From The Pastor Resentment (Adapted from article by Fr Jeffrey F. Kirby in Crux, Jan 28, 2018) Occasionally it is important to review some of those out-of-the-way sins the ones that get missed, dropped out along the way. A big one is resentment. We all know that Christians are called to the most excellent way of love. We recall that this is neatly summarized by Saint Paul in the epistle used at most marriages (1 Cor 13:3 ff): Love is patient and kind. It is not envious, boastful, proud, self-seeking, and does not dishonor others. It is not easily angered and does not keep a record of wrongs. It does not delight in evil, but rejoices in the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, and always perseveres. Love never fails. Going over this list, it is easy enough to see that every sin is, in some neglectful way, a sin against love! The call to love is noble but a stretch for us humans. We are often more comfortable with duplicity and denial values related to love are easily manipulated and can be perverted, especially by resentment, which leads us to displace energies away from true virtue and authentic love. The German Catholic philosopher, Max Scheler, called resentment a self-poisoning of the mind that forms a lasting mental attitude. It is caused by the repression of certain emotions and affects which leads to a constant tendency to indulge in value delusions and judgments which induce revenge, hatred, malice, envy, the impulse to detract, and spite. The experience of resentment goes like this: A person recognizes a true value and is being called to accept it, e.g., I should help my neighbor who is in need. But the call is denied and repressed, or done but without true love: I m not going to help. I m too busy and I don t like that person, or, I don t like that I had to help that person. Nurtured in this way, resentment grows until a person finds him/herself resentful toward others who are kind and charitable. Here, it takes on the illusion of virtue: She shouldn t be helping him. He needs to take care of himself. Why are they so happy? How will that person ever get on their feet with all this hand-holding? Scheler writes that resentment is filled with envy, the impulse to detract, malice, and secret vindictiveness. These affects become fixed attitudes, detached from all determinate objects. Independently of a person s will, his/her attention will then be instinctively drawn by all events which can set these affects in motion. The resentful attitude even plays a role in the formation of perceptions, expectations, and memories. It automatically selects those aspects of experience which can justify the factual application of this pattern of feeling. In the end, resentment corrodes the soul making the person miserable and wanting others to be miserable. Resentment is the most dishonest sin because it disguises itself as virtue and good will. And so, we can only discover resentment in ourselves through sincere repentance and active prayer. And in others by dialogue and listening to the reasons others give for doing some act. Resentment turns love upside down. It implodes the heart, turns marriages into battlefields, rips families apart, makes workplaces arenas of passive aggression, and allows societies to dismiss the sick, the unborn, the migrant, and others in need. In navigating the issues and concerns of our day, we need to be aware of resentment and turn it around a truly fitting resolution for this Lenten season, don t you think? But above all, I recommend to you the priests dearest to me: the priest who baptized me, the priests who absolved me from my sins, the priests at whose Masses I assisted & who gave me Your body & blood in Communion, the priests to whom I am indebted any other way especially (name.) O Jesus, keep them all close to your heart, and bless them abundantly in time & in eternity.
