CARE GROUP LESSON LESSON 10 REST IS GOOD We have been learning that God is good. In our final lesson, we will look at the strong connection between good and rest and look at how prayer leads to our resting in the Lord. Rest is good. Rest must be of God because He is good. Rest is the will of God. If God s will is rest, then why are there many believers so tired and worried. Jeremiah 6:16 Thus says the Lord: "Stand in the ways and see, And ask for the old paths, where the good way is, And walk in it; Then you will find rest for your souls. But they said, 'We will not walk in it.' (NKJV) Jeremiah says when you find something that is of God, you find something that is good. When you find something that is good, rest comes with it. Peace comes with it. You are led by the Spirit and you find something good. You start to walk in it and go deep into it, you will find rest and peace. But if you are going into a wrong way, you will be more agitated and frustrated, because it is not the good thing. Peace and rest come with the good thing, and the further you go into it, it gets brighter, and the strength and the peace get stronger and stronger. Rest is good. There is rest and peace in good. When you get into good, you get into rest. Grief and sorrow are the reason why many are tired and worried So, why are many believers so tired and so worried? Jesus gives us a picture as to why many are tired. When Jesus asked the disciples to pray, they fell asleep instead of praying. They were exhausted from sorrow. Luke 22:45 When He rose up from prayer, and had come to His disciples, He found them sleeping from sorrow. (NKJV)

The disciples were worn out by grief. They were exhausted from sorrow. Psalms 6:6 I am worn out from groaning; all night long I flood my bed with weeping and drench my couch with tears. (NIV) Grief and sorrow will wear you out. It causes you to be fatigued beyond your physical limit. I don t care how strong your physical frame is, how good of health you are in, how strong of a physical condition you are in, sorrow can fatigue you to the point of death. The sorrow of the world produces death. 2 Corinthians 7:10 For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death. (NKJV) Many people are grieved over many things and over what is happening. They pray over the situations but they do it in grief. They are so sad and weak. They are so fatigued. They think that it is an honorable thing when they pray in sorrow and grief. A grieving prayer is a weak prayer. Nehemiah 8:10 Then he said to them, "Go your way, eat the fat, drink the sweet, and send portions to those for whom nothing is prepared; for this day is holy to our Lord. Do not sorrow, for the joy of the Lord is your strength." (NKJV) If you want to get the spiritual business done, you must be strong, and in order to be strong, you must have joy. You need to have joy. Don t get caught up in the deception that says, When you are grieving, you are more spiritual than other people because you are more aware of problems and troubles. Do you think God is depressed on the throne? Do you think Jesus is full of sorrow and grieving? Is being sorrowful all He can do because of all the problems in this world? He knows all the problems that are in the earth, but He is not weak. Sorrow wears you out, it fatigues you. You say, I have lost my loved ones. Did they go to heaven? If they go to heaven, you should not be sorry for them. Is heaven real to you? If it is real to you, you should not sorrow either. Yes, you miss them and you have some tears. But you should not grieve week after week. You will not be incapacitated if you

have faith, if heaven is real to you, and if God is real to you. You don t lose them, they just moved. You will see them soon. We all will be out of here one day one way or another. Death is not supposed to scare or move us. It is not supposed to shake us. We should be able to stand by the grave site and say, Death, where is your victory? You don t scare us. Nobody can keep us in a box. You may put my old body there, but I will come back and pick it up too. Why should we sorrow like those who have no hope? Why should we be so fatigued? Don t be incapacitated because your loved ones die. Some people are so depressed that they cannot go to work for three months. They can t fellowship with their friends. They need to wake up and realize that their life is lacking if they stay being grieved. They give a cat, a dog or a person a place in their heart where God should have. They say that they could not live without a cat or a dog or a person. That is not right. Don t say, I could not live without my dad. I could not live without my mom. I could not live without my husband. Don t say such a thing. God is your life. In Him, you are complete and strong enough. Your hope should not be in another human in order to live. God is your life. You might miss those who have gone away but you should not be controlled by sorrow like those who have no hope. Being controlled by this sorrow, can lead to lack of sleep and physical problems. Ecclesiastes 5:12 The sleep of a laborer is sweet, whether he eats little or much, but the abundance of a rich man permits him no sleep. (NIV) If you are at the stage of lack of sleep, God can heal you. If you are willing to make some adjustments and changes and to receive His healing power, you can sleep well. You can be free. God can make you able to sleep. Insomnia is a cause of several physical problems. When you cannot sleep, you will have problems in your body, your mind, your mental ability and stability, and your immune system. And if insomnia continues week after week and month after month, it will negatively affect your life. It is not OK for you to make excuses by saying, It is normal for me that I cannot sleep at night. I sleep only two hours at night. It does not mean that you are special. It means that you need to be healed and delivered. You need more than two hours of sleep at night. Rest is good. Some people have difficulty sleeping because they don t have enough physical activities. All they do is sit behind a computer all day or sit on the couch

when they get home. We should do some walking and moving. We should do some exercise and exert ourselves physically. It will help us sleep. A laboring man s sleep is sweet. Why is the rich man not sleeping in Ecclesiastes 5:12? He is worrying about his money and all of his investments. His mental activities are active. He is laying on his bed and he is full of fear. He is thinking, What if that person rips me off? What if that investment does not go well? What will happen to the stock market tomorrow? Should I sell that stock now? Or should I wait for a week? What if I make a wrong decision? He cannot sleep. Why? Because he is not in faith. Give your cares to the Lord by praying When we walk by faith, we will cast all of our cares upon the Lord and we can sleep. Don t try to figure out everything and think of everything. Ecclesiastes 8:14-17 There is a vanity which occurs on earth, that there are just men to whom it happens according to the work of the wicked; again, there are wicked men to whom it happens according to the work of the righteous. I said that this also is vanity. 15 So I commended enjoyment, because a man has nothing better under the sun than to eat, drink, and be merry; for this will remain with him in his labor all the days of his life which God gives him under the sun. 16 When I applied my heart to know wisdom and to see the business that is done on earth, even though one sees no sleep day or night, 17 then I saw all the work of God, that a man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun. For though a man labors to discover it, yet he will not find it; moreover, though a wise man attempts to know it, he will not be able to find it. (NKJV) What do these Scriptures mean? It means that you will not be able to figure it all out. So go to sleep. It is not profitable to keep trying to figure everything out. You keep thinking about the same old stuff but you don t know everything and you don t have all the answers. All you do is hurt yourself. The more you think about certain things, the less resting you are doing. Problems weigh on you, you are tired and weary. You may think that you are spiritual because you want to figure the plan of God for your life.

Instead of thinking or trying to figure it out, you should pray. Don t think. Pray. How are you going to pray if you don t know what to say? Thank God for praying in the Spirit. Isaiah 28:12 To whom He said, "This is the rest with which You may cause the weary to rest," And, "This is the refreshing"; Yet they would not hear. (NKJV) You should quit trying to figure it out and start praying in the Spirit. You may be tempted to think and figure it out. You are not going to find out everything in this life. If you keep thinking and trying to figure it out, you will lay there, fret and worry. What should you do? You should cast all of your cares upon the Lord and pray in the Spirit. After you pray in the Spirit for a period of time, you will get a release in your spirit. You will feel better and lighter. You may not know the answer in your head, but you know in your spirit that the answer from God is coming. You will know God s will. You get out from unbelief and get in faith. God is helping you. You have faith that when you pray in the Spirit, you are praying for the perfect will of God. You will see it, get it and know it. You don t get it by trying to figure it out. A lot of answers are not there in your head. Don t keep thinking and looking for an answer in your head. You lay there in bed night after night and you look for it in your brain. You are not going to find it because it is not there. But there is Somebody inside you who is the Greater One. He knows about everything. And when you get in faith, He will give you utterance. You will pray out mysteries of God. You can sleep sweet like a baby. When you wake up in the morning, your head does not know anything more, but your heart is at peace. You have faith that God will show you the answer and you will know it. Psalms 3:4-6 I cried to the Lord with my voice, And He heard me from His holy hill. 5 I lay down and slept; I awoke, for the Lord sustained me. 6 I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people Who have set themselves against me all around. (NKJV) Psalms 3:4-6 I cried out to the Lord, and he answered me from his holy mountain. Interlude 5 I lay down and slept, yet I woke up in safety, for the Lord was watching over me. 6 I am not afraid of ten thousand enemies who surround me on every side. (NLT)

These are the words that have the power to deliver you from insomnia. You get them inside you and speak them over yourself today, tomorrow and the days to come. There is power in these words to break insomnia and fear. The Lord is watching over you while you are sleeping. The English version says, I lie down and sleep, and all night long the Lord protects me. You can sleep all night long and the Lord protects you. Somebody says, All night long. Psalms 4:8 I will both lie down in peace, and sleep; For You alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety. (NKJV) These are good words of confession. You lay down, close your eyes, fellowship with God and say, I will lay myself down in peace and I will sleep, for You alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety. The English version says, When I lie down, I go to sleep in peace. You alone, O Lord, keep me perfectly safe. Moms and dads, you can sit down at the bedside and read these Scriptures to your children. Read them out loud over them. Put these words in your children s mouth. Even they wake up from a bad dream they have and they cry, you comfort them and put these words in their mouth: I lay myself down in peace and sleep. For You, Lord, make me dwell in safety. Of course, it helps if you don t have heavy metal music blasting in the bed room next door. Turn the computer off because there might be new emails in it. They will be there tomorrow for you to read. Rest. Peace. Sleep. The Scriptures belong to us. Rest is good. Psalms 121:2-5 My help comes from the Lord, Who made heaven and earth. 3 He will not allow your foot to be moved; He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, He who keeps Israel Shall neither slumber nor sleep. 5 The Lord is your keeper; The Lord is your shade at your right hand. (NKJV) The Lord is watching us all night long so that we can sleep. God is working it out while we are sleeping. Psalms 127:1-2 Unless the Lord builds the house, They labor in vain who build it; Unless the Lord guards the city, The watchman stays awake in vain.

2 It is vain for you to rise up early, To sit up late, To eat the bread of sorrows; For so He gives His beloved sleep. (NKJV) It is useless for you to rise up early, to sit up late and to be sorrowful. Let us say, I am His beloved. He gives me sleep. My sleep is sweet. I don t worry. I don t fear. I rest. If you can t sleep, you read these verses out loud. And you do them. You need to lie down, turn your computer and TV off. Proverbs 3:21-24 My son, let them not depart from your eyes-- Keep sound wisdom and discretion; 22 So they will be life to your soul And grace to your neck. 23 Then you will walk safely in your way, And your foot will not stumble. 24 When you lie down, you will not be afraid; Yes, you will lie down and your sleep will be sweet. (NKJV)
