ONFIRMATIO What is Confirmation? Through confirmation, your sons and daughters will be given the opportunity to be instructed in the Christian faith, confirm the baptismal covenant they entered into as an infant, and publicly affirm a living and personal faith in Jesus Christ. Confirmation is not a sacrament, nor is it commanded in the Bible. It is a privilege, not a right, and consists of a three year pastoral and educational ministry of our church that is designed to assist our baptized children identify with the life and mission of adulthood in the Christian church. Year one (Room C-104) Old Testament Year two (Room S-111C - Youth Room) Apostles Creed New Testament Year three (Room S-111W - Youth Room Cafe) Ten Commandments Lord s Prayer Baptism/Holy Communion Special Topics Oct 11 - Stairway to Heaven Nov 15 - Highway to Hell March 6 - God s Design for Sex April 10 - Faith of our Neighbors Our Mission: Knowing the Savior and Making Him Known Knowing ~ Growing ~ Going Our Objectives: 1) To present each young person with the truths of Christ and the Bible and permit him/her to confirm and testify to a personal belief in Jesus Christ as Lord. 2) To teach the basic fundamentals of the Christian faith and Biblical Christianity as set forth in Holy Scripture and explained in Luther s Small Catechism. 3) To study topics that will enrich their lives as Christians and assist them to mature in their faith and to equip them for service within the Church and community. 4) To develop within our young people Christian ideals, standards, and values in regard to Worship, Prayer, Bible study, Stewardship, and Fellowship. 5) To affirm within each student the privilege, blessing, and responsibility of partaking in Holy Communion. Why is Confirmation important? 1) Confirmation is important because of the material used and the instruction given. The Bible is our primary resource, which we supplement with the teaching of Luther s Small Catechism. Through the use of these materials students will come to a greater understanding of how God is working in their lives. They will show them the Law that convicts them of sin and also the Gospel that provides forgiveness for sin. 2) Confirmation is important because it takes place in the early teen years when many young people are beginning to wrestle with faith questions, doubts, and the assurance of salvation. Confirmation offers opportunity for working through these matters. 3) Confirmation is important because it celebrates the promises of baptism and helps the young individual begin to identify with and become involved in the adult Christian community. This team effort involves parents, pastors and staff, servant leaders, and the young adult. 4) Confirmation is important for its completion equips one to rightly partake of the Lord s Supper with our congregation. It is not a graduation from Christian education and growth, but a step along our journey of faith. KNOWING: Regular and timely attendance of our Sunday class, from 9:30am to10:45am. Completion of all lessons and memory work. Proficiency, understanding, and grasp of the materials covered in Confirmation. Your instructors will evaluate this based upon class attendance, participation, interaction, weekly lessons, and Celebration of Knowledge opportunities. Special topics presented by Pastor Kirk to further enhance concepts presented in the classroom setting. GROWING: Regular attendance at worship services with family. Completion of sermon notes for 24 Abiding Savior sermons from September to May. Advent and Lent sermons also qualify. GOING: Involvement in ten hours of volunteer service to either our church or community. Signatures of completion in service projects are required. Upon completion of all requirements, a recommendation for Confirmation will be submitted to Pastor and the congregation Student will prepare a written testimony and public profession of a personal faith in Jesus Christ upon completion of the third year of study. Parental Involvement In many ways, Confirmation presents a moment of decision for your family. Will this opportunity be one of priority and precedence, or will it be just another item to check off the list? Your own actions and example as parents will have huge bearing on the success or lack thereof regarding Confirmation. As parents, your role is absolutely vital! Your encouragements to complete all the lessons and assignments and to participate in class are essential to the success and impact of Confirmation in the life of your child. We recognize and affirm the home as the greatest place of teaching in the life of your child, yet acknowledge the partnership that exists between the home and our church family and the assistance we can offer in the equipping and training up of our young people to be the men and women God would desire them to be. Lessons are available both in class and at http://knowingthesavior.org/youth
