ALL SOULS DAY November is an important time of year for commemoration in Canada. Today, November 2 nd, we celebrate All Souls Day, on which we remember all the deceased. On the 11th, we will be celebrating Armistice Day, or Remembrance Day, in honour of those who gave their lives for our country, and on November 5, a special Mass for our deceased priests (see below). In fact, the whole month of November is dedicated to remembering the dead. What does it mean to remember the deceased? We recall first of all that we are the body of Christ, that our family includes also those who have gone before us. The Catechism of the Catholic Church says that through the Communion of Saints, a perennial link of charity exists between the faithful who have already reached their heavenly home, those expiating their sins in Purgatory and those who are still pilgrims on earth. Between them there is an abundant exchange of all good things. Blessed are those who have died in the Lord; let them rest from their labours for their good deeds go with them. Eternal Rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen. INVITATION TO A SPECIAL MASS During this month of prayer for the dead, join us in prayer for our founding pastor, Fr. John Colford, Canon Oswald Sullivan and all those who dedicated their lives for the Church, at a Mass in memory of the deceased priests of the English-speaking sector of the diocese. Wed. November 5, at 12:10 pm, St. Patrick s Basilica, 460 René-Lévesque W. A PRAYER FOR OUR DECEASED PRIESTS God of mercy, we entrust all our departed priests to You, and ask that You grant our prayer through Jesus, our Eternal High Priest, who lives with You and the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever. Amen. PARISH FINANCE UPDATE October 19: Regular: $3,141,08; 3 rd Sunday: $1,200.03; for the missions: $871.62. October 26: $3,157.76. Parish bazaar: $5,636.28. WHAT S NEW ON THE PARISH BOOK TABLE A Guide to Christian Meditation - How to Engage More Deeply in Personal Prayer, by Fr. John Bartunek, LC Daily meditation keeps your faith lively, supple, and relevant, making your life more fruitful and continually opening up new vistas along the path to spiritual maturity. Let God change you from the inside out. St. Alphonsus Liguori believed that sin could not survive in the soul of a person who practised mental prayer. "He will either give up meditation," wrote Alphonsus, "or renounce sin." And a strong aversion to committing offenses against God is just the beginning of the benefits that flow from even modest dedication to Christian meditation. In this little book, you will find types of prayer, fundamentals of Christian meditation, a 4-step structure for meditation, how to overcome difficulties in prayer, and more!
