M ISSION ARLINGTON MISSION METROPLEX LESSON 43 Old Testament Rehoboam II Chronicles 10-12 12 Memory Verse: God opposes everyone who is proud, but he is kind to everyone who is humble. (James 4:6 CEV) Goals 1. Understand that Israel wanted relief from their work. 2. Recognize that Rehoboam asked for counsel from the elders and from his friends. 3. Learn that Rehoboam rejected the wise counsel of the elders. 4. Understand God was merciful when Rehoboam humbled himself. Last week we learned that Josiah was young when he became king. He was a good king. When the Book of the Law was found, Josiah realized that the people had sinned against God and repented. Read the Bible READ: II Chronicles 10:1 :1-18 18 (Hold your Bible open throughout the story.) Begin With Prayer After king Solomon died, the people made Rehoboam king. (II Chronicles 9:30; II Chronicles 10:1) Once he was king, many of the people of the country came to him with a request. Solomon had made them work very, very hard. They were tired and wanted relief. They asked Rehoboam for a lighter load. (II Chronicles 10:1-3) Rehoboam asked them to come back in three days. During that time, he asked for advice (help to know what to do) from the elders. They were very smart and wise people. They told him to be kind to the people and honor their request. They explained that they would follow him and live in peace. (II Chronicles 10:4-7) Then, Rehoboam asked some of his good friends that he grew up with. They told him to make their work harder! (II Chronicles 10:8-11) After three days the people returned. King Rehoboam told the people his answer. He told them that they would work harder than they ever had. (II Chronicles 10:12-14) When the people heard this, they rebelled against King Rehoboam. They began fighting. Rehoboam jumped in a chariot and fled to the capital city, Jerusalem. There his men fought to keep him king. (II Chronicles 10:15-18) One of God s messengers told Rehoboam to stop fighting and go home. Rehoboam listened and followed God s instructions. God was pleased that Rehoboam obeyed. (II Chronicles 11:1-4) However after Rehoboam was a strong king again, he stopped following God. He did things his way and even worshipped idols. (II Chronicles 12:1) Mission Arlington Mission Metroplex Curriculum Lesson 43 Page 2

Rehoboam Bible Facts 1. Rehoboam was the son of Solomon. 2. Rehoboam asked the men of Israel to wait three days. 3. Rehoboam told the men that he would make them work harder. 4. God allowed the enemies of Israel to take their treasures. God sent another message to Rehoboam to let him know that God had abandoned them and let another group overtake them. (II Chronicles 12:2-5) When they heard this news, they were very sorry and asked God to forgive their mistakes. The king humbled himself before God. God did forgive them but He also told them that they would see the difference between serving God and serving others. (II Chronicles 12:6-7) God opposes everyone who is proud, but he is kind to everyone who is humble. (James 4:6 CEV) The other group attacked the city and took all the beautiful treasures in God s temple church and the palace. There were beautiful gold shields and gold objects that were taken away. When Rehoboam saw what had happened, he had them remade out of bronze. Bronze is not as expensive as gold. (II Chronicles 12:8-12) Rehoboam was king for seventeen years. (II Chronicles 12:13) Review 1. Who was Rehoboam? (Rehoboam was the son of Solomon.) 2. What did Rehoboam ask the men of Israel? (Rehoboam asked the men of Israel to wait three days for his response to their request.) 3. What Rehoboam tell the men of Israel? (Rehoboam told the men of Israel that he would make them work harder.) 4. What did God do? (Because Israel abandoned God, God allowed their enemies to take their treasures.) Do You Know Jesus? God sent His only Son, Jesus, to make a way for all people to come to Heaven. Jesus died on a cross for all the wrong sins that we have done. If we believe in Jesus and ask Him to come into our life and forgive all our wrongs, Jesus will come into our life and forgive us. He will help us live for God and do things God s way. He will also take us to Heaven to be with God one day. Prayer Time 1. Take a moment to listen to God. 2. Thank God for sending Jesus. 3. Ask God to help you to be humble before Him. 4. Pray for friends and family members who need to be humble before God. Application When Rehoboam became king, Israel wanted relief from their work so they went to him. Rehoboam asked for counsel from the elders and from his friends. He rejected the wise counsel of the elders. When the people learned he planned to make them work harder, they rebelled. Later, when Rehoboam faced an enemy, he humbled himself before God. God was merciful. God wants us to humble ourselves before Him, as well. Preschool Lesson Read the Bible READ: II Chronicles 10:1-18 18 (Hold your Bible open throughout the story.) Teachers: Make medals that say, Make Good Choices. Allow the children to decorate them. Do you get to spend time with your grandmother or grandfather? Sometimes we have family members that live close to us and sometimes our family lives far away. Remember King David in the Bible. He was the man who killed the mean giant Goliath. David loved God very much. David s son was named Solomon. Do you remember Solomon? He was the king who asked God to help him make good decisions about things. God helped him do what was right for the kingdom. Solomon s son was named Rehoboam. King David was Rehoboam s grandfather. When Rehoboam became king, many of the people of the kingdom asked him a question. They wanted to know if he would make them work hard like his father Solomon. He asked them to come back in three days while he thought about what to do. During that time, Rehoboam asked very smart people what he should do. These people helped his father make good decisions. They told Rehoboam to let the people have a rest and not work as hard. Then, Rehoboam asked his friends what he should do. They told him to make the people work HARDER! After three days, the people returned. What did Rehoboam tell them? He told them that they would work harder! The people were sad to hear this news. They begin to fight Rehoboam s men. Rehoboam caused much fighting in his kingdom because of his bad decision. Do you know what he forgot to do? He forgot to ask God for help. He did not pray and ask God to help him make the right choice. God wants us to ask Him for help. God promises to help us make right choices and He will promise to stay with us. Prayer Time 1. Take a moment to listen to God. 2. Thank God for sending Jesus. 3. Ask God to help you to be humble before Him. Memory verse for younger children [God] is kind to everyone who is humble. James 4:6 Mission Arlington Mission Metroplex Curriculum Lesson 43 Page 4

Learning Activities Memory verse activity Create medals using construction paper and yarn. Write the memory verse on one side. Decorate the other side with the word Make Good Choices. Remind the children that the choices we make have consequences. Encourage them to make good choices. Test your memory Create a poster that compares the good and bad choices that Rehoboam made. Be sure to include the consequences. Taste activity Bring cupcakes and gold sprinkles. Decorate the cakes like treasure. Think about it Rehoboam s choice brought about the division of the kingdom. Talk about his legacy. Talk about the importance of making good choices. Rehoboam s friends gave him bad advice. Talk about the importance of resisting peer pressure. Rehoboam rejected the wise counsel of the elders. Talk about the importance of seeking godly counsel. Touch activity The treasures were taken by Israel's enemies. Decorate and color pictures of treasures using sequins, glitter, etc. Rehoboam s poor choice divided the kingdom. Benjamin and Judah formed one part and the other ten tribes continued at Israel. Use a map and show how the kingdom was divided. The elders gave Rehoboam good advice. Ask each child to give good advice to another. You may want to use scripture cards to help them. (Example: Be kind, be gentle, forgive one another, etc. Run and play Rehoboam went to ask his friend for advice. Assign a color to each child. You may have several in a group with the same color. Have one child go to several other children and ask them what color he should pick to be his partners. Once the partners have been selected ask the children to hop together arm in arm. Take turns so everyone gets an opportunity. Listen As the children take time for silence, remind them that God wants us to humble ourselves before Him. Sing Sing Humble Thyself in the Sight of the Lord, or another song related to the story. Reach out During class, pray (by name) for kids that did not come today. Ask the children to go with you to deliver the handouts to those who were absent. Take the medals with the memory verse for each child. Pray with the children who were absent. Encourage them to read the story in the Bible. Mission Arlington Mission Metroplex Curriculum Lesson 43 Page 5
