" \l 3Course Description Course Description The purpose of this seminar is to familiarize students with the most current mission methods being employed on mission fields throughout the world, and oftentimes, in missional churches in America. Students are also led to examine some of the great movements that are impacting the world of missions. Seminar participants become familiar with mission efforts being effectively used and with issues that impact modern missions. Core Values Addressed 1. Doctrinal Integrity - The course will follow the confessional commitments that are outlined in the Articles of Religious Belief and the Baptist Faith and Message 2000. 2. Doctrinal Integrity - The course will follow the confessional commitments that are outlined in the Articles of Religious Belief and the Baptist Faith and Message 2000.Spiritual Vitality - The professors will teach that church revitalization is not attainable without spiritual vitality among leadership and membership. Mission Focus - The mission focus will be highlighted during the course as a prerequisite and by-product of effective church revitalization.

4. Characteristic Excellence - The professors will teach that effective church revitalization is a service to Christ and therefore should be rendered with characteristic excellence. 5. Servant Leadership - The professors will teach that servant leadership is the supreme model of leadership necessary for effective church revitalization. The Core Value emphasis for 2017-2018 is Servant Leadership. Student Learning Outcomes By the completion of the course, each student will be able to: 1. Formulate essential biblical principles for contemporary mission methods and movements. 2.Identify various contemporary mission methods and movements. 3.Develop an understanding of strengths and limitations of existing contemporary mission methods and movements. 4.Value strategy development in contemporary mission settings. 5.Increase and implement strategic planning skills for in contemporary mission settings, including both local church and mission agency settings. Each student will read Discovering the Mission of God: Best Missional Practices for the 21st Century edited by Mike Barnett and Robin Martin and prepare an Executive Summary of the book. The Executive Summary should be primarily focus on contemporary mission methods and movements. The Executive Summary is to be 7-9 pages, single-spaced, a space between each single-spaced paragraphs, and paragraph indentions. No first person allowed. Each student will employ formal style according to Turabian regarding cover page, margins etc. Instead of footnotes, quotations may be referenced with end notes. The assignment will be due on May 20 and is to be posted on Blackboard. Each student will be assigned a section of the book on which to make a seminar presentation.

2. Each student will read Wind in the House of Islam: How God Is Drawing Muslims Around the World to Faith in Jesus Christ by David Garrison and Pioneering Movements: Leadership That Multiplies Disciples and Churches by Steve Addison. Each student will prepare a 5-7 page, single-spaced, Executive Summary of these two boosk based on the instructions in number 1 above. The assignment will be due on May 20 and is to be posted on Blackboard. Each student will be assigned a section of the book on which to make a seminar presentation. 3. Each student will read ONE (1) of the textbooks listed below, and compose an Annotated Analysis, to involve the following components: (1) a two-page summary of the contents of the book, (2) the identification of five [5] key insights and issues addressed in the book related to contemporary mission methods and movements and a one-page discussion for EACH insight, relating the importance of the insight in the student s ministry context, and (3) a one-page reflection on the two significant strengths of the book. (Total page count for this assignment = 8 pages). The Annotated Analysis is to be single-spaced, a space between each single-spaced paragraph, no paragraph indentions, and must utilize formal style according to Turabian, regarding cover page, margins, pagination, headings/subheadings, etc. Instead of footnotes, quotations can be referenced with end notes. No first person allowed. Students will present their book during the seminar. The Annotated Analysis will be due on May 20 and is to be posted on Blackboard. 4.The students will complete a Research Project involving an organization s contemporary mission strategy. Each student will select an organization (church, parachurch organization, or mission agency (including teams that are a part of a mission agency) which is employing contemporary mission methods or is involved in a contemporary mission movement. Each student will post his or her choice in the Blackboard Discussion Forum set up to record choices. Each student will include the following components in his or her Research Project for the selected organization: a detailed description of the organization s mission strategy/strategies, an explanation of the organization s mission methods and any involvement with contemporary mission movements, and an evaluation of the organization s strategy/strategies, methods, and any involvement with contemporary mission movements. The Research Project is to employ formal style according to Turabian regarding cover page, margins etc. Instead of footnotes, quotations may be referenced with end notes. The assignment is to be single-spaced (at least three pages), a space between each single-spaced paragraphs, and paragraph indentions. No first person allowed. The assignment is due on May 20 and is to be posted on Blackboard. Each student will present his or her research during the seminar. During the Seminar Seminar Presentations: Each seminar participant will be involved in seminar presentations and discussions involving all four Pre-seminar assignments. Seminar Participation: Seminar participants are expected to be active participants in all sessions of the seminar. After the Seminar: Each student will prepare a Mission Strategy Proposal for his or her ministry context. The Mission Strategy Proposal must draw upon seminar textbooks, class discussions, and research. Specific instructions regarding the format, structure, and components of the Church Revitalization Proposal will be given by the professors prior to the end of the seminar. The assignment will be due June 21 and is to be posted on Blackboard.
