Spreading A Love for God and His Glory March 19, 2017 "Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord." Ephesians 6:4

Our worship is a response to God s initiative. The pattern of our worship reflects the gospel. Call to Worship Worship begins with God who invites us and welcomes us into his presence. Because of Christ, we can approach God with boldness even though we are sinful and weak. WELCOME & ANNOUNCEMENTS *CALL TO WORSHIP: Psalm 103:1-5, 8 Leader: Bless the LORD, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name! All: Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits, who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, Leader: Who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy, who satisfies you with good so that your youth is renewed like the eagle s. All: The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. *COME, THOU FOUNT OF EVERY BLESSING - Hymn #457 Come, thou fount of every blessing, tune my heart to sing thy grace streams of mercy, never ceasing, call for songs of loudest praise Teach me some melodious sonnet, sung by flaming tongues above. Praise the mount! I'm fixed upon it, mount of God's unchanging love Here I raise my Ebenezer; hither by thy help I've come and I hope, by thy good pleasure, safely to arrive at home Jesus sought me when a stranger, wandering from the fold of God he, to rescue me from danger, interposed his precious blood Oh, to grace how great a debtor daily I'm constrained to be Let that grace now, like a fetter, bind my wandering heart to thee prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, prone to leave the God I love here's my heart, O take and seal it; seal it for thy courts above - 2 - *Indicates when to stand. All Music Copied Under CCLI License #34680

*HOW GREAT IS OUR GOD The splendor of the King clothed in majesty. Let all the earth rejoice, let all the earth rejoice. He wraps himself in light and darkness tries to hide and trembles at his voice, and trembles at his voice. How great is our God, sing with me. How great is our God, and all will see how great, how great is our God. Age to age he stands and time is in his hands. Beginning and the end, beginning and the end; the Godhead three in one: Father, Spirit, Son. The Lion and the Lamb, the Lion and the Lamb. (Bridge 2x) Name above all names, you are worthy of our praise and my heart will sing how great is our God. (Chorus 2x) *PRAYER OF PRAISE AND THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts As we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. - 3 -

BEHOLD OUR GOD Who has held the oceans in his hands? Who has numbered every grain of sand? Kings and nations tremble at his voice. All creation rises to rejoice. Behold our God, seated on his throne. Come let us adore him. Behold our King, nothing can compare. Come let us adore him! Who has given counsel to the Lord? Who can question any of his words? Who can teach the one who knows all things? Who can fathom all his wondrous deeds? Who has felt the nails upon his hands, bearing all the guilt of sinful man? God eternal, humbled to the grave, Jesus, Savior, risen now to reign! You will reign forever, you will reign forever! (2x) - 4 -

COMMON CONFESSION OF SIN SCRIPTURE OF EXHORTATION: 1 Corinthians 10:13 No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. All: Lord, too often I am easily overtaken by my temptations. I do not take you at your word by looking for a way of escape. I do not struggle enough against my sins, and I seldom try to endure against them with any real effort. Righteous Father, you are faithful and merciful. Forgive me my sins for the sake of your Son Jesus. Grant to me new and fresh obedience, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Call to Confession We all sin daily, in thought and word and deed. As we come into God s presence, we acknowledge how we have rebelled against our King and seek his forgiveness. SILENT CONFESSION OF SIN DECLARATION OF GRACE: Psalm 25:6-7 Remember your mercy, O LORD, and your steadfast love, for they have been from of old. Remember not the sins of my youth or my transgressions; according to your steadfast love remember me, for the sake of your goodness, O LORD! *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH The Heidelberg Catechism (1563), Question 32 Minister: Why are you called a Christian? All: Because by faith I am a member of Christ and so I share in his anointing. I am anointed to confess his name, to present myself to him as a living sacrifice of thanks, to strive with a good conscience against sin and the devil in this life, and afterward to reign with Christ over all creation for all eternity. - 5 -

*BEFORE THE THRONE OF GOD ABOVE Before the throne of God above I have a strong and perfect plea, a great High Priest whose name is Love, who ever lives and pleads for me. My name is graven on his hands, My name is written on his heart; I know that while in heav'n he stands no tongue can bid me thence depart, no tongue can bid me thence depart. When Satan tempts me to despair, and tells me of the guilt within, upward I look and see him there who made an end of all my sin. Because the sinless Savior died, my sinful soul is counted free; for God the Just is satisfied to look on him and pardon me, to look on him and pardon me. Behold him there! The risen Lamb, my perfect, spotless righteousness; the great unchangeable I AM, the King of glory and of grace! One with himself I cannot die, my soul is purchased by his blood; my life is hid with Christ on high, with Christ, my Savior and my God, with Christ, my Savior and my God. Offering We give back to God a portion of what he has given us to use to declare that he is Lord of all. (This is part of our service as a church family, and visitors should not feel obligated to participate.) OFFERTORY & RESPONSE Reminder: please sign and pass the Attendance Register down the pew. 11 a.m. Service: Children ages 4-6 excused for Children s Church (downstairs in the Corner Classroom) - 6 -

Sermon Series: Ephesians 5 & 6 Pastor Lloyd Pierson, Ph.D. Parents & Children - A Manual Ephesians 6:1-4 (ESV) Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 Honor your father and mother (this is the first commandment with a promise), 3 that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land. 4 Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. I. Seriously, this is all we get? Sermon Outline II. The hard work of the heart - 8 -

Sermon Questions for Further Reflection 1. Four verses are all Paul gives us here on how to raise children. We have many entire books on the subject. Why do you think we are not given more here? (Hint: Eph 1-5.) 2. In the ancient world, fathers had a near absolute authority over the welfare of their children. Why do you think Paul centers in on provoking anger here? 3. In what way does this complement the Lord s instruction in Deut 6:1-9? 4. Paul draws from Ex 20:12 when he speaks of a promise given for obedience. What are we to make of this? In what ways are children blessed for obedience? Sermon God addresses and speaks to us by the reading and preaching of his Word. Both Christians and non-christians need to hear the good news of salvation and grow in it. 5. Just like in the verses above on marriage, Paul addresses the heart. There is no paint by numbers approach given to us. This seems to be one area where we truly want a by the numbers plan. How does the gospel undo that? What ways do we resist and why do we resist? 6. We can often have a bunker mentality when it comes to protecting our kids. Why does this not work? (Hint - Your personal sin is greater than the sin outside of your family.) - 9 -

*HE WILL HOLD ME FAST When I fear my faith will fail, Christ will hold me fast; When the tempter would prevail, He will hold me fast. I could never keep my hold through lifeʼs fearful path; For my love is often cold; He must hold me fast. He will hold me fast, He will hold me fast; For my Saviour loves me so, He will hold me fast. The Lord s Supper The gospel is not only heard, but visibly seen as God invites us to commune with him at his table. In the Lord s Supper we remember and experience Jesus saving work. Those He saves are His delight, Christ will hold me fast; Precious in his holy sight, He will hold me fast. Heʼll not let my soul be lost; His promises shall last; Bought by Him at such a cost, He will hold me fast. For my life He bled and died, Christ will hold me fast; Justice has been satisfied; He will hold me fast. Raised with Him to endless life, He will hold me fast ʻTill our faith is turned to sight, When He comes at last! (Chorus 3x) CELEBRATION OF THE LORD S SUPPER Wine is located in the two outer rings; juice is located in the center ring. (See FCC observance on below) At Faith Covenant, the Lord s Supper is observed each Lord s Day as the climax of our worship service. We invite to the Lord s Table all those who are baptized disciples of Jesus Christ, under the authority of Christ and His body, the Church. By eating the bread and drinking the cup with us as a visitor, you are acknowledging to our church that you are in covenant with God. You also acknowledge that you are a sinner, without hope except in the sovereign mercy of God, and that you are trusting in Jesus Christ alone for your salvation. If you have any doubts about your participation, please speak to the pastor or one of the elders after the service. Wine and bread are the elements of the supper as instituted by Jesus Christ. We recommend the use of wine; however we offer both juice and wine in the tray to allow true liberty of conscience. - 10 -

PRAYER FOR THE CONGREGATION *THIS IS MY FATHER S WORLD - Hymn #111 This is my Father's world, and to my list'ning ears All nature sings and around me rings, the music of the spheres This is my Father's world, I rest me in the thought Of rocks and trees of skies and seas, His hand the wonders wrought This is my Father's world, the birds their carols raise The morning light the lily white, declare their maker's praise This is my Father's world, He shines in all that's fair In the rustling grass I hear him pass, He speaks to me ev'rywhere This is my Father's world, O let me ne'er forget That though the wrong seems oft so strong, God is the ruler yet This is my Father's world, the battle is not done Jesus who died shall be satisfied, and earth and heav'n be one *BENEDICTION If you are in need of personal prayer, an elder is available up front after the service. Benediction Just as worship begins with God s call, it ends with God sending us into the world with his word of grace. We go forth to live and serve by the power of his grace, not our own strength.
