The Church called George Billingslea to be its first pastor in 1982, and moved to its present location in Garden Ridge in 1989. In 1996, the Church built its Education Building and acquired additional land, resulting in the present 20 acre campus. The Church had grown to about 800 attendees by 2004, when Pastor Billingslea retired, and Dr. Lybrand replaced him in 2005. Under Dr. Lybrand s guidance, the church has continued to develop, the Church dedicated its new Early Childhood Center and Student Building in 2008. Dr. Lybrand retired from the pastorate in December of 2009. After a 9 month search, Drew Leaver was called to lead as new senior pastor in October of 2010. The Master Plan shows the build out of the current campus with a 1000-1200 seat Auditorium to be built in the future. ENVIRONMENT AND CULTURE Growth NEBC is in one of the fastest growing areas of the greater San Antonio area, and is a key position to minister to the surrounding community. Posturing the Church and developing the staff to meet the quickly-changing ministry needs of the community as the church continues to grow is the greatest challenge this church will face. As a result the church culture is growing younger creating a need to creatively engage the next generation of unbeliever, believer and leader with the gospel and kingdom mission. Shift Having a nearly 30 year history provides both foundational stability as well as need for continued cultural renewal to reach the next generation. The church as would be expected has been typically focused within for discipleship and programming. The future will involve leading this body outside the church walls to make a missional impact in the community. Over the past year the leadership embarked on a journey to discover the unique vision call for NEBC into the future. After much prayer and study a new mission statement and values were rolled out in Fall of 2011. This brings the excitement and challenge of change. The Student Ministry to the next generation of believers will be an important part of this process. Transition Due to its accessibility to Randolph AFB, about one-quarter of the attendees are military members who want to plug in quickly and get involved in ministry. With the military rotations, the church is re-vitalized each year as military leave and new military members transition in. The attendees range from young to old, with most of the couples in the church being young (25-40 years old) with two to three children. This makes for a fast-paced, exciting ministry environment. Northeast serves at least 5 different public school districts, 4 Christian schools and many home school families. Reaching this diverse community is unique and challenging. A key value that will influence this process is a missional heart for the community around us. We want to developed and mobilize students into the leaders who will reach the next lost generation. 4
