THE CONVERSIONS IN ACTS SERIES - Lesson Three Conversion of the Ethiopian - How To Become A Christian - Acts 8:26-40 Intro: A. How does one become a Christian? ---- When you ask this question of men - you will get many different answers. You may find that many will say: 1. (You can t) The Holy Spirit has to regenerate you - 2. Just trust that Jesus died for your sins 3. Pray the sinners prayer - a. Confess you re a sinner b. Ask Jesus to come into your heart c. The Prayer might go something like this from the First Baptist church: (1) "Lord Jesus, I know that I am a sinner and I do not deserve eternal life. But, I believe You died and rose from the grave to purchase a place in Heaven for me. Jesus, come into my life, take control of my life, forgive my sins and save me. I am now placing my trust in You alone for my salvation and I accept your free gift of eternal life." (2) I am yet to find a passage of scripture for such a prayer! B. This morning we want to focus not on the opinions of men or the doctrines of denominations - we want to inquire of the Lord and appeal to the Scriptures to find out exactly what the Lord wants us to do C. Acts 8:26-40 (NKJV) ---- 26 Now an angel of the Lord spoke to Philip, saying, Arise and go toward the south along the road which goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza. This is desert. 27 So he arose and went. And behold, a man of Ethiopia, a eunuch of great authority under Candace the queen of the Ethiopians, who had charge of all her treasury, and had come to Jerusalem to worship, 28 was returning. And sitting in his chariot, he was reading Isaiah the prophet. 29 Then the Spirit said to Philip, Go near and overtake this chariot. 30 So Philip ran to him, and heard him reading the prophet Isaiah, and said, Do you understand what you are reading? 31 And he said, How can I, unless someone guides me? And he asked Philip to come up and sit with him. 32 The place in the Scripture which he read was this: He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; And as a lamb before its shearer is silent, So He opened not His mouth. 33 In His humiliation His justice was taken away, And who will declare His generation? For His life is taken from the earth. 34 So the eunuch answered Philip and said, I ask you, of whom does the prophet say this, of himself or of some other man? 35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning at this Scripture, preached Jesus to him. 36 Now as they went down the road, they came to some water. And the eunuch said, See, here is water. What hinders me from being baptized? 37 Then Philip said, If you believe with all your heart, you may. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. 38 So he commanded the chariot to stand still. And both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water, and he baptized him. 39 Now when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught Philip away, so that the eunuch saw him no more; and he went on his way rejoicing. 40 But Philip was found at Azotus. And passing through, he preached in all the cities till he came to Caesarea. ---- this is the account of Phillip and the Ethiopian Eunuch and his conversion. 1. As we look at a brief analysis of this text we see: a. Verses 26-29 Phillip instructed by an angel and the Holy Spirit - b. Verses 30-35 Phillip preaches Christ to the Ethiopian from the OT scripture (Is. 53) c. Verses 36-39 The Ethiopian responds to the preaching of Phillip by believing and obeying the gospel. 2. What we see is the direct involvement of the angel and the Holy Spirit: Page 1 of 6

a. Verse 26 an angel of the Lord spoke to Philip, arise and go... b. Verse 29 Then the Spirit said to Philip, Go near and overtake... c. No direct operation upon the one being converted vss 30,31,34-37 d. The Spirit worked through the message preached vs 35; 1 Cor. 1:18 (NKJV) ---- 18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. D. Let us notice the Characters of this account: 1. Philip Acts 6:5; 8:5-13 2. Ethiopian Eunuch Acts 8:26-40 3. The Holy Spirit John 14:26; 15:26; 16:7-14; 1 Cor. 2:10-13; Eph. 3:3-5 a. John 14:26 (NKJV) ---- 26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. b. John 15:26 (NKJV) ---- 26 But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me. c. John 16:7-14 (NKJV) ---- 7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. 8 And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9 of sin, because they do not believe in Me; 10 of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; 11 of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. 12 I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. 14 He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. d. 1 Corinthians 2:10-13 (NKJV) ---- 10 But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. 11 For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God. 12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God. 13 These things we also speak, not in words which man s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual. e. Ephesians 3:3-5 (NKJV) ---- 3 how that by revelation He made known to me the mystery (as I have briefly written already, 4 by which, when you read, you may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ), 5 which in other ages was not made known to the sons of men, as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to His holy apostles and prophets: 4. Angel Acts 10:3; Heb 1:4,6 a. Acts 10:3 (NKJV) ---- 3 About the ninth hour of the day he saw clearly in a vision an angel of God coming in and saying to him, Cornelius! b. Hebrews 1:4 (NKJV) ---- 4 having become so much better than the angels, as He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they. c. Hebrews 1:6 (NKJV) ---- 6 But when He again brings the firstborn into the world, He says: Let all the angels of God worship Him. E. What we know of the the Ethiopian Eunuch 1. An honorable man vs. 27 2. A religious man vs. 27 3. A truth seeker vs. 28 4. A humble man vs. 30,31,34 5. A ready man vs. 36 Page 2 of 6

6. A convicted man vs. 37 7. An obedient man vs. 38 8. A joyful man vs. 39 9. The journey he undertook was approx 1000 miles. a. Shows his commitment to serving God! II. Notice the things that did not happen in this account: A. No direct operation of the Holy Spirit! 1. Angel did NOT preach 2. Not told to tell experience 3. Not told to pray 4. Not voted on 5. Not told to confess being a sinner - 6. Not told to join a denomination 7. Not sprinkled - B. Errors Refuted in this text are: 1. No Direct operation of the Holy Spirit upon the heart of the sinner? (30-37; John 16:13; Acts 2;3;8:12,13; 1 Cor. 1:18-23) a. John 16:13 (NKJV) ---- 13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. b. Acts 8:12 (NKJV) ---- 12 But when they believed Philip as he preached the things concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were baptized. (1) Acts 8:13 (NKJV) ---- 13 Then Simon himself also believed; and when he was baptized he continued with Philip, and was amazed, seeing the miracles and signs which were done. c. 1 Corinthians 1:18-23 (NKJV) ---- 18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 19 For it is written: I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, And bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent. 20 Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the disputer of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? 21 For since, in the wisdom of God, the world through wisdom did not know God, it pleased God through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe. 22 For Jews request a sign, and Greeks seek after wisdom; 23 but we preach Christ crucified, to the Jews a stumbling block and to the Greeks foolishness, 2. Holy Spirit must directly enlighten one in order for them to understand the scriptures? (31,35; Psa. 119:97-104; Acts 17:11,12; Eph. 5:17; 3:3-5) a. Psalm 119:97-104 (NKJV) ---- 97 Oh, how I love Your law! It is my meditation all the day. 98 You, through Your commandments, make me wiser than my enemies; For they are ever with me. 99 I have more understanding than all my teachers, For Your testimonies are my meditation. 100 I understand more than the ancients, Because I keep Your precepts. 101 I have restrained my feet from every evil way, That I may keep Your word. 102 I have not departed from Your judgments, For You Yourself have taught me. 103 How sweet are Your words to my taste, Sweeter than honey to my mouth! 104 Through Your precepts I get understanding; Therefore I hate every false way. b. Acts 17:11 (NKJV) ---- 11 These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so. (1) Acts 17:12 (NKJV) ---- 12 Therefore many of them believed, and also not a few of the Page 3 of 6

Greeks, prominent women as well as men. c. Ephesians 5:17 (NKJV) ---- 17 Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is. d. Ephesians 3:3-5 (NKJV) ---- 3 how that by revelation He made known to me the mystery (as I have briefly written already, 4 by which, when you read, you may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ), 5 which in other ages was not made known to the sons of men, as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to His holy apostles and prophets: 3. Baptism not being a part of the gospel? (35; Matt. 28:18-20; Mark 16:16; Acts 8:12,13; 1 Cor. 15:29) a. Matthew 28:18-20 (NKJV) ---- 18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age. Amen. b. Mark 16:16 (NKJV) ---- 16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. c. Acts 8:12 (NKJV) ---- 12 But when they believed Philip as he preached the things concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were baptized. (1) Acts 8:13 (NKJV) ---- 13 Then Simon himself also believed; and when he was baptized he continued with Philip, and was amazed, seeing the miracles and signs which were done. d. 1 Corinthians 15:29 (NKJV) ---- 29 Otherwise, what will they do who are baptized for the dead, if the dead do not rise at all? Why then are they baptized for the dead? 4. Sprinkling for baptism? (38,39; Rom. 6:3,4; Col. 2:12) a. Romans 6:3 (NKJV) ---- 3 Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? (1) Romans 6:4 (NKJV) ---- 4 Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. b. Colossians 2:12 (NKJV) ---- 12 buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead. 5. Baptism is to enter a local church, [voting]? (Acts 2:41,47; Rom. 6:3; Gal. 3:26,27; 1 Cor. 12:13) a. Acts 2:41 (NKJV) ---- 41 Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them. b. Acts 2:47 (NKJV) ---- 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved. c. Romans 6:3 (NKJV) ---- 3 Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? d. Galatians 3:26 (NKJV) ---- 26 For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. (1) Galatians 3:27 (NKJV) ---- 27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. e. 1 Corinthians 12:13 (NKJV) ---- 13 For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free and have all been made to drink into one Spirit. III. Notice the things that did happen in this conversion... A. The gospel of Christ was preached Page 4 of 6

IV. B. The Ethiopian believed the gospel C. He changed religions D. He confessed Christ E. He was baptized F. He went on his way rejoicing - The Fact is the Eunuch was a Christian ONLY! A. The Ethiopian became a Christian! Acts 11:26 (NKJV) ---- 26 And when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. So it was that for a whole year they assembled with the church and taught a great many people. And the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch. B. Forgiven of his sins Acts 2:38; 22:16; Col. 2:11-13 1. Acts 2:38 (NKJV) ---- 38 Then Peter said to them, Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 2. Acts 22:16 (NKJV) ---- 16 And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord. 3. Colossians 2:11-13 (NKJV) ---- 11 In Him you were also circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the sins of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, 12 buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead. 13 And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, C. Saved Mark 16:16; 1 Peter 3:21 1. Mark 16:16 (NKJV) ---- 16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. 2. 1 Peter 3:21 (NKJV) ---- 21 There is also an antitype which now saves us baptism (not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, D. In Christ Rom 6:3-7; Acts 2:47; 1 Cor. 12:13 1. Romans 6:3-7 (NKJV) ---- 3 Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? 4 Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection, 6 knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. 7 For he who has died has been freed from sin. 2. Acts 2:47 (NKJV) ---- 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved. 3. 1 Corinthians 12:13 (NKJV) ---- 13 For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free and have all been made to drink into one Spirit.
