Paul McGinn Assistant Priest: Fr. Agustin Conesa Seminarian: David Hunt Parish Administrator: Maria Connolly Parish Safeguarding Rep: David Belcher Second Sunday of Lent 28th February 2010 Last Saturday and Sunday afternoons our Cathedral was packed with people from nearly every parish in our diocese to welcome almost 800 people who are preparing to receive the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Communion (Eucharist) at the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday (3rd April) in their own parish church. Saturday was our day and twelve prospective members of our community were there along with their sponsors. The purpose of going to the Cathedral was for our Bishop (Archbishop Vincent Nichols) to welcome all those who are preparing for Baptism (catechumens) and Confirmation & Eucharist (candidates, because they have already been baptised) and to declare that they are now chosen (elect) for the Sacraments at Easter. Six of our group will be baptised and the other six will be confirmed and admitted to full communion. They are a wonderful group who have been meeting weekly since last September. Their journey does not end at Easter and for that reason their meetings will resume after our big celebration. They are a reminder to all of us that our journey in faith is as long as our lives are here on earth. They are also an example to us in reminding us that it is by sharing our thoughts, our experiences and our lives that we grow in faith. Living by faith is not easy. Assurances that we are on the right track rarely come our way. But it is when we share our lives through prayer and reflection that we become more aware of the spiritual nature of our lives and our destiny (Heaven and the glory of God) This is what happened to the disciples who were with Jesus when he was transfigured on the mountain (today s Gospel). One of the purposes of today s readings is to remind us that we are made for heaven. There may be many things in our present lives that we find rich and rewarding but we need prompting again and again that our destiny and fulfilment is God. Lent is a great opportunity for us to realign and refocus our lives on that truth. How is Lent going for you? Don t be disheartened if you haven t got very far with any resolutions and/or plans! There s always a chance every day to start again. I was very heartened during the week by some words I heard on Thought for the Day from an English spiritual writer and mystic God looks at not in what I am or in what I have been, but in what I want to be As well as looking at your own deepest desires in this coming week, remember those who are preparing to receive the graces of God in the Sacraments at Easter so that we may all grow in faith, hope and love. Fr. Paul

A COMBONI MISSIONARY SISTER will make the annual Mission Appeal at all Masses this weekend (27th/28th February.) Sr. Natalia Gomes will speak at all Masses (including the Portuguese Mass) and a collection will be taken up after each Mass to support the work her order does in mission countries. Please give her your generous support. SICK & HOUSEBOUND PARISHION- ERS: We are concerned that very few sick and housebound people are receiving Holy Communion at home, and we believe there must be many more who would welcome it, if only we knew who they are. If anyone is aware of someone in this situation could you please let Frs. Paul or Agustin or me know (having first consulted the person concerned, of course), and I can arrange for a visit by a Eucharistic minister. Ruth Wood, Eucharistic Ministers Co-ordinator. FAITH MATTERS: Lent Series - 2nd March Westminster Cathedral Hall at 7.00pm. The Priest & the Universal Baptismal Call by Dr. Clare Watkins. Those wishing to attend are asked to register by e-mailing:faith matters@rcdow.org.uk or phoning 020 7931 6078. Suggested donation 3.00. ST. Paul has asked Mrs Kathleen Ellis to chair the Committee which next meets on Monday 8th March at 7.30pm in the Bowden Room. The present committee will continue to meet bi-monthly until the summer when it will decide either to continue in its present form or some modification of that form or to adopt a constitution. Examples of such will be examined over the next few months. MISSION TRIP TO THE PHILLIPINES organised by the Verbum Dei Community from 23rd June to 14th July 2010. An opportunity to do some voluntary work, share with local families, reflect, and also some sightseeing. STATIONS OF THE CROSS: from next Friday different groups in the parish will lead the Stations 5th March: CAFOD group; 12th March Youth Groups; 19th March Confirmation Group; 26th March : Choir. Everyone is welcome and we hope that each presentation will be well supported. Here are some suggestions to help you observe Lent 2010.!1) Try and come to Mass on one weekday - in addition to the usual times there will be an early morning Mass on Fridays at 7.00am followed by a light breakfast. And don t forget the evening Mass on Thursdays (6.30pm ) and Mass on Saturday mornings at 10.00am. 2) If you already come to Mass on weekdays, why not join in the Morning Prayer of the Church at 9.00am in the Bowden Room. Books are provided. After Morning Prayer there will be a little reflection about the Mass to help you prepare for it. 3) Stations of the Cross will be celebrated each Friday at 7.30pm and will be led by different groups from the parish. (Parents Lent is a good time to introduce your children to the stations. They don t have to do 14! Just take them to two or three!) 4) There are a number of booklets for Lent on sale on the Paper Table. They only cost 1 each. Walk with Me a Lenten journey of Prayer; Living as One daily meditations and group reflections of the nature of the Church; My Day by Day which gives the readings at Mass for every day in Lent. The dates for this year s pilgrimage are from Sunday 26th July to Saturday 31st July. It would be great if we had a group from St. Thomas. Cost is obviously an important factor and the most economical (and green ) way to go is by train. This involves travelling by Eurostar from St. Pancras to Paris and from there by another train to Lourdes. We would spend six nights in Lourdes and follow the diocesan programme which will include Mass at the Grotto, Stations of the Cross, International Mass, Marian Torchlight Procession, Sacrament of Reconciliation and Blessed Sacrament Procession. There are a number of hotels available (at different prices). I am going to suggest we book places at the Hotel Beau Site which is an excellent three star hotel a few minutes stroll from the domain and overlooking the River Gave. (There are also facilities at the Acceuil St Frai for sick pilgrims who will travel by air from Stansted.) The cost for six days by train and staying at Beau Site is 570 per person. If you wish to travel by plane the cost is 705. Please contact Fr. Paul for further information and/or booking forms. The earlier we book (deposit is 75 + insurance 26 is required) the more sure we will be of getting our desired hotel and travelling places. Would all who want to come please speak to Fr. Paul as soon as possible. Archbishop s Mass of Thanksgiving for the Sacrament of Matrimony, Westminster Cathedral, Saturday 22nd May 2010 at 3.00pm. Archbishop Vincent will be inviting to this Mass all couples in the diocese who are celebrating their 10th,25th,50th and 60th+ wedding anniversary of Catholic marriage in 2010. If you qualify, please give your clergy the following details: husband and wife s names, wedding date, full postal address and email (or phone number, if no email). by 28th February if possible. You will be sent an invitation.
