WHO WE ARE WELCOME to Pioneer This week we celebrated the 4th of July. It was a great day, the weather was perfect, just hot enough to be summer but not so hot that we had to move farther north. It is always a reminder in the midst of the food, family, and fireworks that we are celebrating freedoms that many do not have. The freedom that came with our independence is worthy of celebration. So this morning we welcome you to Pioneer Memorial Church to celebrate with us. Every Sabbath is a celebration of the freedom that we have in Christ. Every Sabbath is a reminder of the eternal rest that is yet to come. So as we celebrate this morning, let us look forward to the glorious day when we will once and for all be free from sin and its pain. This will be the independence day that will be celebrated for eternity. PIONEER LIFE KEEPING US SAFE BY RICHARD PARKE W hen we are very young, we always know we are safe when with our parents. In the eyes of a child, parents are our heroes the knights in shining armor! Even as adults, there s just something about being with your parents that makes you feel safe. When we get older, we rely on what we ve learned to keep us safe, as well as the safety plans in place when we enter a building. The Safety Team here at Pioneer has been working over the past several months to provide a safer place to worship and enjoy community together. Thanks to your generous support, we have recently completed an update to our fire alarm system, featuring building-wide paging and immediate communication with local safety officials. This new system tells us where an alarm was activated, allowing us to pinpoint the location of concern. This in turn allows us to determine with better certainty the severity of and response to an activated alarm. PMC EMERGENCY PROCEDURES The Safety Team is currently preparing a safety guide that will be placed in each room. The guide will provide resources for leaders to help you stay safe. In addition to the guide, maps will be posted on the wall in each room, indicating the location of alarm pull stations, fire extinguishers, and exit routes. TRAINING AND DRILLS Training will be offered to our leaders in preparation for an emergency and evacuation. A drill will be scheduled following the training to simulate an evacuation. The goal is to have the fire drill sometime before the start of the new school year in the fall. SABBATH MORNING SAFETY OFFICER During our Sabbath morning worship hours a Safety Officer is identified (typically someone on our deacon team). In the event of an evacuation or shelter in place, please follow the instructions provided. EVACUATION PROCEDURE 1-2-3 In the event a fire alarm is activated or the audible paging system tells you to evacuate, follow these three instructions: 1. Remain calm. 2. Locate the nearest exit, leave your belongings, and exit the building. 3. Follow instructions from the safety team and do not re-enter the building until told to do so. If an evacuation is needed during church, you can also direct your attention to the screens for evacuation procedures. A fire drill will be scheduled sometime before school starts. See Exit Plan on facing page. Richard Parke is the chair of the Safety Committee, and director of Media Ministries here at PMC. SUPPORT THIS MINISTRY Please indicate "Building Improvements" on your tithe envelope. 4 PIONEER MEMORIAL CHURCH

Widor PRESIDING PASTOR: Ben Martin; ORGANIST: Joshua Goines WORSHIP IN MUSIC: Karin Thompson, cello MUSIC ALIVE ELOQUENT AND LYRICAL T he voice of the cello is the rich underpinning of the traditional string quartet (with the "double bass" pitched lower). But today's Worship in Music allows the listener to encounter the cello as a solo instrument. And a voice both eloquent and lyrical it is. The music, in a version adapted here as a stand-alone piece for cello and keyboard instrument, is also found in Bach's Cantata No. 156, which has a very unusual name: "I Stand With One Foot in the Grave," where it is an oboe solo accompanied by instruments (ending differently than does today's adaptation). But technicalities aside, this music gives the listener an opportunity to reflect on the grandeur of simplicity: a lovely solo accompanied by a Spartan framework of bass and harmonies.
