ORDER OF WORSHIP Third Sunday of Easter, April 15, 2018 * Please stand if able CHIMING THE HOUR OF WORSHIP (11:00) WELCOME GATHERING GOD S PEOPLE *HYMN OF PRAISE O Worship the King UMH NO. 73 *CALL TO WORSHIP (written by Rev. Dawn-Marie Singleton) Come, Come and worship this beautiful day. We come ready and willing, for worship is why we have come. Praise God, Hear the Word, and accept your call. We are all called to live our lives as difference makers. Sing of God s love, participate in His story, and have courage to live for Him. We come. Some of us come as students, others of us come as those who work in and out of our homes, some come as retired servants but we come, all of us come together. You come as you are. That is a beautiful thing. Now allow God to equip you for His purpose. We are a little scared, for we do not really understand what that means. But we come and we come ready and willing to be equipped by God for a greater purpose. Let us shout, praise, sing and live our lives as difference makers! O Lord, show us how to be bold and courageous in our call. We begin today, to learn and to grow as we worship the Lord. May we be open to change so that we may transform the world around us. Let us worship together.
PRAYER OF CONFESSION We listen to the stories of the call of the disciples and find them interesting but unrealistic. When we look at our own lives, we believe that we could not leave everything to follow someone we didn t know. We have many responsibilities and ties which keep us from following. But God is persistent. God understands our confusion and doubts. And God continues to call us to be in ministry and mission in this world. It may not mean leaving everything behind, but it does mean being willing to serve wherever God calls us. That s hard. We want to place conditions on service, and usually those conditions are "if we have time", "if we have energy"; " if we can just try serving God for a little while to see how it all works out". Still God calls to each of us. Discipleship is difficult. Forgive us, patient and persistent Lord, for the very many times we turn our backs on serving you and focus on our own comforts. Forgive us when we look the other way when people are in need. Forgive us our angry attitudes and actions which hurt rather than heal. Wrap your arms around us, healing our wounds, binding us to you. Gently move us into service in your name. AMEN. WORDS OF ASSURANCE Do not be afraid. God is with you! That is good news. You do not have to go through life alone, wondering if anyone cares about you or knows your heart. God knows and God loves you. Rejoice for thus it is, has always been, and will continue to be. God s love for you is eternal. AMEN. Bring to us clarity of vision and help us to know that you go with us through this new adventure. Help us to be open to new things, keep us from being afraid to fail, and keep us true to your will Lord. There is so much to be thankful for and so much to look forward to. Hear us as we ask for your will to be done here in Oakton, Virginia. Show
us how to be the disciples you have called us to be. And Lord, no matter what, give us boldness and courage to keep trying new things. May all that we do be for your glory. May we always be a community of faith that knows Jesus as Christ, that is willing to invite others to know him, and may we always be willing to develop devoted disciples and continually serve those in need.
