SOUND REASONS WHY WE SING TO THE LORD Introduction Adapted from Maranatha Messenger, Sunday 26th June 2016 Deuteronomy 31:19, Now therefore write ye this song for you, and teach it the children of Israel: put it in their mouths, that this song may be a witness for me against the children of Israel. In the wee hours of the morning in the home of the Roberts in Inverness, Scotland (during our sabbatical) on 20 May 2016, this was written to edify and exhort one another in the Lord on the subject of biblical singing to the Lord. Here are some good reasons why believers should sing joyfully to the glory of God : 1. When we sing to God, we praise and glorify God and in fruitful sacrifices as observe His Holy Word. God has given us certain commands and here is one of them given in Colossians 3:16. The call to believers to sing is not a suggestion but an order from our God. Paul says in Colossians 3:16, "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God" and Hebrews 13:15, By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name. God's people are privileged to be summoned to sing and it is rightly called a sacrifice of praise that comes from the fruit of our lips to God. We are commanded to sing and what an honour it is to sing before the King of kings. Remember that when we sing during family worship or at home, we are fulfilling the will of God in us. 2. When we sing to the Lord from our hearts, with meditation of the words, we derive a deeper understanding of the Word of God. Paul states here that we are to let God's Word dwell in us richly and that comes about where we read and understand the lyrics and mean what we sing. Not the superficial ditties of our times but the profound and sound lyrics of the psalms and God honouring and time tested theologically sound hymns of the past from Isaac Watts, William Cowper (and we visited his museum), James Montgomery, Charles Wesley, Augustus Toplady and others. Singing and reading of the word are God-ordained ways whereby we deepen ourselves in the knowledge of the Word of God and it then will dwell in our hearts and change us by His will. As we sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs together, note that amazingly, the inspired Word of Christ inhabits or dwells in our minds richly. It can have a profound effect on our thoughts, behaviour and actions as well. Our singing is precious and it has a special purpose in the family devotions and the worship service. Both Ephesians 5:29 and Colossians 3:16 support that : Singing and preaching are effective avenues which God has ordained for us in His inerrant and sufficient Word to dwell richly in our hearts. Store up sound words in your mind to be used at the right time when needed. Try to also meditate and memorize the words when we sing, as some are derived from the truths of scripture. You can get sound theology of the cross of Jesus Christ when you sing Come Thou Fount, God of Abraham Praise, And Can It Be or The Old Rugged Cross with rich and relevant applications for our daily walk in life. - 2 -

3. When you sing, you can edify and exhort and admonish yourself and others too in the fear and knowledge of God. You can edify or build up yourself and other believers too when you sing in a God-honouring manner. It is a great blessing to hear the word of life in our ears. Note Ephesians 5:19 which says, " Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; Note that In Col 3:13-16, the call to sing comes also with forgiving one another putting on love, being at peace as one united body of Christ and teaching God's Word corporately in an effective manner. Let us resolve to do what the Bible says and let us learn to sing melodiously together as a church or a covenant family, also knowing that as you sing, you can be reaching out to unbelievers with the gospel of salvation. God calls us to be a light unto the nations, and to sing to Him, with praises and tell of all his wondrous works! (Psalm 105). Think of the spiritual effects on someone who may not know Christ when he or she hears the words of truth and life as we sing together! Worship can be evangelistic when we sing and preach the pure gospel and the Word and expound the themes of everlasting life through Christ alone. 4. Singing is also a form of spiritual conflict (Ephesians 6:11-18, 2 Chronicle 20:21-26). Jehoshaphat led an army of choir members to sing to victory and the Lord confused the enemies who killed one another. It was said that Oliver Cromwell's army was a singing band of fit, brave and well equipped men fighting to victory. We see in Ephesians 5, the command to sing is also connected to redeeming the time, for the days are evil (Ephesians 5:16). The Christian is to use his or her time wisely and we can pray and read the word and sing. What actions is most feared or hated by the evil one than the posture of a believer who is singing or praying to the Lord? May our voices be lifted to heaven in song and Satan will flee from us when we resist him with the Word and prayer! (James 4:7-8). Singing with a heart unto God will keep and deliver us from diabolical temptations too as our mind are focused on Christ and the opposite is also true. A singing heart to the Lord can undermine the work of the devil and can break the bondage of sin when we confess and repent of it after being convicted by the words of the psalms and hymns. Many times we have been rebuked by hymns when we sang them and often have been brought under conviction of sin and we sought the Lord for pardon and forgiveness. - 3 -

5. When we sing, we are spiritually strengthened for testings and tribulations by the Lord and it can also be a testimony to others. Singing can bring about spiritual strength for trial as in the example of Acts 16. Paul and Silas were unjustly imprisoned and they sang unto the Lord and later were set free by the power of God (Acts 16:25). We have visited various countries and this truth of victory in trials is confirmed in the lives of persecuted believers in country X and Y and elsewhere. Read Acts 16 and learn about what Paul and Silas did when they were imprisoned. Singing strengthens you and helps you persevere in the face of trial. It can also strengthen us in the face of these trials and testings when we turn to God in worship. Angie and I were once trapped in a cable car in West Virginia and we prayed and sung until it moved again in 15-20 minutes though we were afraid at times. Singing calms our anxious souls and helped us to fully trust and rest in Him alone (Psalm 37:3-7). Whether in good or bad times, do not just stand there, SING something (psalms or hymns) unto the Lord and make a joyful noise unto the Lord! It will be blessing to all around us to behold and hear those glorious words of praise to God as the angels of old who sang when we our Lord Jesus was born. 6. When we sing to the Lord, it is a God-honouring avenue to joy, comfort and Godly consolation. Moses led in a song of victory in Exodus 15 where they triumphed over their foes and crossed the Red Sea.Deborah sang joyfully when Barak won the battel with her help to glorify God (Judges 5). The vigil services and the funeral hymn can be a balm of Gilead to the bereaved family when we sing "Sweet By And By" or "O Think Of The Home Over There" or "O God Our Help In Ages Past" and what a comfort to the grieving soul. Consider singing to the sick and afflicted too Consider what the Psalmist say about the spiritual benefits of singing to the Lord in Psalms 5:11, singing for refuge and protection in God. Psalms 51:14, sing aloud of God's righteousness and he will deliver us. Psalms 59:16, singing builds a fortress and a refuge in the day of our distress and Psalms 63:7 "Singing brings divine help. James 5:13 exhorts us, "1. Is any merry? let him sing psalms (or praises to God). That is the expression of a happy soul and the cure for an unhappy one. Hearty singing brings much lasting joy and vice versa. A joyous spirit and singing both go together. These two biblical themes are needful for a healthy Christian life. If you are joyful - Praise God for His creation and handiwork and the salvation of His covenant people and learn to tell it in a musical way to the world. Dr John Sung the great revivalist would preach and stop and then burst forth into singing and then preach again, then sing again and what a spiritual revival it was in the 1930s to awaken many slumbering souls unto the Lord in Singapore, Malaysia, China and beyond as many were convicted and converted under the influence of the Spirit. It is important that the triune God be the only object of our praise and not an organization, man nor self. Ephesians 5:19, "1. singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord." It is to Him and about the glorious beauty of Christ and His wondrous work that we sing! Bring your heart, soul and mind to focus entirely and completely on God. In an age of mass distractions with internet TV and handphones games - singing to the Lord should garner the attention of all our senses and focus us on God alone and not be enthralled by the seductive world around us. - 4 -

In Revelation 4:10-11; 5:9, 7:9-10, the Apostle John gives us a glimpse of heavenly eternity with redeemed people singing before the Lamb of God and every Sabbath is an emblem of eternal rest as the hymn writer says. One day, when the Lord shall come, we will be singing forever to the praise and adoration of our great God and what a grand prerogative it will be for us! Conclusion Pray that you and your family will know the Lord and will be there too with the redeemed multitude, singing the new and glorious uplifting songs of the Lamb, to our great God and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Let us prayerfully resolve to seek Christ and sing reverently with our hearts unto the Lord now as a church or family and forevermore. Let us all do what Moses did in Deuteronomy 31:22. Moses therefore wrote this song the same day, and taught it to the children of Israel (and let us teach our children as well to sing the songs of Zion and the glorious hymns of everlasting life). Let us seek the Almighty God from the depths of our souls in both temporal or eternal singing for singing matters for our spiritual health and our everlasting benefit and to the glory of God who is worthy of all our praise and adoration. Rev Jack Sin ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Apostle s Creed I believe in God the Father, Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ, His only begotten Son, our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary; Suffered under Pontius Pilate; was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; The third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; From thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost. the holy catholic* church; the communion of saints; The forgiveness of sins; The resurrection of the body; And the life everlasting. Amen. *meaning the universal Christian church--all believers in Jesus Christ - 5 -

Comments: To redeem is to buy back something which has been possessed before, but of which possession has been lost. New, Jesus Christ redeemed us with his own blood. And of this Redeemer we are here told that, being God, he became man; so that the two natures in him remain henceforth and for ever united in one person. Jesus Christ, we must remember therefore, is not something between God and man, but both God and man.
