Tidewater Emmaus January 2014 Volume 26 Issue 1 2014 Board Members I Am Clark Cundiff Lisa Nordan Karla Barron Alan Peterson Clif Boyce Amy Coxwell Joyce Thompson Leo Matuszak Rhonda Huff Donnie Gray Robert Smith Andrew Barron Cheryl Best Lynn Hollandsworth Robert Coxwell Contact Us: Tidewater Emmaus P. O. Box 61485 Virginia Beach, VA 23466-1485 www.tidewateremmaus.org Find us and like us on Facebook Community Lay Director Corner I want to introduce myself to you all. My name is Karla Barron, I walked Tidewater 85, I attend Community United Methodist Church, and I sat at the table of the Ruthettes; (clap now). I am completely humbled to have been selected by the amazing members of the 2013 board. This board has been a warm and wonderful place to serve these past two years. I have enjoyed every meeting, every prayer and every moment of fellowship with all that have served with me. I am excited to approach 2014 alongside the members of the 2014 board, as each is a servant of our Lord in the purest sense of the word; each person is so incredibly willing to serve in whatever capacity is needed and devoted to this community. I must tell you that from about Saturday during my walk, when I walked into Farm Fresh and laid eyes on the most wonderful sight, I fell in love with this Community. You are all my family and with that I ask that during this year, you keep the entire board in your prayers. About me I have an amazing husband named Andy, who is a 17 year Navy man; we have survived a 2 yr unaccompanied tour and are coming to end of that time thankfully. I have three children, a son (Jonny) who is 21 and in his second year in the Navy. Jonny is currently on deployment on board the USS Truman in the Med. I have two daughters, Taylor and Karlyn. Taylor is 19 and in her second year of college, pursuing a nursing degree. Karlyn is 13 and an 8 th grade student, cheerleader, gymnast, and year round swimmer. I am a Special Education Assistant at a Va Beach High School and entered a Master s Degree program this month at Regent University. I am also a member of the Praise Band at CUMC and an adult member of the Student Council at CUMC. I am excited about this coming year and pray that as a board we are able to void ourselves of self and approach each meeting and every decision we are faced with making, first with prayer and with the guidance of our Lord.

There is so much I want to say about the coming walks and this months flight, but I will let the Board members in those roles share that information with you. I look forward to seeing you all at gatherings. In His Service and With His Guidance, DeColores, Karla Barron, TW85 TWE Community Lay Director Email: twecld@yahoo.com Head Spiritual Director: Clark Cundiff I am Clark Dennis Cundiff and I currently am privileged to serve as the Head Spiritual Director of the Tidewater Emmaus Community. I walked on TW 90 and sat at the table of God s Crew and I am currently the pastor at Nimmo United Methodist Church in Virginia Beach, Virginia. I grew up in Carrollton, Virginia, and attended Benn s United Methodist Church in Smithfield. I have an older sister and two younger brothers who continue to live in the Carrollton area. I graduated from Smithfield High School and went on to graduate from the University of Virginia with a degree in English. I am married to Amy Townsend and we live in the Virginia Beach area. During my walk I experienced the incredible feeling of unconditional love. The experience of candlelight showed me how awesome unconditional love can be and feel. Feeling the joy and love gave me a glimpse of heaven on earth. I came away with a renewed sense of being in service and a renewed sense of vocational calling to continue to be an instrument for God to use in any way that God wills. My Emmaus experience helps me to stay connected to my source: God, and to stay in touch with God's will for my life. One of my responsibilities as Head Spiritual Director for the Tidewater Emmaus Community is to provide five clergy for each of the four Walks and one Chrysalis Flight. My goal is to only ask a pastor to serve once during a year. In order to accomplish this we need to increase the number of pastors that have walked and might consider serving as a spiritual director for a walk. Please consider talking to your pastor about the opportunity to participate in the Walk To Emmaus. Once they have walked then you or I may enter into a conversation with them to consider teaming. My goal is for all of the pastors who have had members of their church walk at least participate in the three-day Walk To Emmaus. I would be happy to talk to your pastor with you or directly if you feel that would help them consider participating. Please call me at 757-615-0732 mobile or email me at pastor@nimmochurch.org if I can be of assistance in any way. De Colores! Pastor Clark TW 90

From the Director of Sponsorship: Alan Peterson We ve all just come through the Christmas Season, and as Christians we understand the amazing gift that was given to us in the form of a little baby named Jesus. He changed the world, and continues to keep on changing the world. Today we have an opportunity to experience another amazing gift one a little closer to home. A member of our Tidewater Emmaus Community has decided to pay for the sponsorship fees for TW104. Yes you read that right sponsorship fees for TW104 are being covered by an amazing gift. Here are the details Any Pilgrim sponsored on TW104 will still have to fill out an application and write that personal check for $55.00. You as a sponsor will have to fill out your part of the application and mail it in. What you as a sponsor will not have to do is include your check for $195.00. We have the capacity to host 42 Pilgrims for the Walk. This gift giver will cover the fees for all 42 Pilgrims if we can find enough Pilgrims to fill up the Walk. So my friends if you ever thought you wanted to sponsor someone, but wondered how you d be able to pay for it now is the time to get busy. If you have any questions you can always call me, Alan Peterson. I m the sponsorship person on the board for 2014, and I ll be happy to walk you through the process. You can reach me at 757-375-3420. Think about it if we have a full Walk of 42 men, the effect that will have on the ministry of Tidewater Emmaus is exciting to consider. This is indeed another gift that will keep on giving. De Colores! Alan Peterson TW-28 Email: twesponsorship@yahoo.com From the Director of Gatherings: Lynn Hollandsworth Hi! My name is Lynn Hollandsworth, I attend Charity United Methodist Church, I walked on Tidewater 71, and I sat at the table of Esther, the beautiful Queen. My job this year on the board is to coordinate the monthly Gatherings. Gatherings are an important part of our Fourth Day as it provides an opportunity for our Emmaus Community to join together and spend time praising our Lord through word and song, keep up to date on the events and business of our community, and to support our speaking as they share with us their Fourth Day journey. The Gathering for January will be held at 7:30PM on SUNDAY, JANUARY 19 th at Triple R Ranch in Chesapeake. The Chrysalis flights for both the boys and girls are being held at Triple R that weekend and the Gathering will take place prior to Candlelight for both flights. Those are both FULL FLIGHTS (Thank you, God!) so let s all come out to Triple R to show support for each of those caterpillars. Just a reminder: There is no potluck supper prior to the Gathering. Lynn Hollandsworth James 2:14-17 Email: twegatherings@yahoo.com

From the Director of Registration: Clif Boyce Happy New Year Tidewater Emmaus! My name is Clif Boyce; I attend Beach Fellowship, walked on TW 88, and sat at the table of Lost and Found. (You can clap here) For those of you that don t know me I m originally from Orlando, Fl and growing up thought that was the only place for me, that is, until I ran into a Navy recruiter. Through the Navy I ve been able to see the world and even met I met my wife Char in the process. The good Lord has sure blessed me with an incredible woman because Char has endured numerous duty station moves, 13 SSBN submarine patrols, 2 SSN deployments and 5 surface ship deployments. Throughout it all I know she truly had the toughest job as she kept everything together during my many times away. In April of 2011 I retired from the Navy after 28 ½ years and now am a government contractor where I help train crews in the operation and maintenance of their combat systems. In June, Char and I will be celebrating our 29 th anniversary and she continues to amaze me as a wife and a mother. I recently heard someone say that we never know what the next year will bring. How true! Last year Char and I found ourselves back in the parenting role as we raise our 19 month old grandson Kingston; let me tell you he is the absolute joy of our lives. Just ask me, or spend 5 minutes with me and I m sure I ll start telling you how amazing he is and YES I have LOTS of pictures. Proverbs 3:5,6 are my life scripture verses and were instrumental in bringing me into a REAL relationship with God. They are part of my testimony. This year I am honored to be serving as the Director of Registration and am excited to have the opportunity to work directly with the 2014 Pilgrims as we work through the process of confirming them for the upcoming walks. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions concerning the registration of your Pilgrims. Be blessed! De Colores, Clif Boyce TW 88 Cell 287-5855 Email: tweregistration@yahoo.com From the Director of Agape: Rhonda Huff My name is Rhonda Huff and I will be the Agape Director for the Tidewater Community. This is my second year as a board member. I walk on TW10 in November 1990. I have been active at St.Andrew s U.M.C in Virginia Beach for 33 years. I sat at the Table of Kindness. I am married and have two children; I also have one granddaughter who is almost two years old. I work in the Finance Dept. for Dollar Tree at the corporate office in Chesapeake, Va. Rhonda Huff Email: tweagape1@yahoo.com

From the Director of Finance: Joyce Thompson Hello, my name is Joyce Thompson, I walked on TW-54 and sat at the table of God s Green Gardner s and I have the honor to serve on the Tidewater Emmaus Board as your Treasurer this year. What exactly does your treasurer do? My job is to handle all the financial obligations for our Community. I do what everyone does for your personal finances, i.e. balance the check book, pay the bills, the one thing I do that most of us don t do is present a monthly report to the Board showing what we received and how the funds were used. If you are new to the community you may not know that we are a 501c (3) Non-Profit organization. We take up an offering at each gathering (cash and checks payable to Tidewater Emmaus are welcome) to cover our month to month expenses. 50% of the offering each month goes to the Tidewater Chrysalis. You can also donate from the website through Just Give. These donations can be a onetime gift or set up as a recurring donation. Walk expenses are covered from the fees we collect for the pilgrims and teamers. It costs $13,000 to $15,000 for each walk, depending on the number of pilgrims. We are required by Wakefield to make a 50% deposit to them 60 days prior to the walk start date; this is why we now require submission of all fees up front. I know this is a lot of information at once so I will stop here for now and bring you a bit more each month about the business side of all the fun we have with the Tidewater Emmaus. If you have any questions please let me know. As I said in the beginning it is an honor to serve on the Tidewater Emmaus Board. De Colores!! Just give button on our website! Joyce Thompson, Director of Finance Email: twefinance@yahoo.com From the Director of Team Selection: Robert Smith Thank you Tidewater Emmaus Community for responding!! We have received more than enough applications for the men s team. We could still use a few for the women s team especially someone to lead music and folks that have teamed between one and three times. If you would like to submit an application, please send it by email to Robert Smith. Please use the subject line: Spring Teaming Applications. If you forgot to send in your application or if you are feeling led to serve the upcoming walks, please don t delay! We need your application today! Peace, Robert Smith TW-64 Director of Team Selection, Tidewater Emmaus Email: tweteamselect@yahoo.com
