The Fruit of the Spirit: self-control Randy Broberg, October 2008
Galatians 5:22-23 Fruit of the Spirit 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such there is no law.
Matthew 23:25-26 Self Control: What is the Opposite? 23:25 Woe to you, experts in the law and you Pharisees, hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and the dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. 23:26 Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup, so that the outside may become clean too!
SELF CONTROL: HOW IMPORTANT?
Acts 24:26 Self Control, part of the Gospel? 24:24 Some days later, when Felix arrived with his wife Drusilla, who was Jewish, he sent for Paul and heard him speak about faith in Christ Jesus. 24:25 While Paul was discussing righteousness, self-control, and the coming judgment, Felix became frightened and said, Go away for now, and when I have an opportunity, I will send for you.
2 Timothy Self Control an Elder Requirement 3:2 The overseer then must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, an able teacher, 3:3 not a drunkard, not violent, but gentle, not contentious, free from the love of money.
1 Corinthians 7:5 Lack Self Control? You re a Target 7:5 Do not deprive each other, except by mutual agreement for a specified time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer. Then resume your relationship, so that Satan may not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.
Romans 13:13-14 Sins that lack self control 13:13 Let us live decently as in the daytime, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and sensuality, not in discord and jealousy. 13:14 Instead, put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh to arouse its desires.
1 Corinthians 6:9-11 Sins that lack self control 6:9 Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived! The sexually immoral, idolaters, adulterers, passive homosexual partners, practicing homosexuals, 6:10 thieves, the greedy, drunkards, the verbally abusive, and swindlers will not inherit the kingdom of God. 6:11 Some of you once lived this way. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
Galatians 5:16-21. 5:16 But I say, live by the Spirit and you will not carry out the desires of the flesh. 5:17 For the flesh has desires that are opposed to the Spirit, and the Spirit has desires that are opposed to the flesh, for these are in opposition to each other, so that you cannot do what you want. 5:18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. 5:19 Now the works of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity, depravity, 5:20 idolatry, sorcery, hostilities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish rivalries, dissensions, factions, 5:21 envying, murder, drunkenness, carousing, and similar things. I am warning you, as I had warned you before: Those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God!
Colossians 3:5-10 3:5 So put to death whatever in your nature belongs to the earth: sexual immorality, impurity, shameful passion, evil desire, and greed which is idolatry. 3:6 Because of these things the wrath of God is coming on the sons of disobedience. 3:7 You also lived your lives in this way at one time, when you used to live among them. 3:8 But now, put off all such things as anger, rage, malice, slander, abusive language from your mouth.
CONTROL YOUR LUSTS
1 Peter 2:11 Control Your Desires Beloved, I beg you as sojourners and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul,
1 Corinthians 6:18 Flee sexual immorality!
I will set nothing wicked before my eyes; I hate the work of those who fall away; It shall not cling to me. Psalm 101:3 Don t Look
1 Corinthians 7:8-9 Avoid Burning with Sinful Desires 7:8 To the unmarried and widows I say that it is best for them to remain as I am. 7:9 But if they do not have self-control, let them get married. For it is better to marry than to burn with sexual desire.
2 Timothy 4:5 Self Control in Hardship 4:5 You, however, be self-controlled in all things, endure hardship, do an evangelist s work, fulfill your ministry.
CONTROL YOUR TONGUE
Matthew 15:18-19 Control Your Tongue 15:17 Don t you understand that whatever goes into the mouth enters the stomach and then passes out into the sewer? 15:18 But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these things defile a person. 15:19 For out of the heart come evil ideas, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. 15:20 These are the things that defile a person; it is not eating with unwashed hands that defiles a person.
James 1:26 Control Your Tongue 26 If anyone among you thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this one's religion is useless.
CONTROL YOUR TEMPER
James 1:19-20 Control Your Temper So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath;
1 Corinthians 9:24-25 Self Control in EVERYTHING! 9:24 Do you not know that all the runners in a stadium compete, but only one receives the prize? So run to win. 9:25 Each competitor must exercise self-control in everything. They do it to receive a perishable crown, but we an imperishable one.
CONTROL YOUR DRINKING
1 Peter 4:7-8 Control Your Drinking 4:3 For the time that has passed was sufficient for you to do what the non- Christians desire. You lived then in debauchery, evil desires, drunkenness, carousing, drinking bouts, and wanton idolatries. 4:4 So they are astonished when you do not rush with them into the same flood of wickedness, and they vilify you. 4:5 They will face a reckoning before Jesus Christ who stands ready to judge the living and the dead. 4:7 For the culmination of all things is near. So be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of prayer.
CONTROL YOUR WARDROBE
1 Timothy 2:9-15 Control Your Warddrobe 2:9 Likewise the women are to dress in suitable apparel, with modesty and self-control. Their adornment must not be with braided hair and gold or pearls or expensive clothing, 2:10 but with good deeds, as is proper for women who profess reverence for God. 2:15 But she will be delivered through childbearing, if she continues in faith and love and holiness with self-control.
NEED HELP? YOU GOT IT
1 Timothy 1:7 Spirit Given Self Control 1:7 For God did not give us a Spirit of fear but of power and love and selfcontrol. 1:8 So do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord or of me, a prisoner for his sake, but by God s power accept your share of suffering for the gospel.!
