Peace Lutheran Church FREMONT, INDIANA May Newsletter, 2016 Forty days after Easter we celebrate the Ascension of our Lord to heaven. This event is recorded in Luke 24:50-53. There is a longer ending in Mark 16:19. Because of the Ascension record in Acts 1:6-11, we usually connect the words of Jesus in Matthew 28:16-20 with this event as well. We easily focus on the visual in this event that what was amazing to the disciples and even stranger to us in a scientific age Jesus physical movement into the sky. But behind this gesture of our Lord is the truth that His visual, physical presence has been removed from us so that a spiritual replacement might come to us all the Holy Spirit through which He will be with us always. This gift of His constant presence for His followers was promised by Jesus to His followers in the Scriptures (Matthew 28:19-20; Luke 24:49; Acts 1:4) Ascension appears to be a sad moment, but the disciples returned home rejoicing. Jesus had returned triumphant to His heavenly Father, Who obviously accepted His victorious Son back at His right hand of power, where He now reigns in glory for us. Once upon a time, Ascension was among the most important festivals of the Church, but since it falls during the week, it is usually neglected in most churches. But we will celebrate it on the weekend of Saturday/Sunday, April 30-May 1. As late as the Middle Ages, a procession sometimes to a nearby hill or a pilgrimage to a special place was a regular tradition on this day. The Day of Pentecost the 50th day of Easter which we will celebrate on Saturday/Sunday, May 7-8, closes the Easter season and opens the door to the season of Pentecost also called Ordinary Time in some churches Dozens of weeks that carry us from Pentecost Sunday to the First Sunday in Advent. The Day of Pentecost is the birthday of the Christian Church. On this day the ascended Jesus poured out the Holy Spirit on His disciples, fulfilling His promise to send another Counselor Who would teach them. (John 14:26; John 16:7) With a lively wind like the creative breath of God in Genesis 1, the Spirit energized the disciples, showing them the meaning of the Old Testament and how Jesus life and death fulfilled it. The Spirit baptized them with power to bring this Truth to the people of the world. In the Middle Ages, roses were dropped from the rafters to simulate the tongues of fire. Trumpets were sounded to recall the sound of the mighty rushing wind. Most widespread was the use of a dove or pigeon to represent the Holy Spirit. A live dove was set free inside the church to fly off or a carved one was let down by a rope from the roof. The symbolism is clear. We have been set free from our sin and filled with the power of the Holy Spirit. Let the trumpets sound as we continue to spread the incredible love of Jesus. Pastor Wayne Berkesch

Dear Peace congregation and friends, Did you know that there are three Christian Church holidays in the month of May? We have the opportunity to celebrate Ascension, Pentecost, and Holy Trinity. So, in order to help you in your worship and devotional life, here is a little background information in preparation for these special holidays! WHAT IS Ascension is the holiday that we mark Christ s return to heaven after the resurrection. Officially, Ascension falls on the fortieth day after Easter, which is why some congregations might have a special service on Ascension Thursday. Here at Peace, we will celebrate a few days later, on Sunday, May 8. It is an important holiday! The story of the Ascension is recorded three times in the New Testament, in Mark 16, Luke 24 and Acts 1. We also confess the ascension of Jesus in our common creeds: the Apostles Creed, the Nicene Creed and the Athanasian Creed. Before He returned to sit at the right hand of the Father, Jesus gave the Christian Church a great co-mission: make disciples baptize teach! WHAT IS PENTECOST? Pentecost is the holiday that marks the birth of that Great Commission in the Christian Church through the power of the Holy Spirit. Pentecost means fiftieth day and is celebrated fifty days after Easter. Ten days after Jesus ascent into heaven, the twelve apostles, Jesus' mother and family, and many other of His disciples gathered together in Jerusalem for the Jewish Festival of Weeks. Originally, this festival celebrated the Lord s blessing of the firstfruits of the wheat harvest. Thousands gathered in Jerusalem to give God praise, and God took advantage of the large gathering of people. While the disciples were inside praying, a sound like a rushing wind filled the house and tongues of fire descended and rested over each of their heads. This was the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on mankind promised by God through the prophet Joel (Joel 2:28-29) hundreds of years before. The disciples were empowered to preach and proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The disciples left their hiding, went out into the streets of Jerusalem and began preaching to the crowds gathered in Jerusalem. By a miracle of the Holy Spirit they spoke in the native languages of the people present. Those present represented the farthest reaches of the Roman Empire. Obviously, people took notice. Some thought the disciples were drunk. Others were simply amazed. Peter addressed the crowd and preached to them about Jesus' death and resurrection for the forgiveness of sins. At the end of the day, about three thousand converts were baptized. You can read the Biblical account of Pentecost in Acts 2:1-41. We will celebrate Christian Pentecost on May 15, which will also be the Sunday we receive new members here at Peace! WHAT IS TRINITY SUNDAY? The first Sunday after Pentecost is called Holy Trinity Sunday. On this day, the Church celebrates the Triune God the holy, three-in-one: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The reality of the Triune God is a wonderful mystery: how God is one, and at the same time three distinct persons, is completely beyond the ability of any human (or angel!) to understand. By the power of the Holy Spirit, Christians accept this incomprehensible mystery as a fundamental article of faith. Indeed, how God can be one God in three Persons is a mystery. But it is clearly taught in the Bible (for example, in Matthew 28:18-20 and 2 Corinthians 13:14), and while it can never be understood or rationalized, we do believe and confess it by faith. Since faith comes only through the Holy Spirit working through the means of grace, it is appropriate that this glorious mystery is celebrated on the first Sunday after Pentecost, the great festival of the coming of the Holy Spirit. We will celebrate Trinity Sunday on May 22. I know and realize that schedules (and life in general) sometimes prevent you from worshipping. But I pray that, regardless of where you find yourself during May, you take advantage of the opportunities to worship our God in His congregations, and grow in your faith and love. God s richest blessings to you! Pastor Jeff Teeple

A big THANK YOU to all of you who participated this school year in our Trine University Student Support Ministry. God blessed us with 60 young men and women who accepted our invitation to receive emails and prayer support from Peace members, and through the generosity of The Lutheran Foundation, we were able to gift each of these students with a Walmart Gift Card during Finals Week of 2015. The positive response from both you and the students tells us that this is, indeed, a worthy outreach effort. Our Evangelism Team is looking at ways to extend and enhance this effort for the 2016-17 school year. That means we will need many more Peace servants to come on board. God has opened so many doors for us and He passes the baton to us to continue His ministry. That's the way He works! The school year has come to a close, but do continue praying for the student you connected with this year. And watch the summer Newsletters to learn how we are going to broaden this ministry and provide more opportunity for Peace Lutheran Church to be the Blessing we are called to be. Preschool & Daycare Ministry at Peace Lutheran Church MAY 2016 April was a busy month for school! We kicked off the month with Holy Week activities in all of our classrooms. The picture below is a much loved craft the children created! We enjoyed our Grandparent s Day celebration on the 14th. Together we enjoyed a breakfast, made a craft, and the children sang some songs about their love for their grandparents. We had over 160 grandparents in attendance. Miss Elamie and family welcomed their new baby during April. Little Jack is doing well and is sure to be such a blessed addition to their family! Our busy month concluded with our amazing Rummage Sale. We are always amazed by the generosity of the people of Peace. From donating all your stuff to the helping hands you so willingly provide! We once again had a very successful sale. In May we are looking forward to our field trips! We will be enjoying the Garden Shed, Pokagon and the Buffalo Farm. We are also looking forward to the Spring Program and Graduation. Each of our graduates will receive a Children s Bible thanks to generous funding provided by the Lutheran Foundation. We are now enrolling for the fall; however, we have a unique problem*if all of our current families re-register that means we are full with no openings for new families. We are currently serving 85 children with a waiting list for every classroom. We are so blessed to have a program that is in such high demand. Every day our children hear about the love of Jesus and get to learn and grow in this amazing environment. God has richly blessed our school ministry and we look forward exploring how we can expand this ministry to reach even more children. Thank you for all of your support! Wee Creations wouldn t be the same without you!! In His Service, Sara Miller, Director
