Student Handout 15A.1 After weeks of study, this voter has made up her mind on the issues. She is now casting her ballot in favor of the party she believes best represents the values she holds dear. I know no safe depository of the ultimate powers of society but the people themselves; and if we think them not enlightened enough to exercise their control with a wholesome discretion, the remedy is not to take it from them, but to inform their discretion by education. Thomas Jefferson, in a letter to William C. Jarvis, 1820 We, the people, are the boss, and we will get the kind of political leadership, be it good or bad, that we demand and deserve. John F. Kennedy, Profiles in Courage, 1955 Where annual elections end, there slavery begins. John Adams, Thoughts on Government, 1776 32 Activity 15

Student Handout 15A.2 Here people wait in line to claim governmentsubsidized apartments. The government seeks to meet the basic needs of all people. Every citizen receives free education, free medical services, organized vacations, and a pension. Working parents receive access to day-care centers for small children. From each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs! Karl Marx, Critique of the Gotha Program, 1875 Poverty curtails [restricts] individual freedom. So do illiteracy, prejudice, lack of education, [and] inability to obtain the basic needs of life. Hubert H. Humphrey, The Cause Is Mankind, 1964 The first man who, having enclosed a piece of land, took it into his head to say, This is mine, and found people simple enough to believe him, was the true founder of civil society. The human race would have been spared endless crimes, wars, murders, and horrors if someone had pulled up the stakes or filled in the ditch and cried out to his fellow man, Do not listen to this imposter! You are lost if you forget that the fruits of the earth belong to everyone, and the earth to no one! Jean Jacques Rousseau, Discourse on the Origin of Inequality, 1752 Contrasting Cold War Terms 33

Student Handout 15A.3 Ernie owns this store. He buys merchandise from several large corporations and then decides what the price will be when he resells it to his customers. He invests his earnings in any way he chooses. Ernie owns only this one store and fears that he may one day go out of business due to stiff competition from larger corporations. Of all human powers operating on the affairs of mankind, none is greater than that of competition. Henry Clay, On the American System, 1832 Agriculture, manufactures, commerce, and navigation, the four pillars of our prosperity, are the most thriving when left most free to individual enterprise. Thomas Jefferson, in his first annual message to Congress, December 8, 1801 Property is the fruit of labor property is desirable is a positive good in the world. That some should be rich, shows that others may become rich, and hence is just encouragement to industry and enterprise. Let not him who is houseless pull down the house of another; but let him labor diligently and build one for himself, thus by example assuring that his own shall be safe from violence when built. Abraham Lincoln, reply to the New York Workingmen s Democratic Republican Association, March 21, 1864 34 Activity 15

Student Handout 15A.4 A student looks in dismay at the C she received in English on her report card. She competed against the other 24 members of her class in ten essay-writing contests throughout the year, but was never able to get ranked higher than seventh place. If you work hard and play by the rules you should be given a chance to go as far as your God-given ability will take you. Bill Clinton, in a speech to the Democratic Leadership Council, December 3, 1993 With an idea, determination, and the right tools, you can do great things. Let your instincts, your intellect, and your heart guide you.... Anything is possible. Apple Computer advertisement Those who really desire to attain independence, have only to set their minds upon it, and adopt the proper means, as they do in regard to any other object which they wish to accomplish, and the thing is easily done. P. T. Barnum, The Art of Money Getting, 1882 Contrasting Cold War Terms 35

Student Handout 15A.5 This is a large farm made up of land from many smaller ones. The farmers work together in groups for the good of all. Part of their crop goes to the government. The farmers share the money earned from selling the rest. Here we have the chance, with the larger community, to make conditions for more hopeful human living together. By helping each other in the tasks of daily life and striving for better exchange, there comes more time. And with that, more freedom for creation. member of the Folk Art Guild in Rochester, New York Our vision is that... of a self-sufficient community: an environment where people from different backgrounds can live together and learn about each other: where members can unfold their creative energies within themselves in an atmosphere of love, joy, and wisdom. handout from Renaissance Community in Gill, Massachusetts I must admit that I personally measure success in terms of the contributions an individual makes to her or his fellow human beings. Margaret Mead, Margaret Mead: Some Personal Views, 1979 36 Activity 15

Student Handout 15A.6 This is a truck factory in which the hours of work, wages, and production targets are all mandated by the government. This factory, like most other productive property, is owned by the state. The people may go into business for themselves, but they may not hire anyone to work for them. To hire an employee would be to exploit that person s labor. The world is a raft sailing through space with, potentially, plenty of provisions for everybody; the idea that we must all cooperate and see to it that everyone does his fair share of the work and gets his fair share of the provisions, seems so blatantly obvious that one would say that no one could possibly fail to accept it unless he had some corrupt motive for clinging to the present system. George Orwell, The Road to Wigan Pier, 1937 The economic basis of socialism is social ownership of the means of production; its political basis is the power of the toiling masses under the leadership of the working class, headed by the... party. Socialism, Great Soviet Encyclopedia, 1980 [Socialism] would have society as a whole provide against all the trials and disasters of life. Are wages in any industry unreasonable low? It would have the government raise them. Are any able-bodied persons unemployed? The state shall employ them.... Are there any sick, disabled, or old people who cannot support themselves? Society as a whole shall support them. Charles W. Eliot, The Conflict Between Individualism and Collectivism in a Democracy, 1967 Contrasting Cold War Terms 37

Student Handout 15A.7 This is an official from the central government who closely monitors the daily activities of the people. Since the revolution, the state has become allpowerful and dominates almost every aspect of people s lives. It denies people political rights and civil liberties. The enemies of socialism are unwilling to give up attempts to undermine the... system.... They are striving to erode and impair [it].... All this, unfortunately, is an inseparable part of the reality of the stern world in which we live. For this reason, we must even now show high vigilance and take the necessary measures to render harmless the subversive [rebellious] intrigues of socialism s enemies. Yuri Andropov, Communist Sense of Conviction Is a Great Force of the Builders of the New World, September 9, 1977 Any man more right than his neighbors constitutes a majority of one. Henry David Thoreau, Resistance to Civil Government, 1849 In every society some men are born to rule, and some to advise. Ralph Waldo Emerson, The Young American, February 7, 1844 The people are turbulent and changing; they seldom judge or determine right. Alexander Hamilton, June 19, 1787, quoted in Notes of the Secret Debates of the Federal Convention of 1787 38 Activity 15

Student Handout 15A.8 This man is selling newspapers that carry articles giving widely different versions of a court decision. Some of the articles emphasize that the judge s ruling goes against all previous rulings, while others argue that the ruling will finally reverse the downward trend in the nation s morality. The papers editorials differ even more. Give me liberty or give me death! Patrick Henry, in a speech at the Virginia House of Burgesses, March 23, 1775 Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, in order to assure the survival and the success of liberty. This much we pledge and more. John F. Kennedy, in his inaugural presidential address, January 20, 1961 A society that puts equality... ahead of freedom will end up with neither equality nor freedom. Milton and Rose D. Friedman, Free to Choose, 1980 Contrasting Cold War Terms 39
