Important On the Money! This power point presenta5on is for educa5onal purposes. It may contain copyrighted material. Please do not post, redistribute or copy without the permission of the American Ins5tute for History Educa5on. Anthony Fitzpatrick The American Ins5tute for History Educa5on On the Money: Teaching US History at the drop of a dime Materials that can introduce students to large historical events in American and World History are closer than you think... (or I guess not- so- close at 5mes... Hhmmmm) What s in your wallet? Mine doesn t have anything in it either. Stop looking through my bag! But let s try something quick Who has change? (I also take large bills) Quick and Easy One way to engage the meaning of money is simply by dealing with the persons depicted on it. This is the simplest form of the applica5on. Combined with SPEECH it can inspire some fun ac5vi5es. Face Value Lets consider some facts about the money in this room using and SPEECH. Have students name 1-10 things about the face on the coin. Then categorize and explain them via SPEECH. 1 thing about Washington 2 things about Adams 3 things about Jefferson Eisenhower Silver Dollar 1

Make some change: (over 5me) Big Assignment huh? Use two denomina5ons: Example: James Monroe and John Kennedy. How did foreign rela5ons CHANGE between their presidencies? If you focus too much on the minu5a it s nearly an impossible task in a school year or lesson. Have the students focus on the BIG EVENTS. Then you can spiral deeper into the content as needed. What are the big foreign policy endeavors in between the two? Then we can make a generalized statement about where we started and where we ended. HEY (first) LADIES Get funky! The First First Lady of... One of the BEST things to be produced in recent years is the collec5on of First Wives coins. This isn t the OFFICIAL list of first ladies mind you but rather wives YES there is a difference. Remembering who? And who did she remember? 2

Buchanan s Liberty? Is there a clue to this W? (Why) You re only limited by the speed at which the coins (or images) are produced. OR NOT... For those of you that teach modern American History have your students create the coin images using similar criteria for the earlier figures. Only the future can give you a grade on that. OK maybe not but predic5ons can be fun. Let s Give it a Try Since we re talking about the West, Expansion, and the Great Depression let s see if we can inves5gate these topics. Pick the most significant person, topic, event, place, document and draw a coin depic5ng your interpreta5on of your selec5on. Don t worry, I won t judge you on your artwork. So you just selected one event or idea and decided that it was the most iconic or representa5ve of that person or event. I think I just tricked you into developing a thesis statement. Hmmmm 15 16 I wait for the day... What about using the back of bills to unlock some history? 3

The $2 Bill the most misunderstood denomina5on in the country. And maybe the most interes5ng The Lincoln Memorial Well what do we have here? this is a favorite find... The reverse... A visit from Columbia: More famous here but we can connect the themes. 4

The US Treasury so unhappy they replaced the old on... Loving the car on the back of the bill. JANUS anyone? The White House Independence Hall DeSoto discovering the Mississippi 1541 (The Desoto version was replaced by this ggrrrr) 5

No points for crea5vity George Washington resigns his commission. The Embarka5on of the Pilgrims A boy can dream... Currency that was reserved for exchange between banks. Let s Face the Facts no5ce anything unusual? Let s inves5gate shall we? What sort of things could I look for on the bill that would give me some clues? Let s talk: 6

Maybe you d like to talk about the importance of women in history? Or the most important year in our history...this is just a vanity slide. Na5ve Americans Westward Expansion And SPEECH- able Teachable Moments: State (and territory) Quarters 7

Washington Crossing the Delaware To the Crossroads of the West Aren t you a peach? What big historical event can be found on this coin? American imperialism and emergence in the world... Let s White Out a State Quarter: 8

Ohio!!!! Enter into an economics unit... What was considered wealthy in 1929? 1939? 1946? 1983? 2010 The current value of old money - click me :) Are we living in a material world? In this 1985 the ar5st Madonna sang about money. Who was the President in 1985? What was the na5onal debt? Unemployment? World History Teachers... You re certainly not lem out. The EURO has na5onal designa5ons Older paper currency images can be found as well! OK Here is a reference sec5on for you... I m going to run through all of the bills now. Hold on 5ght Don t make a move for the screen the money isn t real I already tried We get through what we can the pressure is now off but there is some NEAT stuff in here... A Penny Saved... 9
