G E N E T I C S By Rabbi Sender Haber One of the most powerful chapters of Tehillim is the one that we say each morning at the end of Shacharis. King David beseeches the G-d of Yaacov to help those who are in trouble. Why the G-d of Yaacov. Isn t he the G-d of all of us? What about G-d of Abraham? The Medrash explains that Yaacov is called upon because he put so much effort into the future of the Jewish people. He raised the tribes. He blessed them. He chastised them. He revealed their true essence to them. Reuvein was Yaacov s first energy. The simple meaning of the verse tells something about Yaacov s purity and the fact that Reuvein was the first-born. It also about where he put his energy. It was on the future and the next generation. As we say in Mincha on Shabbos, Yaacov U vanav yanuchu Bo. Reb Velvel Chechik was a holy man who lived in Jerusalem several decades ago. When he was sick in the hospital he was upset to no end that he could not study. His students tried to comfort him, pointing out that he had a good excuse and that G-d did not expect him to study in his state of health. True enough, he said, but I can t stand that my children see me lying around doing nothing. What kind of example am I setting for them? How will I teach the importance of time to the next generation? Sometimes we need to go beyond our energies for the next generation. A fourteen year old boy and his father once came to Rav Shach for a blessing. Rav Shach was very busy so the attendants allotted them just one minute. They emerged one and a half hours later. It turned out that the pair had tried to leave after one minute but Rav Shach had not allowed them to. The father had requested that Rav Shach bless his son with a love for Torah and Rav Shach had turned to the boy. Have you ever enjoyed Torah study? I ve tried, he responded, I ve worked hard, I ve studied, I ve listened, but I ve never found it enjoyable.
Rav Shach inquired as to what the boy was learning in yeshiva and took two Gemaras down from the shelf. He read the Gemara to the boy. He explained it. He explained it again. They discussed it, He asked questions. He gave answers. He kept on going, sweetly and patiently until the boy began to understand and appreciate what he was learning. The more he learned the more he enjoyed. When Rav Shach was satisfied that the young boy had experienced that taste of Torah he finally dismissed him. Now he had something to strive toward. He had something to look forward too. This is our job and responsibility for the next generation. It is where we need to put our energy. Yaacov lived a hundred and forty seven years, but his legacy is his concern for the future. In fact, the Medrash tells us that Yaacov Avinu Lo Meis. Yaacov never really died. He planted the seeds of Judaism of the next generation. Whether we are talking about physical health or spiritual wellbeing, our children or children who we can inspire, our energy needs to go toward the next generation.
