Ecclesiastes 3:3 A Campaign to Restore & Expand Holy Cross Church Holy Cross Parish Rumson, New Jersey HOLY_CROSS_TIME_TO_CHANGE_2.indd 1 12/21/11 11:05:18 AM

Our Mission Parishioners of Holy Cross take strength and joy from the Eucharist and strive to follow in Jesus footsteps, spreading His message of love and truth to everyone around us. We cherish our faith and form younger generations in the same faith, encouraging all to join us and share in the joy and peace of Christ s loving care. We are grateful for the time, treasure and talent we have been given by those who have gone before us and pray that they enjoy the peace of the heavenly kingdom. Now it is our turn to keep the flame of faith alive here at Holy Cross and ensure it burns brightly for more generations to come. HOLY_CROSS_TIME_TO_CHANGE_2.indd 2-3 12/21/11 11:05:19 AM

Our Campaign In order to create space for our growing parish family, provide for our many ministries, and better fulfill our mission; we are now embarking on a capital campaign to raise a minimum of $4,000,000. This effort will require prayer, hard work and generosity. Our History In 1883 Bishop Michael J. O Farrell commissioned the Reverend John H. Fox, then assigned to St. Joseph s Church in Bound Brook, to establish a new parish for the growing community in Sea Bright and Rumson. After praying mass for several months in a hotel in Sea Bright, it wasn t long before Fr. Fox encouraged the parishioners to build a church, and the newly built Holy Cross Church welcomed worshippers in 1886. In 1941, a parish school was founded in an adjacent mansion purchased by the parish. Quite soon the school outgrew its nest, so in 1954, the parish constructed a new school building, which was expanded in 1962, and again in 2006. The generosity of our parish community has been demonstrated many times. The success of the capital campaign in 2002 showed the vitality, generosity and determination of the parish community. With a goal of $5,000,000, parishioners pledged $5,765,464. A pre-construction audit by the diocese uncovered financial irregularities, though it turned out the funds in the capital fund were safe. Even in the wake of the sad disclosures to follow, the need for the project was appreciated. Plans were divided into Phase I for the school and Phase II for the church. The scope of the school project was enlarged to include modern technology, a new library, a science lab, a media room and a permanent stage in the gym. School construction began along with a second capital campaign in 2005 to help fund the upgraded building plans. Before, during and after construction on the school, planning for Phase II church construction continued. Many years of prayer, preparation and patience have brought us to the threshold of this exciting project. Holy Cross is a vibrant community numbering 2,400 families. We continue to be blessed with an outstanding school where over 400 students receive the finest Catholic education. Our religious education program thrives with almost 600 young people receiving religious instruction. Architectural Rendering of the Nave HOLY_CROSS_TIME_TO_CHANGE_2.indd 4-5 12/21/11 11:05:23 AM

A Complete Renovation & Expansion of the Church In its present condition Holy Cross Church requires millions of dollars in renovations. This project will not only restore the church but will also address the need for more seating. Currently, the church accommodates two-hundred twenty (220) people and as a result, we must celebrate two weekend masses in the gymatorium, which is not a sacred setting for the celebration of the Eucharist. Once complete, our church will have a seating capacity of six-hundred forty-eight (648). This will allow our entire community to worship in a more sacred setting each Sunday, and during other important events, such as First Communions, making the need for Mass is the gymatorium a rarity. The interior of the church will include: New Altar Interior A Rod: A Suspended Three Dimensional Image of the Crucifixion between the Nave and the Sanctuary New Lectern Three Rose Windows; Two in the Transept and One at the Narthex New Baptismal Font Meeting Space in the Church Basement for Hospitality Entries Accessible to the Handicapped Soundproof Vestibules in the Transepts Upgraded Heat and Air Conditioning New Sound System The View from Ward Avenue Space for Gatherings, Fellowship and Prayer The View from the Soccer Field Our parish is a vibrant community with active ministries and organizations that regularly gather to grow in fellowship and faith. Our plans provide a meeting room for these groups and will also offer additional space for our parish family to gather for social interaction. We will also be enhancing the utility of the space around the church for outdoor activities, prayer and hospitality. Our parish is blessed with beautiful grounds and through this project we will be in a position to better utilize them as a community and for individual prayer. A prayer garden adjacent to the church for group and individual prayer and reflection, a fountain, outdoor statues and other improvements enhance the spiritual environment around the church. Preserved Interior and Exterior Spirit When a church undergoes a major renovation, there is often a concern that the resulting structure will be unrecognizable. One of the most important aspects of this project is the preservation of the current building s architectural integrity. The entire façade on Ward Avenue will remain intact. And although it is expanding in size, the interior of the church will retain the spirit that has made Holy Cross such a special place of worship for so many. This will be accomplished through the preservation of architectural form of the interior space. This will maintain the intimate and spiritual presence of our church. Our beautiful Holy Cross window will be restored and retained. Exterior The exterior improvements around the church include: Entry Garden Stone Fountain New Wood Pergola A Marian Garden New Statuary around the Church Refurbished and elocated Crucifixion Shrine Increased Handicapped Parking South Elevation Garden Perspective Garden Perspective HOLY_CROSS_TIME_TO_CHANGE_2.indd 8-9 12/21/11 11:05:34 AM
