CHURCH OF CHRIST, BROOKFIELD, IL Disqualified Godly Inheritance Barry G. Johnson, Sr. 3/1/2015

Sermon Series Thesis: The Inheritance of God should drive the Christian to live building a legacy that imitates our creator. Sermon Thesis: Know what the Lord s Will is so we are not Disqualified for His Inheritance. Objectives: I. Immorality Disqualifies for the Inheritance of God. II. Impurity Disqualifies for the Inheritance of God. III. Greed Disqualifies for the Inheritance of God. Introduction: It is possible to be disqualified from the inheritance of God. 1 Corinthians 6:9 11 (NIV) 9 Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men 10 nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. We all have tendencies; temptations and trappings that are sinful. Men do not have to be defined by their desires which are not Godly. There is living which can disqualify you from the Kingdom and Inheritance of God. From Ephesians 5:5 we will take a look at just 3 things that can disqualify us from a Godly Inheritance. Page 1 of 7

Sermon Outline: I. Immorality Disqualifies for the Inheritance of God. Matthew 15:19 (NIV) A. Immorality is mentioned 30 times in the NIV New Testament. B. Jesus says that morality is an issue of the heart. 19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. Jude 4 (NIV) C. There are those in the world today who attempt to redefine what it is to be immoral so that you would be ok doing anything. If you accept it you will be disqualified for a Godly Inheritance. 4 For certain individuals whose condemnation was written about long ago have secretly slipped in among you. They are ungodly people, who pervert the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord. D. When the Bible mentions Immorality it is mostly connected with sexually immorality. E. Out of the 30 occurrences in the New Testament of the NIV, 25 times the word sexual is right in front of it. Let s just consider the Spirit s Epistle to the Corinthians about sexual immorality. 1 Corinthians 6:12 20 (NIV) 12 I have the right to do anything, you say but not everything is beneficial. I have the right to do anything but I will not be mastered by anything. 13 You say, Food for the stomach and the stomach for food, and God will destroy them both. The body, however, is not meant for sexual immorality but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. 14 By his power God raised the Lord from the dead, and he will raise us also. 15 Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ himself? Shall I then take the members of Christ and unite them with a prostitute? Never! 16 Do you not know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body? Page 2 of 7

For it is said, The two will become one flesh. 17 But whoever is united with the Lord is one with him in spirit. 18 Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body. 19 Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies. F. To be sure this world has always blurred the lines between what is acceptable and what is not. G. So our goal should not be worldly acceptance but a pure approach to a standard of living that is Biblically inspired. A Godly Inheritance should drive the Christian to live imitating our creator. Know what the Lord s Will is so we are not disqualified for His Inheritance. II. Impurity Disqualifies for the Inheritance of God. Acts 10:15 (NIV) clean. A. As Peter learned by default we are all impure. It is God who makes one Pure and Clean. 15 The voice spoke to him a second time, Do not call anything impure that God has made Acts 10:28 (NIV) 28 He said to them: You are well aware that it is against our law for a Jew to associate with or visit a Gentile. But God has shown me that I should not call anyone impure or unclean. B. It is God who has called us to be made clean and pure by obedience to His Word. 1 Thessalonians 4:7 (NIV) 7 For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life. C. Shameful and deceitful living will disqualify you for a Godly Inheritance. Page 3 of 7

Revelation 21:27 (NIV) D. We can argue all day long about what is deceitful and shameful. Everyone can have their own opinion about it. E. You must find out what God says and live according to His commands. Where He is concerned your opinion will not save you. 27 Nothing impure will ever enter it, nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb s book of life. The Inheritance of God should drive the Christian to live decently, building a legacy which imitates our creator. We ought to know what the Lord s commands are so we are not disqualified for His Inheritance. Page 4 of 7

III. Greed Disqualifies for the Inheritance of God. A. In the NIV New Testament we see the word Greed or Greedy 15 times. B. It is a characteristic which is the opposite of what God is trying to create in us, selfless and humility. C. Sadly we can look fine on the outside but full of greed on the inside. Matthew 23:25 (NIV) 25 Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. Luke 12:15 (NIV) D. Greed creates an artificial safety connected to the world. 15 Then he said to them, Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions. Colossians 3:5 (NIV) E. When our safety is connected to the world, we are creating idols for ourselves. 5 Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. F. In our earthly nature a worldly inheritance is fleeting and brings spiritually poverty. An earthly inheritance cannot compare to a Godly inheritance. Therefore we should know what the Lord s Will is so we are not disqualified for His Eternal Inheritance. Page 5 of 7

Conclusion: We did not exhaust everything that disqualifies us from a Godly Inheritance. Let it be understood that we should sow to the Spirit and not to the flesh to avoid being disqualified. Galatians 6:7 9 (NIV) 7 Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. 8 Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. 9 Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Immorality; Impurity and Greed are sowing to the flesh and speak to those who do not follow God. What will you do to be sure that you are not disqualified from the Godly Inheritance He desires for us? Page 6 of 7

Invitation: Romans 10:17 (NIV) 17 Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ. Hebrews 11:6 (NIV) 6 And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him. Luke 13:3 (NIV) 3 I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish. Romans 10:9 10 (NIV) 9 If you declare with your mouth, Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. Acts 2:38 (NIV) 38 Peter replied, Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Revelation 2:10 (NIV) 10 Do not be afraid of what you are about to suffer. I tell you, the devil will put some of you in prison to test you, and you will suffer persecution for ten days. Be faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you life as your victor s crown. Page 7 of 7
