HYMN AT THE COMMUNION Womb of Life, and Source of Being 14 IN BABILONE UNISON READING OF THE BINKLEY COVENANT Professing our faith in Jesus Christ, we covenant with God and one another to live together as members of this church in obedience to God's will as it has been and shall be made known to us. As part of the body of Christ throughout the world, we promise to express our faithfulness to Christ in love for one another and for the whole of God's creation. The Spirit of God assisting us, we further promise to attend the services of this congregation, observe its sacraments, support its mission to all people, practice faithful stewardship of our possessions and be conscientious caretakers of the Earth, endeavoring always to be a fruitful body of Christians. RESPONDING OFFERTORY When Jesus Wept arr. Arlen Clarke When Jesus wept, the falling tear in mercy flowed beyond all bound. When Jesus groaned, a trembling fear seized all the guilty world around. "Take up your cross," the Saviour said, "If you would my disciple be; take up your cross with willing heart, and humbly follow after me." Take up your cross, then, in his strength, and calmly sin's wild deluge brave; 'twill guide you to a better home, it points to glory o'er the grave. * DOXOLOGY Praise God from whom all blessings flow; OLD HUNDREDTH Praise God, all creatures here below Praise God above, ye heavenly host; Creator, Christ, and Holy Ghost. Amen. * PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING * AN INVITATION TO CHRISTIAN DISCIPLESHIP Heal Me, Hands of Jesus 504 If you wish to become a member of Binkley Baptist Church today, you are invited to come forward during the hymn to be welcomed and received. SOUTHWELL * RECEPTION AND INTRODUCTION OF NEW MEMBERS 341 * BLESSING & BENEDICTION

RESPONSE TO THE BENEDICTION When Jesus Wept arr. Clarke We are fortunate at Binkley to have intentionally chosen from our founding to follow the Liturgical Year. Each liturgical season brings with it specific patterns and practices; rhythms, if you will, that allow us to follow more fully in the way of Jesus with head and heart and body. During the season of Lent things change drastically. The singing or saying of "alleluia" is silenced, the paraments (the hangings on the pulpit, lectern, and communion table) change to purple or to unbleached linen, and music takes on a more somber and penitential nature. In some Christian traditions instrumental music, especially organ music, is completely "given up" for Lent. This year at Binkley we will "give up" a portion of the organ music that we normally hear each Sunday by omitting the postlude. The organ postlude will return on Easter Day. Guests, welcome! We are so glad you have chosen to worship with us today. Please leave us your information in the Friendship Register so we can get to know you better. We are grateful for the musical gifts offered today by The Chancel Choir. The flowers on the communion table are given by Zoe Redick in thanksgiving for her birthday on April 9. Hearing assistance devices and children s worship bags are available in the Narthex before service begins. Music reprinted by permission under OneLicense.net A-701712. Thank you for serving in the Nursery Heather McCuiston, Hser Ku, and Hannah Wall. * The Congregation standing as each is able. THE INVITATION TO CHRIST S TABLE Holy Communion is a sacred and central part of Christian worship. It is a holy act, in which we, individually and corporately, commune with the Loving God. We welcome all who desire a deepened relationship with Christ to the Communion table. From time to time, questions arise concerning the participation of young children in this congregation s service of Holy Communion. The Diaconate recognizes that two historic Baptist principles inform this decision. Baptists are set apart from many other Christian traditions by our practice of Believer s Baptism, which signifies full membership in the church. Traditionally, many Baptist churches encourage persons to receive the Communion bread and cup for the first time after they have been baptized. At the same time, our historic insistence on Soul Liberty reminds us that Baptists value and respect each believer s unique and personal relationship with God. The Diaconate thus recommends that all members of Binkley continue to deepen their understanding of the meaning of Holy Communion, and that families enter into a time of discernment concerning when their children are able to appreciate the sacred nature of Communion. We affirm the responsibility of all believers to determine whether and when they and their children will partake of the Communion elements as we all participate in the service of Communion. THE DISCRETIONARY FUND Today you are invited to make a special offering to the Pastor Discretionary Fund. This fund allows Binkley to support our church and community members who are in financial crisis. Earmark any checks Discretionary Fund in the item section. Envelopes are available in the chair racks.

THE MEMBERS OF THE FINE ARTS COMMITTEE hope that you will make the time during Lent to learn more about Mary Magdalene. Her life is shown in the beautiful art work displayed in the Sanctuary. Most of the work was done from the 1st to the 21st Century by well-known artists from the Renaissance period. Look at the small pictures next to each piece to see the artist, when it was painted and where it is today. It is especially interesting to try to find the subject in the small picture in the larger picture. Mary Magdalene has excited the imagination of people through the ages more than almost any other New Testament character. First, her name refers to her hometown, Magdala, a port on the Sea of Galilee. Just as we say Jesus, the Nazarene, because he was raised in Nazareth, we say Mary, the Magdalene, because she came from that town. In the four gospels the Magdalene is referred to often and is almost always the first woman mentioned. She is prominent at the time of the crucifixion, being with Jesus mother at the foot of the cross, witnessing his burial, and discovering his resurrection. At the resurrection Jesus tells her to go tell the other disciples that he has risen, which she does, hence earning the title apostle to the apostles. MOWERS NEEDED: The weather is warmer, the showers have come, and the grass is growing. Binkley needs more volunteer mowers (male and female!). It's not a difficult job and we have a new mower that is easy to learn to use. Free lessons! So give Janet O'Neal a call or send her an email (joneal23@nc.rr.com) to let her know you can help out. With other volunteers, you probably will be asked to mow about once every 6 weeks. More volunteers= less mowing dates, so invite all your friends to sign up.

THE APRIL 23, 2017 CROP HUNGER WALK CHECKLIST: Check your monthly water bill. Donate or help raise the equivalent to the Church World Service (CWS) Crop Hunger Walk. ALLIANCE OF BAPTISTS 30TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION AND ANNUAL GATHERING, Apr. 27-30: Over four days in April, the Alliance of Baptists will convene in Raleigh to discuss why we have hope in what Baptists can offer the world and to celebrate the good work of the Alliance in the world, while embracing, ever more deeply, the challenging work of justice and love ahead of us. Rev. William Barber is among many exciting and inspiring speakers on the schedule. See flyer in the narthex for more information. If you can help with supplying homemade cookies for the event, please sign up outside Stephanie Ford s door. YOU'RE INVITED: ENJOY A SEASON OF FRESH FRUITS AND VEGETABLES THROUGH THE HARVESTSHARE PROGRAM! What is it? An abundant box of fresh, sustainably-grown fruits and vegetables from Anathoth Community Garden & Farm, grown in Cedar Grove, distributed on a sliding scale, and all for a mission to cultivate peace. Where and when can I find the produce boxes? We deliver weekly (Wednesdays 5-8 p.m.) to Binkley. Deliveries begin April 26. How do I join? You can purchase a produce box for the season for your own household, or contribute towards another household that needs the support -- or both! Our vision is for everyone to pitch in what they are able, while sharing as equals in the gift of good food. To sign up, contact Julia Sendor (336-524-7985 or anathothgarden@gmail.com) or visit our website at anathothgarden.org. More details: - Box pick-up sites right here at Binkley, and elsewhere in Chapel Hill, Hillsborough, Efland, Cedar Grove, and Roxboro. - Season length: Warm Season runs April 26 - Sept. October 4 (24 weeks); Cool Season runs Oct.11- Dec. 3 (8 weeks). Sign up for both, or choose one! - More about HarvestShare: Weekly deliveries of produce, all grown at Anathoth Community Garden & Farm in Cedar Grove (northern Orange County). Through the HarvestShare CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program we care for the land, employ local youth, and distribute good food throughout the community - to households of all income levels. Half of the produce we grow is distributed at no cost to HarvestShare participants who connect with us through churches and health and social service organizations. - Anathoth's story: The garden, now grown to a farm, was founded in 2005 to address the effects of rural poverty that were brought to light by a murder of a community member. Our mission is to "cultivate peace" through good food and sustainable agriculture, by bringing together neighbors to form lasting relationships with each other and God, while helping the garden and farm thrive. You're invited to join us in this work for peace.

PALM SUNDAY AND EASTER WORSHIP On Palm Sunday, worship will begin in the St. Francis Courtyard, from where we will process into the Sanctuary together with palms. On Easter Sunday, the Prelude will begin at 10:40 am in the Sanctuary.
