Create in Me A Clean Heart Oh God, and Renew a Right Spirit Within Me- Psalm 51 14 th Sunday After Pentecost September 1 & 2, 2012 1

Ebenezer Lutheran Church Port Hudson The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod 9100 Highway YY Leslie, Missouri Parsonage 573-459-6432 Church 573-459-6431 Rev. William F. Zastrow, Pastor Mary Sprick, Secretary ebenezerlutheran@hotmail.com ebenezerlutheranchurch.wordpress.com 14 th Sunday after Pentecost When Sin Is under Your Skin AS WE GATHER: We are capable of outward religious appearances, but without God's help, sin continues to lurk within. But God Almighty has come to our aid! To His Old Testament people He revealed His statutes and covenants--- righteous declarations that stunned other nations. And now in these days, God, the Holy Spirit has bestowed on us a veritable suit of armor to withstand spiritual attacks from the devil, the world, and our sinful flesh. God, the Lord confounds all evil and sin, by giving Himself into death for us so that we might live for Him temporally and eternally. By His grace we are able to look in the mirror---blessed and forgiven by grace---even when sin is under our skin. PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP: We give thanks, almighty God, that in our worship of Word and Sacrament You will assure us that You alone cleanse us from our sin within. Strengthen us thereby that we may show forth our faith throughout this week in words and actions through Your Son, 2

Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. INVOCATION and OPENING SENTENCES Pastor: In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. People: Amen. Pastor: Jesus speaks good news to us in today's Gospel: "There is nothing outside a person that by going into him can defile him" (Mark 7:15a). But He continues with a condemning word of Law, "but the things that come out of a person are what defile him" (Mark 7:15b). We cannot face almighty God today with the sins that come from within; they produce the sinful thoughts, words, and deeds for which He would be justified in excluding us from His presence. Yet, because - as St. Paul writes in the Epistle - our gracious heavenly Father has given us "the shield of faith" and "the sword of the Spirit," (Ephesians 6:16,17) we can confidently go to God in Christ's name, seeking and imploring His grace for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ. (Silence for reflection on God's Word and for self-examination.) CONFESSION Pastor: Gracious, heavenly Father, 3

People: I confess to You and to these, my brothers and sisters, that I have sinned with my evil thoughts, words, and deeds. I am defiled by them and helpless to stop them without Your aid. They are so much a part of my life that I am not even aware of them all. For Jesus' sake, forgive me. Hear me as I echo the psalmist's plea: INTROIT Psalm 51:7, 10-12; antiphon: v.2 Pastor: Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, People: and cleanse me from my sin! Pastor: Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; People: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Pastor: Create in me a clean heart, O God, People: and renew a right spirit within me. Pastor: Cast me not away from Your presence, People: and take not Your Holy Spirit from me. Pastor: Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, People: and uphold me with a willing spirit. All: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin! 4

ABSOLUTION Pastor: Through Baptism the Holy Spirit has washed away all our sins. Our heavenly Father looks at us through the all-atoning blood of His Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. He promises grace and every blessing. As a called and ordained servant of Christ and by His authority I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. People: Amen. + SERVICE OF THE WORD + SONG OF PRAISE "O Jesus, King Most Wonderful" LW 274 COLLECT OF THE DAY Pastor: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Pastor: Let us pray. O God, the source of all that is just and good, People: nourish in us every virtue and bring to completion every good intent that we may grow in grace and bring forth the fruit of good works, Pastor: through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. People: Amen. 5

OLD TESTAMENT Deuteronomy 4:1-2, 6-9 (God's Law shows His care for His people, who dare not forget His righteous statutes and rules.) Pastor: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. HYMN "Oh, That the Lord Would Guide My Ways" LW 392 Oh, that the Lord would guide my ways To keep his statutes still! Oh, that my God would grant me grace To know and do his will! Order my footsteps by your Word And make my heart sincere; Let sin have no dominion, Lord, But keep my conscience clear. Assist my soul, too apt to stray, A stricter watch to keep; If ever I for get your way, Restore your wandering sheep. Make me to walk in your commands, A most delightful road; Nor let my head or heart or hands Offend against my God. EPISTLE Ephesians 6:10-20 (God provides all the spiritual armor we need to withstand assaults from all sides.) 6

Pastor: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. ALLELUIA and VERSE Mark 5:8 Pastor: Alleluia. Blessed are the pure in heart, People: for they shall see God. Alleluia. HOLY GOSPEL Mark 7:14-23 (The sin under our skin is the source of evil thoughts, words, and deeds.) Pastor: The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the seventh chapter. People: Glory to You, O Lord. (The Gospel is read.) Pastor: This is the Gospel of the Lord. People: Praise to You, O Christ. The Nicene Creed All: I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, 7

God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life + of the world to come. Amen. 8

LABOR DAY PRAYER Lord on this Labor Day, we celebrate the work we do, and we thank You for the blessing of our jobs. We ask for those seeking employment that You guide them in their search for work. We ask for guidance when we are confused. We ask for patience when working through conflicts. We ask for strength to complete each day. We ask for rest when we are weary. We ask that You be with those whose faces we might never see but who work tirelessly each day for the good of us all. 'Lord, support us all day long until shadows lengthen, evening comes, the busy world hushed, the fever of life is over and our life's work is done. Then, in Thy tender mercy, give us safe lodging, holy rest and everlasting peace at your side for eternity.' Amen 15
