The rites preceding the Liturgy of the Word, namely the Entrance, Greeting, the Penitential Act, Kyrie, the Gloria in excelsis (Glory to God in the highest), and Collect, have the character of a beginning, an introduction, and a preparation. Their purpose is to ensure that the faithful who come together as one, establish communion and dispose themselves to listen properly to the Word of God and to celebrate the Eucharist worthily. In certain celebrations that are combined with Mass according to the norms of the liturgical books, the Introductory Rites are omitted or performed in a particular way. THE LITURGY OF THE WORD GIRM, no. 55. The main part of the Liturgy of the Word is made up of the readings from Sacred Scripture together with the chants occurring between them. As for the Homily, the Profession of Faith, and the Universal Prayer, they develop and conclude it. For in the readings, as explained by the Homily, God speaks to his people, opening up to them the mystery of redemption and salvation, and offering spiritual nourishment; and Christ himself is present through his word in the midst of the faithful. By silence and by singing, the people make this divine word their own, and affirm their adherence to it by means of the Profession of Faith; finally, having been nourished by the divine word, the people pour out their petitions by means of the Universal Prayer for the needs of the whole Church and for the salvation of the whole world. At the Last Supper Christ instituted the Paschal Sacrifice and banquet, by which the Sacrifice of the Cross is continuously made present in the Church whenever the Priest, representing Christ the Lord, carries out what the Lord himself did and handed over to his disciples to be done in his memory. For Christ took the bread and the chalice, gave thanks, broke the bread and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat, and drink: this is my Body; this is the chalice of my Blood. Do this in memory of me. Hence, the Church has arranged the entire celebration of the Liturgy of the Eucharist in parts corresponding to precisely these words and actions of Christ. IOM, no. 99. At the Last Supper, Christ instituted the sacrifice and paschal meal that make the sacrifice of the cross present in the Church. From the days of the Apostles the Church has celebrated that sacrifice by carrying out what the Lord did and handed over to his disciples to do in his memory. Like him, his priests have taken bread and wine, given thanks to God over them, broken the bread, and shared the bread and cup of blessing as the Body and Blood of Christ (see 1 Cor 10:16). The Eucharistic sacrifice, in all its rich variety of forms and traditions, has always retained this basic shape: the 12
taking of the elements of bread and wine in the Preparation of the Gifts, the act of thanksgiving in the Eucharistic Prayer, the breaking of the bread, the giving and sharing of the Body and Blood of Christ in Holy Communion. STL, no. 172. The Liturgy of the Eucharist is made up of three main parts: the Preparation of the Gifts, the Eucharistic Prayer, and the Communion Rite. The Preparation of the Gifts: Offertory Song: Preparation of the Altar: Collection: Procession with the Gifts: Preparation: Prayer over the Offerings: The Eucharistic Prayer: GIRM, no. 78. Now the center and high point of the entire celebration begins, namely, the Eucharistic Prayer itself, that is, the prayer of thanksgiving and sanctification. The Priest calls upon the people to lift up their hearts towards the Lord in prayer and thanksgiving; he associates the people with himself in the Prayer that he addresses in the name of the entire community to God the Father through Jesus Christ in the Holy Spirit. Furthermore, the meaning of the Prayer is that the entire congregation of the faithful joins with Christ in confessing the great deeds of God and in the offering of Sacrifice. The Eucharistic Prayer requires that everyone listen to it with reverence and in silence. IOM, no. 111. The Eucharistic Prayer, the center and summit of the entire celebration, summarizes what it means for the Church to celebrate the Eucharist. It is a memorial proclamation of praise and thanksgiving for God s work of creation and salvation, a proclamation in which the Body and Blood of Christ are made present by the power of the Holy Spirit and in which the people are joined to Christ in offering his sacrifice to the Father. The Eucharistic Prayer is addressed to the Father through Jesus Christ, by the priest celebrant in the name of all who are present. The faithful profess their faith and give their assent through dialogue, acclamations, and the Amen. The Communion Rite: GIRM, no. 80. Since the celebration of the Eucharist is the Paschal Banquet, it is desirable that in accordance with the Lord's command his Body and Blood should be received as spiritual food by those of the faithful who are properly disposed. This is the sense of the fraction and the other preparatory rites by which the faithful are led more immediately to Communion. IOM, no. 125. The reception together of the Lord s Body and Blood in a paschal meal is the culmination of the Eucharist. Those present are made ready to share in this banquet by a rite that leads from the Eucharistic Prayer directly to the Communion. This rite expresses the mutual love and reconciliation that are both the condition and the fruit of worthy communion and the unity of the many in the one symbolized at both the natural and the sacramental level. STL, no. 184. The high point of the Communion Rite is the reception of Holy Communion. This is preceded by rites that prepare the faithful to receive the Lord s Body and Blood as spiritual food. After the communion rite, the Mass closes with a brief concluding rite. Its purpose is to send the people forth to put into effect in their daily lives the Paschal Mystery and unity in Christ that they have celebrated. They are given a sense of abiding mission that calls them to witness to Christ in the world and to bring the Gospel to the poor. Here is reflected the mystery of the Church.
