These are also available for download from the synod website: http://scsw-elca.org/campus_ministry.aspx Book Discussion: "The New Jim Crow" Remaining Dates: October 9 & 30 at Lake Edge (Madison) The Lake Edge Lutheran Church Racial Justice Coalition invites you to a book discussion of The New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander, an account of a system in the United States that resulted in the incarceration of millions of African Americans and relegated them to a permanent, second-class status denying them the very rights that were won through the Civil Rights Movement. The three discussion sessions will take place Sundays from 9:30 AM to 10:15 AM. Session 1 on September 18 will be led by Pastor Stephen Marsh. YOUNG ADULT IN GLOBAL MISSION, LAURA HERMANNS WOULD LIKE TO SPEAK TO YOUR CONGREGATION! Hear about God s work being done in Rwanda and 12 other countries through the ELCA s Young Adults in Global Mission Program. A leadership development program for young adults, YAGM volunteers walk alongside global partners in a model of solidarity and accompaniment during a year of service and growth. I would love to share my personal experiences as a young adult missionary and talk about how you can become or support a YAGM volunteer! In keeping with the importance of attending these workshops and based on best practices, the synod keeps a record of attendance and non-attendance in each rostered leader s file. If you attended a boundaries workshop within the last three years, you should have a copy of an attendance certificate in your file as all rostered received these at our last workshop and the WCC provides these as well. If you need to attend one, the WCC is offering three locations and dates. Fundraiser for Lakeview s Kitchen Remodel Mark your calendars for September 24 th for a piano concert by music director Lynn Najem in the Lakeview Lutheran Church Sanctuary. The event begins at 3:30 and Lynn will perform a variety of music on the grand piano, including show tunes and jazz. Light refreshments will follow the concert at 4:15. Consider staying for worship at 5pm. Invite a friend! This is a fundraiser for the kitchen and a suggested donation of $20 per person is requested. diakonia South Central Synod of Wisconsin - Fall 2016 Diakonia Course Open for Registration While the New Testament Class has started with a record number of students, you can still apply to start Diakonia at any time. The next class Christian Doctrine starts October 15. If you want to take a class, simply send in the $25.00 registration fee and pay for the class at the first class. Most students enrolled in the Diakonia program reflect that attending the course with a friend or two provides for a richer experience as you can return to your congregations for further conversation and sharing on the rides to and from class! Diakonia classes are accessible for anyone in your congregation that wishes to dive a little deeper than bible studies typically allow. Open to all! Frequently Asked Questions: How much does diakonia cost? Tuition: $60 per course. Books: Actual costs vary from course to course, but average $25-30 per class. Fees: A non-refundable Registration Fee of $25 is required of first-time students. Students who complete all 12 courses of the program and choose to participate in a graduation ceremony will be asked to pay a $25 fee to cover graduation expenses, including the presentation of a commemorative diakonia cross. Financial Aid: Financial aid for tuition (not books) is available: congregations are encouraged to help with the cost of the program. It is our goal to turn no one away due to financial need. Fair Labor Standards Act Rules Join the Experts to Learn What This Means for Your Congregation October 18 Join Steve Knowles (synod attorney for the Greater Milwaukee Synod) and Tom Cunniff, Associate General Counsel of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America for a webinar on the new FLSA rules on October 18, at noon (central). The registration for the webinar is now live and can be found here: https://community.elca.org/flsawebinar Participate from your seat, not by your feet easy way to learn without having to travel anywhere and because these rules are important to good stewardship of your human resources, you should put this date on your calendar! Together we have resettled 103 "new friends" in our neighborhoods since Oct. 1, 2015. You will journey from Berlin to Frankfurt, with stops in Wittenberg, Eisleben, Leipzig, Erfurt, Eisenach, Rhine River and Worms, and finally Heidelberg.
