Living Lent As People of the Resurrection Good Friday Passion Peace Lutheran Church March 25, 2016 Welcome to Peace Lutheran Church a special welcome to our guests! This evening we remember a holy night in the history of the world the night our Savior bled and died on a cross for our salvation. This is a night of reflection on the bitter suffering our Lord endured, that He might deliver us from evil. May we all know why this terrible day is called good! Please take some time during worship to fill out the attendance/prayer card, located at the end of each pew. If you are a guest, we would love to receive contact information so we can respond to your visit with us today. CONVERGING - We come together to worship our Lord. P: We gather to participate in the ancient Tenebrae service, the service of darkness. C: The candles will be gradually extinguished to remind us of the gathering darkness around Jesus as he moved through his passion to his death. Opening Song Jesus Messiah by Tomlin, Carson, Cash, and Reeves (As we sing the opening song, please pass your attendance / prayer card to the ushers. If you are a firsttime guest, please provide your contact information so that we can respond to your visit this week.) CELEBRATING - We rejoice in what our Lord has done for us. P: I invite you now to come and celebrate the presence of our God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. C: We come as we are. Some of us had to rush to get here. Some of us have difficulty settling down. Some of us are troubled and in the midst of trials. Some of us feel rather empty. P: Whoever you are, however you came, whatever you are thinking or feeling, God welcomes you with his loving care. C: We are ready to remember our Lord s passion.

CONFESSING - We ask forgiveness for the ways we have strayed from the Lord. P: We pause to make confession of our sins, joining the psalmist in his prayer: C: Have mercy on me, O God; blot out my transgressions; cleanse me from my sin; hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation. Amen. CONTRIBUTING - We give of ourselves to the Lord in return for what the Lord has given to us. OFFERING SONG Instrumental CD (In response to His gracious, daily provision, as an act of adoration and praise, we joyfully give back a portion of what our Lord has entrusted to us. If you are a first time guest please do not feel obligated to contribute but you may do so as the Holy Spirit leads. May God bless every sacrifice we bring!) CONVERSING - God speaks to us through his Word and we respond in word and song. Message Song Were You There Message Apostles Creed Pastor: Let us acknowledge our faith by the words of the Apostles Creed: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

First Reading Luke 22:47-53 (The first candle is extinguished.) Second Reading Luke 22:54-62 (The second candle is extinguished.) Third Reading Luke 22:63-65 (The third candle is extinguished.) Fourth Reading Luke 22:66-71 (The fourth candle is extinguished.) Fifth Reading Luke 23:1-25 (The fifth candle is extinguished.) Sixth Reading Luke 23:26-49 (The sixth candle is extinguished.) Seventh Reading Luke 23:50-56 (The seventh candle is extinguished and the Christ Candle is removed.) COMMUNING - We bond with the Lord in prayer. Prayers P: Praise to you, O Lord, for your wondrous cross. C: Assist us as we look to the cross for forgiveness and salvation. P: Save us from the curse of sin, the sting of death and the clutches of hell. C: Save us from our selfishness and self-centeredness for a life of service. P: Instill in us the very thought that we were there at the cross. C: Open our ears to hear the words of Jesus from the cross. P: Now is the time to thank the Lord for his passion. C: Amen.

Lord s Prayer CONCLUDING - We honor the crucified Christ and go forth in anticipation of the Lord s resurrection. The Christ Candle Is Returned Closing Song When I Survey the Wondrous Cross by Isaac Watts The SENDING of GOD S PEOPLE P: GO IN PEACE Connect, Celebrate, and Serve the Lord! Let all the people say: C: Amen! (Psalm 106:48) We leave the sanctuary in silence, following the Christ Candle out into the world. Permission for all lyrics used during worship CCLI # 2647991 Copies of song lyrics are available upon request from the church office. Good Friday 2017 Invocation: Opening song: Jesus Messiah

Responses from Isaiah 52:13-53;12 P: My servant will succeed! He will be given great praise and the highest honors. Many were horrified at what happen to him. But everyone saw him was even more horrified because he suffered until he no longer looked human. My servant will make nations worthy to worship me; kings will be silent as they bow in wonder. They will see and think about things they have never seen or thought about before. Has anyone believed us or seen the mighty power of the Lord in action? C: Like a young plant or a root that sprouts in dry ground, the servant grew up obeying the Lord. P: He wasn t a handsome king. Nothing about the way he looked made him attractive to us. C: He was hated and rejected; his life was filled with sorrow and terrible suffering. P: No one wanted to look at him. We despised him and said, He is a nobody! He suffered and endured great pain for us, but we thought his suffering was punishment from God. C: He was wounded and crushed because of our sins; by taking our punishment, he made us completely well.

P: All of us were like sheep that had wandered off. C: We had each gone our own way, P: but the Lord gave him the punishment we deserved. He was painfully abused, but he did not complain. C: He was silent like a lamb being led to the butcher, as quiet as a sheep having its wool cut off. P: He was condemned to death without a fair trial. Who would have imagined what would happen to him? C: His life was taken away because of the sinful things my people had done. P: He wasn t dishonest or violent, but he was buried in a tomb of cruel and rich people. The Lord decided his servant would suffer as a sacrifice to take away the sin and guilt of others. C: Now the servant will live to see his own descendants. He did everything the Lord had planned. P: By suffering, the servant will learn the true meaning of obeying the Lord.

C: Although he is innocent, he will take the punishment for the sins of others, so many of them will no longer be guilty. The Lord will reward him with honor and power for sacrificing his life. P: Others thought he was a sinner, but he suffered for our sins and asked God to forgive us. Song: Grace Flows Down Old Testament Reading Psalm 31 New Testament Reading Romans 5:6-8 Responsive Reading..Hosea 6:1-3 P: Come, Let us return to the Lord; for it is he who has torn, and he will heal us. C: He has struck down, and he will bind us up. P: After two days he will revive us; on the third day he will raise us up, that we may live before him.

C: Let us know, let us press on to know the Lord. P: His appearing is as sure as the dawn. C: He will come to us like the showers, like the spring rains that water the earth.
