O THE SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT FEBRUARY 25, 2018 Pray for those preparing for the Easter Sacraments Last Sunday we sent our Catechumens to the Cathedral to be received by Bishop Barber in the Rite of Election. They are the Elect to be received into the Church at the Easter Vigil. Please pray for our Catechumens: Stephanie Smith, Heather Solis, Julia Bowen, Kendall McVeigh, and Dillon McVeigh. Please pray for our Candidates for full reception into the Church: Lupita Ruiz, Laura Bender, Joshua Walters, and Xavier Ochoa. May Jesus purify them and enlighten them. Lent is the season of Enlightenment and Purification. Last Sunday we joined Jesus who entered the desert where he was tempted. We are asked to reflect on our lives during this season to see where we have been tempted and where we have sinned turning away from God and choosing to do wrong and failing to do good. We began Lent by putting on ashes with the words repent and believe in the gospel. These were the words of Jesus after leaving the desert and beginning his ministry revealing the kingdom of God. This week we come to the mountain of the transfiguration where Jesus revealed himself in His glorified body. If we are to receive the Gospel and live in the Kingdom of God where we can see the glory of Jesus revealed we must begin by repenting. Practicing daily examination of your conscience will help you to be aware of how you have missed the message of Jesus and turn to him for forgiveness to purify yourself so you may be enlightened and see the glory of God. Disciples on the Journey memory verse If God is for us, who can be against us? Romans 8:31 Living as a Disciples The Gospel has God claiming that Jesus is his beloved son and exhorts us to listen to him. This week will try to listen to Jesus in the daily scripture readings in other people, in your prayer... Write down what you heard Jesus saying to you. Walking together in Freedom daily reflection for Tuesday Go home and wash up. Clean up your act. Sweep your lives clean of your evil doings so you don t have to look at them any longer. Say no to wrong. Learn to do good. Work for justice. Help the down and out. Stand up for the homeless. Go to bat for the defenseless. Paraphrase of Isaiah 1:16-17 Pilgrimage to the Holy Land--A schedule change Our pilgrimage to the Holy Land now departs on October 17th and returns October 29th. On October 24th we go to Mount Tabor to the Basilica of the Transfiguration. We will gather there for prayer asking that we may see the glory of Jesus just like the disciples did in the Gospel today. Contact Jay in the office at 510-537-0806 for more information about the Pilgrimage. Confessions Available during Lent every Thursday at 7pm and Saturday at 3:30pm. A communal penance service will be on Tuesday, March 20th at 7pm. Peace, Fr. Tom Gospel for the Third Sunday of Lent (March 4th) John 2:13-25 Since the Passover of the Jews was near, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. He found in the temple area those who sold oxen, sheep, and doves, as well as the money changers seated there. He made a whip out of cords and drove them all out of the temple area, with the sheep and oxen, and spilled the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables, and to those who sold doves he said, "Take these out of here, and stop making my Father's house a marketplace." His disciples recalled the words of Scripture, Zeal for your house will consume me. At this the Jews answered and said to him, "What sign can you show us for doing this?" Jesus answered and said to them, "Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up." The Jews said, "This temple has been under construction for forty-six years, and you will raise it up in three days?" But he was speaking about the temple of his body. Therefore, when he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they came to believe the Scripture and the word Jesus had spoken. While he was in Jerusalem for the feast of Passover, many began to believe in his name when they saw the signs he was doing. But Jesus would not trust himself to them because he knew them all, and did not need anyone to testify about human nature. He himself understood it well. 1

LENTEN LECTURE SERIES Biblical Reflections on Christian Discipleship Presented by Fr. Francisco Nahoe This series, offered by Fr. Francisco Nahoe OFM Conv., examines Christian Discipleship in light of Biblical narratives from the Book of Genesis, the Psalms, the Gospels, the Acts of the Apostles, the Pauline letters & the letters of John. Following a method laid out by Pope Saint John Paul II, we will address human, spiritual, intellectual & social dimensions of Christian Discipleship in order to foster our own ongoing growth as ever more authentic disciples of the Lord Jesus. Bring your Bible & an open heart & ask the Spirit of God to move within you. Join us for Mass in the Church at 6:00pm, followed by a Soup & Bread Lenten Meal at 6:30pm. Lectures begin at 7:15pm. February 28th The Role of the Eucharist in Recovering Authentic Discipleship March 7th The Journey of Discipleship in the Gospel of Luke and Acts March 14th Portraits of Beloved Discipleship in the Gospel of John March 21st Pauline Paths of Christian Discipleship LENTEN SOUP MEAL Please plan on joining us for a simple meal of soup and bread on Wednesday s during Lent. It will be a time for fellowship and families coming together. Our Soup Meal follows the 6:00pm Mass. Thank you to our Italian Catholic Federation for sponsoring the Soup Meal. Financial donations at the Soup Meal will be accepted for CRS Rice Bowl. STATIONS OF THE CROSS English & Spanish Stations of the Cross in English, led by our school students are offered at Our Lady of Grace, Friday s at 2:00pm during Lent in the Church. Stations of the Cross in Spanish are offered also on Friday s at 7:00pm in the Church. DO NOT BE AFRAID OF CONFESSION During the Lenten season, Confession will be available every Thursday from 7:00pm during Adoration and on Saturdays from 3:30-4:30pm. Our Communal Penance service is scheduled for Tuesday, March 20th at 7:00pm. 2 THE 2018 BISHOP S APPEAL To successfully achieve both our parish goal & the overall diocesan goal of $3 million, we need your help! A pledge to Appeal will help us reach out to thousands in the East Bay through diocesan ministries, programs & services. Participation is the Key Ingredient If you have not had an opportunity to make a pledge by returning your card through the mail, please complete a pledge envelope found in the pew & place it in the collection basket today. YOUR GIFT MAKES A DIFFERENCE. Thank you to all who generously contributed last year. Our Lady of Grace raised 121% of our goal & we were one of the 1st parishes to reach our goal so quickly! Our goal this year is $29,000. If each family in our parish contributes at least $30, we will achieve it. God Bless! Why Should I Give When My Parish is Able to Pay for its Own Ministries & Services? Because, while your parish may be able to fund its own ministries & services, we must look beyond our parish & address the needs of our sisters & brothers throughout the diocese. No one parish can successfully address the needs as the diocese can. Also, where would any parish be if the diocese did not pay to educate our seminarians, who will become our priests of the future? Would parishes be able to pay for its current priest, their medical & retirement benefits? As part of a Universal Church, we have responsibilities beyond our parish. CINCO DE MAYO FIESTA DINNER AUCTION Donations Needed! Our spring auction is weeks away & we need your help to make it a success! Without you, OLG s main fundraiser would be a mere siesta. Our event raises funds needed to benefit our scholars, school & parish. There are many EASY ways in which one may help with the success of our fiesta: DONATIONS. We need donations. Do you have a nice bottle of wine? Extra tickets to a Sporting Event? Play? Musical? Symphony? Is there a favorite kids class/camp, fitness club/class, restaurant, spa, hair salon that you might solicit a gift certificate or gift basket from? Do you have a cabin or vacation home?
