Loving God Nurturing Family Thinking Critically Practicing Fellowship Bethesda s Core Values Loving our Neighbor Serving the Community Supporting Personal Ministry Practicing Stewardship Second Sunday in Lent 2015 Ask & Inform Sunday Thinking Critically March 1, 2015 We welcome children from the youngest ages to enjoy church with their families, and we re pleased to have you worship with us this morning. For those who prefer, we do offer a child care ministry at all of our Sunday services for children up to three years of age. You are welcome to take your child to our nursery at any point during the service just ask an usher to point the way. In case of an emergency Bethesda has two AEDs (Automated External Defibrillator) available in the sound booth at the back of the church and on the south wall in the Parish Hall. Please turn off your cell phones. Page numbers refer to The Book of Common Prayer (red). Hymn numbers refer to The Hymnal 1982 (blue). Busy Bags for little children are available at the main entrance or from an usher. A large-print version of this leaflet is available from our ushers. Seasonal Liturgical Rotation for Lent There are no flowers in the Sanctuary. A Lenten Array is used for altar frontal panels, clergy stoles, and hangings on the Lectern and Pulpit; the crosses are veiled; the choirs, acolytes, and lay ministers wear black cassocks. Silver communion vessels and alms basins, as well as brass candlesticks, are replaced with wood, ceramic, and glass items. We neither sing nor speak alleluia throughout Lent. The service usually begins with the Lenten Acclamation; twice during Lent we will sing The Great Litany in procession. The Gloria in excelsis and Te Deum are not used again until Easter. We kneel for the Eucharistic Prayer. We use the second translation of the Lord s Prayer. The Fraction Anthem rotates from Christ Our Passover to Agnus Dei. The Blessing is replaced by a Solemn Prayer over the People (from The Book of Occasional Services). The final hymn is sung in place and followed by the Procession. There is no Postlude. For more information about our Lenten Worship, read Father James essay, available in the Narthex. 8:00 a.m. service page 2 9:00 a.m. service page 3 11:00 a.m. service page 3

Amen. The congregation is seated. Lesson Genesis 17:1 7, 15 16 When Abram was ninety nine years old, the Lord appeared to Abram, and said to him, I am God Almighty; walk before me, and be blameless. And I will make my covenant between me and you, and will make you exceedingly numerous. Then Abram fell on his face; and God said to him, As for me, this is my covenant with you: You shall be the ancestor of a multitude of nations. No longer shall your name be Abram, but your name shall be Abraham; for I have made you the ancestor of a multitude of nations. I will make you exceedingly fruitful; and I will make nations of you, and kings shall come from you. I will establish my covenant between me and you, and your offspring after you throughout their generations, for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your offspring after you. God said to Abraham, As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her Sarai, but Sarah shall be her name. I will bless her, and moreover I will give you a son by her. I will bless her, and she shall give rise to nations; kings of peoples shall come from her. Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. Psalm and Epistle at 11:00 a.m. service only Psalm 22:22 30 (Leaflet, page 2) Peter Hallock The congregation, remaining seated, joins in singing the antiphon before the Psalm and each time the introduction is played. Epistle Romans 4:13 25 The promise that he would inherit the world did not come to Abraham or to his descendants through the law but through the righteousness of faith. If it is the adherents of the law who are to be the heirs, faith is null and the promise is void. For the law brings - 5 -

wrath; but where there is no law, neither is there violation. For this reason it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his descendants, not only to the adherents of the law but also to those who share the faith of Abraham (for he is the father of all of us, as it is written, I have made you the father of many nations ) in the presence of the God in whom he believed, who gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist. Hoping against hope, he believed that he would become the father of many nations, according to what was said, So numerous shall your descendants be. He did not weaken in faith when he considered his own body, which was already as good as dead (for he was about a hundred years old), or when he considered the barrenness of Sarah s womb. No distrust made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, being fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised. Therefore his faith was reckoned to him as righteousness. Now the words, it was reckoned to him, were written not for his sake alone, but for ours also. It will be reckoned to us who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead, who was handed over to death for our trespasses and was raised for our justification. Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. The Gospel Procession The congregation stands as the hymn is introduced. Hymn 489 The Great Creator of the Worlds Tallis Ordinal Gospel Mark 8:31 38 Deacon The Holy Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. People Glory to you, Lord Christ. Then Jesus began to teach his disciples that the Son of Man must undergo great suffering, and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. He said all this quite openly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. But turning and looking at his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, Get behind me, Satan! For you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things. He called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it. For what will it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their life? Indeed, what can they give in return for their life? Those who are ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of them the Son of Man will also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels. Deacon The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ. Homily The Rector A brief period of silence follows the Homily. - 6 -

Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. The Peace People The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. During the Peace at the 9:00 a.m. service, the children will enter the church. Greeting and Announcements The Rector If you didn t receive our e-mail newsletter with our upcoming events, please pick up the Bethesda Happenings located in the Narthex, in our tract rack, and on our website. The Holy Communion Offertory Members of the congregation will present the offerings and oblations of our life and labor to the Lord. See page 12 for more information. Offertory Anthem 9:00 a.m. service When I Survey the Wondrous Cross Richard Shephard When I survey the wondrous cross on which the Prince of Glory died, my richest gain I count but loss, and pour contempt on all my pride. Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast, save in the death of Christ, my God: all the vain things that charm me most, I sacrifice them to his blood. See, from his head, his hands, - 7 -

his feet, sorrow and love flow mingled down! Did e er such love and sorrow meet, or thorns compose so rich a crown? Were the whole realm of nature mine, that were a present far too small; love so amazing, so divine, demands my soul, my life, my all. Amen. [Isaac Watts]. 11:00 a.m. service Lord, Let Me Know Mine End Maurice Greene Lord, let me know mine end and the number of my days: that I may be certified how long I have to live. Behold, thou hast made my days, as it were a span long: and mine age is even as nothing in respect of thee; and verily every man living is altogether vanity. For man walketh in a vain shadow, and disquieteth himself in vain; he heapeth up riches, and cannot tell who shall gather them. And now, Lord, what is my hope? Truly my hope is even in thee. Hear my prayer, O Lord, and with thine ears consider my calling. Hold not thy peace at my tears. O spare me, spare me a little, that I may recover my strength before I go hence and be no more seen. At the Presentation O Lord our God, you are worthy to receive glory and honor and power; People Because you have created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being. The Great Thanksgiving (Eucharistic Prayer I from Enriching Our Worship) The Lord be with you. People And also with you. People People Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is truly right, and good and joyful, to give you thanks, all-holy God, source of life and fountain of mercy, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who was tempted in every way as we are, yet did not sin. By his grace we are able to triumph over every evil, and to live no longer for ourselves alone, but for him who died for us and rose again. Therefore, joining with Angels and Archangels and with the faithful of every generation, we lift our voices with all creation as we sing: Sanctus and Benedictus Hymnal S 115 Missa Marialis - 8 -

The congregation kneels, and the continues. Blessed are you, gracious God, creator of the universe and giver of life. You formed us in your own image and called us to dwell in your infinite love. You gave the world into our care that we might be your faithful stewards and show forth your bountiful grace. But we failed to honor your image in one another and in ourselves; we would not see your goodness in the world around us; and so we violated your creation, abused one another, and rejected your love. Yet you never ceased to care for us, and prepared the way of salvation for all people. Through Abraham and Sarah you called us into covenant with you. You delivered us from slavery, sustained us in the wilderness, and raised up prophets to renew your promise of salvation. Then, in the fullness of time, you sent your eternal Word, made mortal flesh in Jesus. Born into the human family, and dwelling among us, he revealed your glory. Giving himself freely to death on the cross, he triumphed over evil, opening the way of freedom and life. On the night before he died for us, our Savior Jesus Christ took bread, and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his friends, and said: Take, eat: This is my Body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. As supper was ending, Jesus took the cup of wine, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said: Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: and People Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. The continues Remembering his death and resurrection, we now present to you from your creation this bread and this wine. By your Holy Spirit may they be for us the Body and Blood of our Savior Jesus Christ. Grant that we who share these gifts may be filled with the Holy Spirit and live as Christ s Body in the world. Bring us into the everlasting heritage of your daughters and sons, that with all your saints, past, present, and yet to come, we may praise your Name for ever. Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, to you be honor, glory, and praise, for ever and ever. AMEN. - 9 -

As our Savior Christ has taught us, we now pray, and People (2nd translation of the Lord s Prayer, from The Book of Common Prayer) Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen. Fraction Anthem Agnus Dei Hymnal S 159 Missa Marialis The Gifts of God for the People of God. Communion In the Episcopal Church, all baptized Christians are encouraged to receive communion. This is the Lord s table. It is the Lord who invites you. It is his wish that those who want him should meet him here. During communion, please come forward at the direction of the ushers, to the high altar or to the chapel altar, filling in at the altar rail from right to left, and either kneeling or standing to receive. For those who prefer not to use the steps, please either go to the chapel or request from an usher that communion be brought to you in your pew. Our custom in the Episcopal Church is to receive both elements by putting hands forward, palms crossed and facing upward to receive the bread, and by guiding the chalice lightly to receive the wine. Please note that receiving just the bread or wine alone is fully receiving communion. Gluten-free wafers are available at the high altar; let the priest know when you go up to receive. During the Communion Hymn 328 Draw Nigh and Take the Body of the Lord Song 46 At the 11:00 a.m. service only Anthem Panis angelicus (sung in Latin) César Franck The bread of angels becomes the bread of humankind. The heavenly bread gives an end to earthly forms. O marvelous and wondrous sacrament: the poor one, the servant and the humble all partake of the Lord. - 10 -

The congregation stands when the returns to the altar. Sending Out of Eucharistic Visitors We who are many are one body. People For we all share one bread, and one cup. Postcommunion Prayer From Enriching Our Worship God of abundance, you have fed us with the bread of life and cup of salvation; you have united us with Christ and one another; and you have made us one with all your people in heaven and on earth. Now send us forth in the power of your Spirit, that we may proclaim your redeeming love to the world and continue for ever in the risen life of Christ our Savior. Amen. Prayer over the People Deacon Bow down before the Lord. The congregation bows.
