Taking the Place of Barabbas SCRIPTURE Luke 23: 13-26 (NKJV) 13 Then Pilate, when he had called together the chief priests, the rulers, and the people, 14 said to them, You have brought this Man to me, as one who misleads the people. And indeed, having examined Him in your presence, I have found no fault in this Man concerning those things of which you accuse Him; 15 no, neither did Herod, for I sent you back to him; and indeed nothing deserving of death has been done by Him. 16 I will therefore chastise Him and release Him 17 (for it was necessary for him to release one to them at the feast). 18 And they all cried out at once, saying, Away with this Man, and release to us Barabbas 19 who had been thrown into prison for a certain rebellion made in the city, and for murder. 20 Pilate, therefore, wishing to release Jesus, again called out to them. 21 But they shouted, saying, Crucify Him, crucify Him! 22 Then he said to them the third time, Why, what evil has He done? I have found no reason for death in Him. I will therefore chastise Him and let Him go. 23 But they were insistent, demanding with loud voices that He be crucified. And the voices of these men and of the chief priests prevailed. 24 So Pilate gave sentence that it should be as they requested. 25 And he released to them the one they requested, who for rebellion and murder had been thrown into prison; but he delivered Jesus to their will. The Kings is on a Cross 26 Now as they led Him away, they laid hold of a certain man, Simon a Cyrenian, who was coming from the country, and on him they laid the cross that he might bear it after Jesus. RESPONSIVE READING Psalm 71: 1-8 (NKJV) LEADER: CONG: LEADER: CONG: ALL: In You, O Lord, I put my trust; Let me never be put to shame. Deliver me in Your righteousness, and cause me to escape; Incline Your ear to me, and save me. Be my strong refuge, To which I may resort continually; You have given the commandment to save me, For You are my rock and my fortress. Deliver me, O my God, out of the hand of the wicked, Out of the hand of the unrighteous and cruel man. For You are my hope, O Lord GOD; You are my trust from my youth. By You I have been upheld from birth; You are He who took me out of my mother s womb. My praise shall be continually of You. I have become as a wonder to many, But You are my strong refuge. Let my mouth be filled with Your praise And with Your glory all the day. 5
Love Lifted Me I was sinking deep in sin, far from the peaceful shore, Very deeply stained within, Sinking to rise no more; But the Master of the sea Heard my despairing cry, From the waters lifted me Now safe am I. CHORUS: Love lifted me, Love lifted me, When nothing else could help, Love lifted me; Love lifted me, Love lifted me, When nothing else could help, Love lifted me. All my Heart to Him I give, Ever to Him I ll cling, In His blessed presence live, Ever His praises sing. Love so mighty and so true Merits my soul s best songs; Faithful, loving service too To Him belongs. Souls in danger, look above, Jesus completely saves; He will lift you by His love Out of the angry waves. He s the Master of the sea, Billows His will obey; He your Savior wants to be-be saved today. 6

When we celebrate Black History Month, we recognize, honor and acknowledge the contributions of our future Trail Blazers. Julia Nepper, a young protégée and native of North Carolina. She began college at age 11 and graduated with two associate degrees from Cape Fear Community College in Wilmington at age 14. Julia earned her bachelor s degree from UNCW at 16. In her 23rd year of life she earned her Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin. Julia states: Most of the people I ve met in my life could have done what I did if they had the right support. Keven Stonewall, a young sophomore biology major at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, already has a major scientific discovery under his belt. He spent the summer before his senior year of high school in a lab at Rush University in Chicago developing an experiment to study how aging affects a person s ability to fight colon cancer. With plans to become an oncologist and earn both M.D. and Ph.D. degrees, Keven is a very focused student, earning dean s list recognition both semesters of his freshman year at UW-Madison. He is also an ambassador to students interested in pursuing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) majors at the university. Keven states: I had a lot of people around me affected by cancer, I knew I needed to do something to try to stop it. As a leader you have to step up. Hanif Johnson, a young alumni of Penn state won the seat in the general election for the Dauphin County Magisterial District in Pennsylvania on Election Day last year, becoming the youngest Magisterial District Judge in the state at 27 years old. The Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, native began his term in January and will preside over cases within the predominately black state capital. Hanif states: It s crazy because I know how it feels sitting across from that judge and that jury when you re innocent. 12
