3461 Merle Ave Modesto, CA 95355 (209) 551-0563 www.stpetermodesto.org W The Festival of Pentecost MAY 15, 2016 elcome! Today we are celebrating the Christian festival of Pentecost. 50 days after Jesus rose from the dead he sent his Holy Spirit upon his disciples so that they boldly proclaimed the good news that Jesus has conquered sin and death. God still sends his Spirit on his people so that we too know Jesus and proclaim him as our Savior! The Lord s Supper (Holy Communion) The Bible tells us that those who take Communion together are to: Recognize that Christ s true body and blood are present in the Sacrament (1 Cor. 11:29), Examine themselves as Scripture instructs (1 Cor. 11:28), and Be one in faith and belief with the congregation with which they commune (1 Cor. 10:17). For these reasons, it is our practice that only those who are members of our congregation or a congregation of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS) join us for Holy Communion. If you are interested in learning more about becoming a member of our body of believers or want to find out more about our Communion practice please speak to Pastor Cortright after the service. PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP Lord God, I thank you for the gift of you Spirit whom you gave to your apostles on Pentecost and whom you continue to give to your people today. Send your Spirit into my heart as you come to me today in your Word. Fill me with a desire to live according to your will and to reach out in love to all people. Help me to see my baptism as the seal of the Spirit and the promise of greater gifts to come. Amen ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Flowers adorning our altar this morning are given to the glory of God by the Hejnal family in celebration of Dominic s birthday, by Melody Zuccaro in celebration of Donny s birthday and by the Mallory family in celebration of Paige s birthday. Minister: Pastor Ryan Cortright Pianist: Bob Fromuth

OPENING HYMN Come, Holy Ghost, Creator Blest Christian Worship #177 stanzas 1,4,5,6 CALL TO WORSHIP M: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. CONFESSION OF SINS M: Beloved in the Lord: let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God our Father, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord have mercy on me, a sinner. LORD, HAVE MERCY (KYRIE) ABSOLUTION M: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. We begin our service by confessing our sins and acknowledging our great need of God s grace and forgiveness. In our confession, we echo the words of the tax collector from Luke 18:13: God, have mercy on me, a sinner. Our confession also follows the pattern set for us in 1 John 1:8-9: If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 1

PRAYER AND PRAISE M: In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord. THE GLORIA 2

PRAYER OF THE DAY M: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. M: Let us pray. Holy Spirit, God and Lord, come to us this joyful day with your sevenfold gifts of grace. Rekindle in our hearts the holy fire of your love that in a true and living faith we may tell abroad the glory of our Savior, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Father, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. THE WORD OF GOD THE FIRST LESSON Joel 2:28-29 Through the prophet Joel God foretold of his sending of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. 28 29 And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days. 4

PSALM OF THE DAY Psalm 51b O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise. You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise. Refrain Create in me a pure heart O, God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me. Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will turn back to you. Glory be to the Father and to the Son And to the Holy Spirit, As it was in the beginning, Is now, and will be forever. Amen. Refrain 5

THE SECOND LESSON Acts 2:1-13 50 days after Jesus resurrection he sent his Holy Spirit on his disciples so that they could preach repentance and the forgiveness of sins in the name of Jesus. When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. 5 Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. 6 When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. 7 Utterly amazed, they asked: Are not all these men who are speaking Galileans? 8 Then how is it that each of us hears them in his own native language? 9 Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome 11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs-we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues! 12 Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, What does this mean? 13 Some, however, made fun of them and said, They have had too much wine. THE VERSE OF THE DAY Alleluia. Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful people, and kindle in them the fire of your love. Alleluia. Alleluia is a word that comes to us from Hebrew, the language of the Old Testament. It means Praise the Lord! The words of this song are from John 20:31. They remind us that the purpose of Scripture is to lead us to a knowledge and faith in Jesus Christ. 6

THE GOSPEL LESSON John 14:23-29 After the announcement of the Gospel, the congregation sings: J esus replied, If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. 24 He who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me. 25 All this I have spoken while still with you. 26 But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. 28 You heard me say, I am going away and I am coming back to you. If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. 29 I have told you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe. After the Gospel, the congregation sings: The dove is the Christian symbol for the Holy Spirit 7

THE THIRD ARTICLE OF THE APOSTLE S CREED WITH EXPLANATION We will read responsively the confession of faith for Pentecost Sunday. The congregation will speak with the pastor the portions printed in bold. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. What does this mean? I believe that I cannot by my own thinking or choosing believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to him. But the Holy Spirit has called me by the gospel, enlightened me with his gifts, sanctified and kept me in the true faith. In the same way he calls, gathers, enlightens, and sanctifies the whole Christian church on earth, and keeps it with Jesus Christ in the one true faith. In this Christian church he daily and fully forgives all sins to me and all believers. On the Last Day he will raise me and all the dead and give eternal life to me and all believers in Christ. This is most certainly true! THE HYMN OF THE DAY Oh, That I Had a Thousand Voices Christian Worship #194 stanzas 1,4,5 THE SERMON John 14:23-29 Don t Settle for Counterfeit Peace 8

Applying the Sermon How did this portion of Scripture expose my own sin? (Law) How did the sermon give me hope and show me God s love? (Gospel) As a baptized child of Christ, I want to THE RESPONSE 9

THANKSGIVING AND PRAYER THE OFFERING The members of St, Peter Congregation have joined together to do the Lord s work in this community and around the world. Guests at St. Peter are welcome to participate in the offering but need not feel obligated to do so. THE PRAYER OF THE CHURCH spoken by the minister THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. THE SACRAMENT St Peter Lutheran Church practices close communion. We invite confirmed members to come forward to partake of the Sacrament. Thank you for your consideration. M: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. M: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them up unto the Lord. M: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C: It is good and right so to do. M: It is truly good and right that we should at all times and in all places give you thanks, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who on this day kept his promise and poured out the Holy Spirit to empower his Church to proclaim the gospel in all the world. Therefore, with all the saints on earth and hosts of heaven, we praise your holy name and join in their glorious song: 10

HOLY, HOLY, HOLY (THE SANCTUS) THE WORDS OF INSTITUTION M: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat. This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink from it all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me. M: The peace of the Lord be with you always. C: Amen Christians having been singing the Sanctus (Latin for holy ) in worship for 1800 years. When we sing the Sanctus, we echo the words of the angels gathered around the throne of God (Isaiah 6:3). We sing holy, holy, holy, anticipating the day when we too will join with the angels and the saints in the presence of God. We also join in singing the praises of the crowds which greeted Jesus on Palm Sunday as he entered Jerusalem in kingly glory (Mark 11:9-10). This song prepares our hearts to meet our Lord in his supper. 11

O CHRIST, LAMB OF GOD (AGNUS DEI) DISTRIBUTION OF THE LORD S SUPPER During the distribution you are invited to join in singing the indicated hymns or to use the time for private prayer and meditation. Appropriate prayers are found on page 11 in the front of the hymnal. A personal preparation for the Lord s Supper is found on page 156. 12

DISTRIBUTION HYMNS Take and Eat Christian Worship Supplement #741 The verses will be sung by the chorus. The congregation is invited to join in singing the refrain. I am the Word that spoke and light was made; I am the seed that died to be reborn; I am the bread that comes from heav n above; I am the vine that fills your cup with joy. Refrain I am the way that leads the exile home; I am the truth that sets the captive free. I am the life that raises up the dead; I am your peace, true peace my gift to you. Refrain I am the Lamb that takes away your sin; I am the gate that guards you night and day. You are my flock: you know the Shepherd s voice: You are my own: your ransom is my blood. Refrain I am the cornerstone that God has laid, a chosen stone and precious in his eyes. You are God s dwelling place on me you rest; like living stones, a temple for God s praise. Refrain I am the Light that came into the world; I am the Light that darkness cannot hide; I am the Morning Star that never sets. Lift up your face; in you my light will shine. Refrain I am the First and Last, the living One; I am the Lord who died that you might live; I am the Bridegroom, this my wedding song. You are my bride; come to the marriage feast. SONG OF SIMEON THANKSGIVING M: O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. C: And his mercy endures forever. M: We give thanks, almighty God, that you have refreshed us with this Holy Supper. We pray that through it you will strengthen our faith in you and increase our love for one another. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen M: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look on you with favor and give you peace. C: Amen.
