FROM THE PASTOR'S DESK Every organization has some sort of initiation which makes the new member a part of the group, with all the rights and duties of belonging to that group. Initiations are something very special. Today we celebrate the Baptism of the Lord. It was His initiation into His public ministry- His preaching, teaching and saving us. What does that mean? By being baptized, Our Lord acknowledged His complete unity with the human race. He was, of course, already God's Son. But at His baptism, the Father publicly acknowledged Him as His Son, with Whom He was well pleased, and publicly invested Him with His mission on earth. The baptism we all received, either as children or as adults, is greater than the baptism given by St. John. But the meaning is the same: by our baptism into Christ, we accepted a share in His mission in the world. God publicly acknowledged us His children, and He is well pleased with us. It is a very dramatic mission we have assumed by our baptism, but it is accomplished in very un-dramatic ways. Such un-dramatic things as honesty in business, integrity in speech, patience in time of trial, studying our Catholic faith to better understand, live and share it, concern for the poor and human life in all its stages - these are all means by which we carry out our mission. It seems easier to do something dramatic, but that is not the way of Jesus. It is the day-by-day living out of the faith we received in our baptism that can convert our amilies and the world. LUMINARIES FOR LIFE On the eve of the 43 rd annual March for Life, let us remember the precious lives lost from abortion. To do this, the Respect Life group will be selling luminaries after all of the weekend Masses this weekend and next weekend, January 16-17. We will provide 10 bags and 10 (4 hour) candles for the parish to line the street outside of your home on Thursday evening, January 21. The suggested donation is $5 and proceeds will benefit various pro-life organizations in the area. Rain date for displaying the luminaries will be Friday evening, January 22. For any questions, please call Phyllis Heppard at 610-306-9324. HC0243
