KING S COLLEGE CHAPEL SERVICES AND MUSIC EASTER AND LONG VACATION TERMS 2017

NOTICES SUND AY PREAC HERS TH IS TERM We welcome a number of visitors to preach this term. Professor Ian MacFarland, Regius Professor of Divinity, will give the Sermon before the University on Sunday 28 May. Mr Richard Noble (KC 1957) will speak at Matins on Sunday 7 May, basing his address on ideas in his book Writing on the Wall which explores many everyday phrases that derive from the Authorized Version of the Bible. On Sunday 21 May our preacher will be the Rector of St Andrew s, Girton, the Revd Dr Mandy Maxwell. We will hear from Dr Ruth Jackson, Director of Studies in Theology, Religion and the Philosophy of Religion at Corpus Christi College, on Trinity Sunday, 11 June. In July we will have a sermon from Mr Nicholas Robinson, who is retiring from his post of Headmaster of King s College School and Master over the Choristers this summer after 19 years of service. We have two episcopal visitors this term. The Right Revd Tim Stephens CBE will conduct the annual confirmation service on Whit-Sunday and the Bishop of Lincoln, College Visitor, will celebrate at the Founder s Obit on Friday 19 May. The full sequence of preachers this term is as follows: 30 April The Revd Andrew Hammond Chaplain 7 May Mr Richard Noble KC 1957 14 May The Revd Dr Stephen Cherry Dean 21 May The Revd Dr Mandy Maxwell Rector, St Andrew s Church, Girton 28 May Professor Ian MacFarland Regius Professor of Divinity, University of Cambridge 4 June The Right Revd Tim Stevens CBE formerly Bishop of Leicester 11 June Dr Ruth Jackson Corpus Christi College 18 June The Revd Andrew Hammond Chaplain 2 July Mr Nicholas Robinson Master over the Choristers 9 July The Revd Dr Stephen Cherry Dean [ 2 ]

SPEC IAL SERVI CES We are joined by the Choir of St John s College for the annual joint evensong on Thursday 6 July at 6.00 p.m. There will be a valediction for our leaving choir members at Evensong on Sunday 9 July. The music at the final two evensongs of this academic year is chosen by the leaving choristers and choral scholars respectively. SEATI NG I N CHAPEL The top stalls are reserved for members of King s College and their guests. Members of the University are invited to make themselves known to the Chapel staff and may be invited to sit in the sub-stalls. COLLECTI ON S AT SERVI CES The College receives no money from public or church funds to support the life of the Chapel and Choir and so we ask you to give generously to the retiring collections taken after services and recitals. Envelopes are available for your gift throughout the Chapel, please use them for your donation, completing the Gift Aid details if you are a UK taxpayer. Twenty percent of all donations received in collections will be given to charities as determined by the College s Charitable Donations Committee chaired by the Chaplain. In Lent Term we were able to give 600 to each of the following charities: Lifecraft, Cambridge Student Community Action, Woodcraft Folk, Cambridge and Ely Child Contact Centres, Cambridge Red Balloon Learner Centre, Afrinspire and Jimmy s Night Shelter. The Dean is always pleased to hear from anyone who would like to make a significant or ongoing donation to support some aspect of the Chapel s activity and service. [ 3 ]

MU S I C On Tuesday 25 April we welcome the Choir of the Cathedral of the Madeleine, Salt Lake City, Utah to the Sung Eucharist. The Cathedral was a generous host during the Choir s recent tour in the USA. On the Sunday following, 30 April, instrumentalists will join the Choir for a liturgical performance of Stravinsky s Mass (1948). On Friday 12 May May we welcome parents and families from the King s College School to evensong. The Introit is by former chorister and choral scholar, Edmund Rex (KC 2007). Compositions by three members of College will receive their first performances: undergraduates, Gabriella Morris (Tuesday 13 June), and Stephane Crayton (Saturday 17 June) and fellow, Richard Causton (Sunday 18 June). This last is the fifth in the series of six psalmsettings commissioned in memory of the late Michael Boswell (KC 1959). On Thursday 6 July we welcome the Choir of St John s College for the annual joint evensong. In the Saturday evening organ recital series, the ensemble Prime Brass returns for a programme of music for organ and brass on 13 May, and on 10 June the recital will be given by some of the choristers who are learning the organ. The cover illustration is from an illuminated breviary of c.1398, Poblet, Spain. MONDAY EV EN ING SERVI CES These are sung by King s Voices, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year as the College s mixed voice choir. The service normally follows the familiar pattern of Choral Evensong, with the exception that the second lesson will, this term, be replaced by a reading from the writings of Julian of Norwich. LENGTH OF SERVI CES Choral Evensong or Sung Eucharist on weekdays normally lasts about 45 minutes. Evening services at the weekend last a little longer up to 55 minutes. Sung Eucharist or Requiem on Sunday or on any other occasion when there is a full mass setting and sermon (Sunday) or homily (festivals that fall on weekdays) may last up to an hour and a quarter. Those who are unable to remain in Chapel for the entire service are respectfully asked to sit in the Ante-Chapel.

DAILY SAID SERV IC ES In addition to our choral services, more intimate acts of worship are offered each weekday in one of the side chapels. Normally, the Eucharist is celebrated at 12.30 p.m. If there is a Sung Eucharist in the evening, the 12.30 p.m. service that day will be the Office of Readings, at which we hear and reflect on passages both from the Bible and from the great spiritual writers. RECORDI NG Please note that the use of cameras, recording equipment, video cameras and mobile phones is not permitted in Chapel. Some services and recitals are recorded each week for webcasts. You can listen to these throughout the year on the King s College website. SE RVICE LI S T Copies of this booklet are available for sale at the King s Visitor Centre, please leave this one for others to use. Braille and large print service booklets are available from the Dean s Verger for Evensong and Sung Eucharist services. CHORAL SERV IC ES Services are normally sung by King s College Choir on Sundays and from Tuesdays to Saturdays. Services on Mondays are sung by King s Voices, the College s mixed voice choir. Exceptions are listed. KIN G S COLLEGE CHOI R CDS Choir recordings are available from the King s College website and from the King s College Visitor Centre during the day.
