 6:00-9:00pm. RECONCILIATION True reconciliation is emotional, dramatic, and cleansing. When two people meet heart to heart and work through old hurts, misunderstandings, and careless words, cleansing tears often flow and the encounter ends with an embrace that fills both with the warmth of a love too strong to fade. The readings this weekend assure us of this healthy release that comes with reconciliation. They give us the courage to reach out to someone with whom we need to reconcile ourselves, and give us the courage to ask for forgiveness from God, too. In the reading from Exodus, we see how God refuses again and again to give up on the Israelites. Even though they grow impatient with God and turn to false idols, God still calls them back. Luke's Gospel assures us that God rejoices when we turn away from sin. Paul's letter to Timothy encourages us, like Paul, to look back on our lives and recognize where God's patient mercy has been shown to us. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.
